“Should a filter or screen be on the vent/air intake on the top of the unit? It's wide open where the air is drawn in for the vent but the space would allow smaller things to fall into the unit when removing from cabinet above the mountted microwave.”

yes, a screen is provide that you small in to the bottom of the unit. a damper assembly witha louvre is provided for you to connect on the top or back of the unit if you are venting outside through the roof or wall, respectively.
