Technically, yes it can be supported. The real answer is a little trickier--This is the version I have and the firmware it uses: NAS 3.5" SATA HDD Western Digital Red Plus WD40EFZX - 68AWUN0 81.00B81 4TB However, there is the possibility that the WD firmware for new drives may be updated at some point. Here's where Synology lists their drive support: https://www.synology.com/en-us/compatibility?search_by=products&model=DS220%2B&category=hdds_no_ssd_trim&filter_brand=Western%20Digital&p=1&change_log_p=1
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes, but see review for Red Plus 4 TB which i bought for Synology NAS. One drive failed almost immediately, and nearly 2 months later, WD still has not sent me a replacement. Their customer service says "They are not shipping any drives until further notice", although they seem to have plenty for sale. CS won't say if this some newly discovered fault, or perhaps a supply chain issue, but you could end up like me with an empty slot in the NAS. The second drive is working fine, and both formatted for the Synology easily and quickly. They'd be 5 stars if one didn't prove to be defective, or even if they replaced it quickly. Synology says that to have a RAID work properly, the HDD's have to be same size and same manufacturer, because somehow each brand handles data slightly differently. so I am looking to have to replace the working drives too if i don't accept being short 1. Something to think about although I have no experience with other brands (like Seagate).

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I’ve had two installed in a Qnap TS-251D for two weeks without issue. My NAS had no issues formatting the drive.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Hi, Please be informed that packed with power to handle the small- to medium-sized business NAS environments and increased workloads for SOHO customers, WD Red Plus is ideal for archiving and sharing, as well as RAID array rebuilding on systems using ZFS and other file systems. We recommend to check with the host device vendor whether drive will fit and support the device.
