Q: Is this a good item for backing up photos?
A: Yes this is very good for storing pictures. BUT if you have a lot of pictures this is okay but if you have little get a lower storage. Also this backups pictures very fast due to USB 3.0 (if your pc supports it)
Q: can i install a software and run it off the passport?
A: Technically, it is possible and very easy to do so, but it has some setbacks. While installing the tax software, simply choose your device location as the destination folder and voila! However, you might run into some potential file registry issues later (or not, depending on the software itself) . This can cause negligible to severe errors. I have dozens of programs I use that way, only one or two of them can't be used using this method. The ideal situation is if your tax software offers a portable installation. If it doesn't, there is 80% chance it might work. P.s. You can always install it on your computer and simply copy the folder to your new hard drive.
