The short answer is yes you can. I do this with 95% of my video clips to keep my desktop drive free with space. Is just depends on where your current video files are saved. Could be all inside the iMovie database in you finder >> movies folder or could be on your desktop. Either way you can reconnect the video files if you move them to the external drive.
