“Can this be used to record from tv or cable box?”

• You can connect it to your settop box, if the box is provisioned that way, but it wont keep a backup that can be used with other devices, only with the exact set top box it was downloaded from

• I don't believe so, there would be no way to control the HD from the cable box.

• It's not a recording device. It's a storage device. You'd need a laptop or handheld device to be able to download/upload to it.

• In and of itself, the drive will not do this. It's simply storage. You'd need to have the drive connected to a recording device and have the drive set as the storage location for this to work. For example, I don't think I have the ability to connect external storage to my DirecTV DVR so what you're asking for would be impossible with my set up.
