It does what it says it does; the hatch that covers the paper drawer is a little flimsy and week though.

Nice little printer. It does everything we needed. The ink does seem to run out really quickly. This is just our home office printer and we don't print more than 50 pages a month but it seems like we have to replace the ink every few months.

    Beware the Instant Ink

I purchased this all in one to replace an older HP OfficeJet all in one since I was updating all of my computer equipment (although purchased in March, due to COVID, it was not installed until mid-July). This printer would be just fine for regular home printing. I do find the paper tray difficult to remove and reinsert, unlike my older model. The biggest issue I had with this unit was that I signed up for the Instant Ink program. Sounded like a good idea at the time that it would monitor ink usage and send replacements automatically. However, after using this unit for a week and a half, it showed I had printed over 700 pages. Granted I am now working remotely from home and printing more than normal, but it definitely wasn't this much. When I called HP to cancel the Instant Ink program, I asked, and was told, that the unit counts not only printed pages, but also scanned pages. And if you double side, that is counted as two pages. So the Instant Ink program definitely was not a money saver for me.

I've used printers from HP, Cannon, Epson, and Kodak over the last two decades at home and worked with Oki and Lexmark at various jobs also during that same time period. So I have a relatively well rounded exposure to both brands and types of printers. HP until a few years ago was my favorite printer band because they always produced decent output for the price. However, once Meg Whitman took over control of the company the quality of their printers suffered and I switched to Kodak. My Kodak printer was great and I'm sad that I can't use it anymore because it's no longer being supported by Apple, and with Kodak no longer in business there's little chance that new drivers that will work with the latest Mac operating system. Three years ago I bought a Cannon and it was a nice printer that produced decent output, but I was forced to give it up because of the stupidly designed paper tray, which stopped working the way it was supposed to, and would no longer feed the paper. As for Epson, they make great printers, but their print drivers for Macs suck. No matter what you do the colors will always come out looking terrible. Orange will always come out as red with green speckles. Even today I still see demo print outs with the same issue, a sold color other than a primary color will come out with green, blue, or white speckles. After twenty years they still can't get it right. I was forced to buy a new printer because I had to replace my aging Mac earlier this year. Epson based on my previous experiences was a no go, Kodak was out of business, and I just had a bad experience with my Cannon. As for Oki and Lexmark, they only make printers for businesses these days and my experience using them at work have been less than satisfactory. So I focused my attention on printers from Brother and HP. Like I said earlier I've used HP printers at home (and at work as well) in the past. I've never used or worked with a Brother printer, but I considered them this time around because when I was searching for a printer to buy I kept seeing all these great reviews for their printers. I eventually narrowed my choices down to four printers, two from Brother, and two from HP. Two printers (one each from HP and Brother) where laser printers, and two printers were inkjet printers. I really wanted to buy a laser printer for a variety of reasons, but ultimately had to go the inkjet route because of space considerations. Once I decided to buy an inkjet printer I went with the HP printer for two basic reasons, (1) I was familiar with them, and (2) the HP printer was cheaper than the Brother by a significant amount. Plus the replacement cartridges for the Brother printer were also significantly more expensive as well. After I bought the HP Officejet printer and took it home, it was relatively easy to physically set up. Downloading the print driver from the web was a bit more confusing than it used be in the past, and the "hard sell" for subscribing to the "Automatic Ink Replacement" program was annoying. Not everyone needs to be buying ink jet cartridges monthly. Eventually I did some test printings and while the quality was good, it was also in a way disappointing. HP used to make printers that produced better than average output. For the price I paid for this printer, the output was a major disappointment. My old Deskjet 960 produced better output in draft mode than this Officejet model does in it's best mode. And that's the difference between an HP printer from the past and the ones they're making today. On the plus side they clearly have made some strides since the Meg Whitman era, but ultimately they still have a ways to go to get back to the days where they were one of the better brands on the market. If I was giving this printer a letter grade I'd rate it a C. Draft mode output is terrible, the only decent quality output occurs in best mode or better, and if you print text and graphics with the text the best you can expect is "average". For what I paid for this printer "average" output is a major disappointment.
