“Is there a way to set it so the fan does not turn on every time we microwave something? I mean the vent fan that sucks the air from under the microwave - does not seem relevant to microwaving. Thank you.”

Sounds like a technical issue. Ours doesn’t do that. You might want to exchange for a new one.
