    Save yourself the money

    I had this ice maker for just over two years and it's already broken and, according to GE customer service, unrepairable. I only use this the in the summer months, as I don't really drink iced beverages in the winter, so it worked for two summers only, like a total of six months. That's crazy for the $600 price tag. Another thing is, it constantly had black flecks in the ice. I'd clean regularily and would typically used filtered water. Once time I opened the side panel and the water resivour on the top was filled with what looked like mold. This was so hard to access and even harder to clean. I think this is a huge health hazard. I'm so disappointed because I loved this machine at first and it was so nice having the nugget ice. But with the experience I now have, I suggest you save yourself the money and don't get this.

    Great ice maker but…

    This worked great for the first few years. Bought on 12/21 and now as of 7/24 it no longer gets cold. Hoping to get a call back from customer service to fix. Will update after

    I am surprised at all the great reviews I have had this for about 6 months and it started making noises and would not produce I’ve tried reaching out to Best Buy and G E well needless to say $600 in the garbage never again!!!

    Do not buy! Less than 2 years old stopped working and GE will not assist or replace. Cleaning schedule and regimen followed as suggested.

    Don’t waste your money. Have had two, first one sent back to be replaced within warranty limits and the second just died within a year. Expensive mistake to purchase this.

    Not worth the price

    I want to say I have spent more hours trying to troubleshooot the machine than enjoy the device. I only used distilled water. I cleaned it every week and even had it exchanged. I wish it would have lasted longer for the price i paid. Now it’s just a machine sitting in the garage.

    DO NOT BUY!!! We bought this in August 2021. It worked well for about a month. It quit working and we contacted GE. They sent a replacement that took two months to receive. It worked well for about three months, then it stopped working and GE sent a replacement. It worked fine for about a month and then started making a very loud noise and eventually quit working all together. I can't begin to explain how frustrating this piece of junk has been. Now it's not under warranty and GE will not replace or repair. You are better off using ice trays in the freezer. This is a glorified piece of junk.

    Buyer beware of GE opal warranty

    We had an issue with our opal ice maker we paid $300 for them to send us a new refurbished machine. We bought the cleaning solution and upgraded filter for the machine and the 2nd one lasted even less time then the first one. Reached out to Opal again and they informed us the replacement only has a 90 warranty which is about as long as it worked. We now have an expensive paper weight that can not be used. DO NOT BUY there are better brands. We gave opal the opportunity to make this right so buyer beware!

    Squeals

    I am on my second, soon to be third machine in 1.5 years. They work amazing at first then get a little squeal. The squeal turns into a scream that sounds like a small animal being tortured which has now happened each time in the middle of the night.

      When Opal is in need of defrosting, it may start to squeak as ice starts to build up around the mechanisms. The defrost cycle is automatic and may take 10 to 45 minutes. This is normal. More frequent squeaking usually requires white vinegar cleaning to remove internal mineral scale buildup. More information on the Removal of Mineral Deposits can be viewed on page 9 of the Owner’s Manual, which is at the bottom of the Features tab on the Best Buy product page. -- If the Ice Maker is making a continuous grinding noise, this is not normal. If it is doing this, please contact Opal Support at myopalservice.com or call 866-907-6718, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, EST. GE_Appliances

    After 3 years not working - no service

    Do not buy this machine!

    Do not buy this machine. I received this as a gift. After a month it would go in Add water mode when it had plenty of water. Then It started doing it while in cleaning mode. Tech support had me do all these useless things until they finally sent me a refurbished model. Guess what after the first cleaning we are back to Add water mode. Also good luck ever getting the WIFI to work

    Total crap. 1 star is too many. It worked great for a year then defrost all day now. GE said one year warranty. My first one from First Build is still going strong. Just wanted a second one for our other property. GE customer service is a joke

If the unit has been stuck in Defrost Mode for more than 1 hour, unplug the unit for 30 minutes and restart. If the unit continues to go back into Defrost Mode, we recommend that you contact our Opal team at 866-907-6718.     Just don't waste your money

    It was great until it broke after six months. I paid $650 for this and ge was HORRIBLE to get any help. Please save yourself the heartache.

    Loved it when it worked

    We had not 1 but 2 of these. Within a month, each one began making horrible screeching sound. Second one also leaked water. I loved having the ice, but it is too much of an investment to have no faith it will work a year later. Really bummed.

    Product doesn't last - beware

    This product just doesn't last. I've had two replacement models sent to me after the original emitted a screeching sound. Each of the two replacements also broke down. I was dutiful about following the cleaning schedule. The product simply isn't well made.

    Bad product; bad customer service

    Broke right after Warranty expired. Worked great and then wouldn’t keep ice frozen. GE wouldn’t stand by this product 2 months after warranty. Terrible customer service and bad product design.
