Helps keep the house clean, with a few gotchas

I've been a Roomba owner for years. I had my eye on upgrading to a model that was self-emptying for a while because we tend to have it vacuum daily while we're away from the house. It certainly gives the house a clean feeling even if we haven't dusted and wiped down surfaces in a while. The main floor of our house has three different surfaces - hardwood, tile, and carpet. That made this model the perfect solution, albeit with a few caveats which I didn't realize before purchase. This Roomba cannot differentiate between different types of non-carpeted floors (such as hardwood and tile). So if the solution you put into it for mopping is intended for hardwood, you'll want to be sure to use the room mapping feature to label those rooms and then set a routine that only mops the hardwood areas. We have a relatively large first floor, and we're only able to get about two mop runs done (either hardwood or tile) before the reservoir runs out of solution. Two other notes -the self-emptying mechanism is very, very loud relative to the Roomba itself vacuuming. Also, if you have thin throw rugs on your tile or hardwood, the Roomba will detect them but might still move them or roll up their corners which can be annoying.

vacuum mop combo to make cleaning easy

The iRobot Roomba J7 vacuum and mop is the new line of Roomba's and it does an amazing job, although not with out a few missing features of other robot vacuums that I would like to see. Out of the box, the assembly is quite easy to handle and not a lot of work is needed to put it together. First get all of the packing material off of it like tape and any foam pieces that may be attached. Then get the base station unwrapped and plugged in. Set the roomba on the base station platform with the charging pads aligned and let the Roomba start charging. It has a pretty low charge when unboxing. It will take several hours for it to charge back up to 100%. In the meantime, you will need to download the iRobot app and you can mostly start setup once the vacuum is fully charged. When starting setup, the Roomba will need to get a layout of the house in order to make a map of the rooms and paths it will use. For a 6 room (Kitchen, Dining, Family, Living, Bathroom, Hall & Entry) Layout it took about an hour and a half for it to map it all out. You will need to get any debris or objects that are not normally in the way out of its path so it can what is supposed to be there or not. Otherwise it will vacuum around that stuff until you make a new map. It takes up quite a bit of battery to make a map so that is why it is important to charge it up all the way first. It makes quite a few passes around in each room to fully map. After the mapping is done, you can look at the map and edit the names or move room dividers. On the Roomba before starting a job, you will want to fill the mop tank. There is one bag of concentrated floor cleaner for tile and other flooring, and one bag of concentrated cleaner just for hardwood floors. You pour in the solution to the top of the tank, then fill up the rest with water. The dirty solution will get stored on the bottom of the tank. It needs to be filled and drained every mop cycle. You can go out and buy a large bottle of the cleaning solution after you use the starter packs. Upon set up you will also need to install the mop pad onto the arm. It slides onto the bracket and is easy to put on and take off. The Roomba comes with a manual, extra vacuum bag, extra brush, and extra mop pad. Once the map is set, you can start running the cleaning cycles and you can choose whether to just vacuum, or vacuum and mop. You are able to choose specific rooms to clean or make it clean the whole floor. Vacuuming power is decent. It seems to pick up good and vacuums well on short carpet. Longer carpet pyle is not going to get as clean, but it does do a good job of getting surface dirt, etc. When selecting the job, you can choose how many passes you want it to make and how much water it uses during the mopping cycle. It does a great job of transitioning between tile/hardwood flooring and carpet. The mopping capability is nice, but it is not the cure all. I think you will still have to hand mop the floor every once in a while, and the roomba just maintains it. The mopping tank is easy to remove and install as well, but I have had it open on me a couple of times during the cleaning, and you just have to push it back shut. Overall the Roomba J7 does a great job and cleaning and mopping. I do find it a bit on the slower side of cleaning though, and it would be nice if it had a live map of where the robot is in the house and the paths it has already cleaned. I would also like it if it could clean the corners and walls first before the open areas. You also need to change out the mop pad every few cleanings and wash it which tends to get a bit tedious. A lot of the changes I would like to see would mostly be software side.

