It can vent inside and can be made to vent outside.
Out of the box it is setup to vent inside.

The Low Profile unit actually comes set up for recirculation. You simply need to hang the unit using the cleverly designed back bracket as a template for locating the holes to hang it from. Then lag bolt and toggle bolt the back bracket to the rear wall. Venting up or to the rear involves removing panels that block one of the external exhaust ports and installing the provided covers to block the recirc exhaust ports that are along the top front edge.

We just had this model installed last week by our kitchen remodeler. It is set up to use recirculation and is not vented to the outside. Since we are in the middle of our remodel we have not been able to see how well the fan/venting works, but love the look of the low profile.

Does not vent outside. Outflow vent is on the top of the microwave, just slightly behind the door.
