Hello Q20180112! This does not need to be mounted over a Range, it can be mounted over a counter top. We would just recommend following the Installation Instructions for proper installation. Thank you for your inquiry on our Whirlpool appliances.

The exhaust fan even has a recirculating option so it doesn't need to vent outside either, it'll just stick out a little from your cabinets and vent out the top edge. You just need some good firm wall to mount it on, and you have to be able to screw it to the bottom of the cabinet.
