This is a drive with a platter, motor, and heads. A solid state drive has no moving parts. A solid state drive can be moved while in use, this should not be moved when in use, and not handled roughly. With regard to data, makes no difference if solid state or platter for storage.

I have a SSD in my Mac Book Pro and this portable hard drive works very well with it. They are coming out with more SSD external portable hard drives but they are still quite expensive.(Like $79.99 for a 500 GB drive and that's on sale.) Right now save the extra money and just pick up one like this. You don't need a SSD just to back up your files, pictures and updates. Wait until the prices come down as more brands hit the market if you really want a SSD external back up drive. Good Luck!!!
