If you configure it to do this automatically it does it, however I prefer doing this manually since that way I'm pretty sure which files are the ones I want to back up and which ones not.

If you mean will it automatically back up your computer if you just plug it in, then no. You need to use the backup software that comes with it or some other backup program.

You have to manually transfer the data.
You could have your computer to automatically back up data by setting this up. BUT you cannot access the files backed up.
I do both, automatically have the computer back up the files, and I backup critical directories.
