However, without a case or frame to hang on to, the device slips & slides out of my hands. Secondly, when reading a book (e.g. Kindle app) the controls on the sides are so sensitive that I usually lose my place (in the book) and have to begin again to find it.

It is good for your YouTube Netflix ect but as far as gaming experience it's not well suited for kids that are aware of lag input and loading times.
