I read that there is some sort of TV stopper attached to the top shelf. I was wondering if that is something that could be removed as I would like to use the entire 20" depth to add a pretty large soundbar. null

Yes the stopper is optional and can be removed

Yes. I installed the stopper while reading the directions. There is a designated place to mount it. In my case it is nowhere close to my TV. I would not have put the stopper on mine had I known it would not be next to my set to help hold in place. You will be OK without it.

Hello! The TV Stopper actually needs to be installed, so you can leave it out if no TV will be placed on the top shelf. We hope this helps and our unit meets your needs!