    Spare time for the Essentials

The Roomba IRobot J7+ is a camera-based obstacle-avoiding vacuum with precision navigation. I tested this feature by laying electric cords, socks, toys, and other small objects on the floor. The vacuum navigated around these objects with ease. I used the vacuum's Genius App, which provided me with greater levels of personalization utilizing new automation. According to IRobot, the App has the ability to get smarter over time, thus allowing the robot to deliver a more intuitive cleaning experience so busy people like me have more time to do what's most important. I first used the Roomba J7+ to create a house map while systematically navigating room by room. I created a" keep-out zone" (my small weight training area) that kept the vacuum from vacuuming in that zone. In terms of its most important function, it is the vacuum's cleaning ability. It did a decent job cleaning the carpet and hard floors. The IRobot J7+ is able to vacuum and mop at the same time. If it senses carpet (like an area rug), the vacuum knows to disengage the mop feature and reengage it when its senses hard floors or carpet. The dual brush design, together with the side brush, six sensors, and floor tracker, worked well on the carpets and hard floors. The side brush did a good job keeping the debris from scattering. It picked up debris from fine to large. The dual brush system, however, failed to keep some of the pet hair from spilling outside the vacuum. The IRobot J7+ has a self-emptying bin. The motor in the base sucks the debris out of the vacuum's dust bin and into the included bag inside the emptying bin. The regular maintenance of the IRobot Vacuum J7+ is pretty simple. Some parts require weekly cleaning, and other parts require monthly cleaning and adjustment. The bag inside the emptying bin can hold debris for weeks, depending on your cleaning habits, before it has to be changed. The iRobot J7+ is super quiet. The vacuum shuts down suction when moving to new areas of the house. The vacuum sits low to the ground, which makes it easier to navigate under furniture. The iRobot J7+ app has some great features. I was not able to explore all of the features this vacuum can offer. But this vacuum is for you if you value your time. You will have more spare time to do what is essential and enjoyable.

    Fantastic Combo Unit

I had the opportunity to test the Roomba J7+ combo for the last 2 weeks, and it is impressive. I was eager to try this, because it had the vac + mop capability in a single unit. My main floor is entirely hardwood, and this would be a timesaver if it worked. I previously had the older Roomba J7+ vacuum, and that itself was impressive, but this unit takes it to the next level. Feature wise, the vacuum features are identical to both models. In fact, during setup, since I previously had the J7+, I was able to skip the initial mapping requirement, and could simply import my existing map of the main floor, with clean zones, obstacles to avoid, dividers, etc already taken care of. That was fantastic and a bit unexpected. In terms of looks, the J7+ combo looks almost identical to the vacuum only J7+, with the exception of the retractable mop head. This thing looks like a spoiler on a car when it is lowering. It is quite ingenious the design of it. You can tell the J7+ to vacuum only, or mop and vacuum, and do a single or double pass. The mop does the job and does a really nice job working its way across the floor, mopping the room as it vacuums first. In my testing, it left no streaks. The bin performs two functions... it holds the dirt that is vacuumed up and also holds the cleaner. iRobot provides an initial package of concentrate, but in test, it only lasted two sessions before I needed to refill it. The app told me when the roomba needed more, so that was great. If I didn't fill it, the J7+ Combo would continue just vacuuming. When the dirt bin is filled, the roomba simply returns to the base, empties, and goes out to finish the job. Depending on the size of the job, it might need to return home and recharge. I love the fact that you can choose exactly which rooms you want to clean. That is so convenient and it will detect obstacles and give you the option to tell Roomba that the obstacle is permanent (and avoid it next time) or temporary, and try again later. Overall this unit is absolutely fantastic and great if you have a large space simply due to hits flexibility and hands off nature of cleaning.

    Excellent Vac & Mop

So this new Roomba vacuum is amazing, its a vacuum and a mop all in one and much quieter than my old Roombo vacuum. It worked great on dog hair which the old didn't do such a good job on anymore. The self-emptying feature awesome but it does take a little investment in time to get it properly programmed for all the areas in our home. The dust receptacle sure fills up quickly through and it only does a so so job in corners and right up against carpeted walls. Leaves a bit of dust bunnies wherever the floor transitions from hardwood or tile to carper and back again but a second or third programmed pass takes care of that. A couple of timers it did not go back to its dock but all in all the majority of the time it works great even though we can only state this based off of less than one month's use. We have it set for three days a week for a 1850 square foot home and it does a very satisfactory job but of course once a week we still have to spend a couple of minutes with a manual vacuum touching up here and there just like with any other robotic vacuum. The major problem is that people have unrealistic expectation that when they spend a lot of money on a product it is supposed to be absolutely perfect in all ways.

Considering how much this is worth, I wasn't very impressed at the beginning. Mine came with a defective right wheel, which I had to fix myself because I don't live in the United States (I literally had to disassemble the bottom part and unscrew the wheel, thanks Youtube!). Once fixed, it worked as it should. The vacuum is really good and my floors feel clean, the app is also very easy to use. My only complaint would be that the dust bag apparently filled after just two runs, and according to the product's description each bag is supposed to last at least 2 months before getting full. I'm currently on my second bag and I am hoping this time it lasts the time it should. Besides that, I am very pleased with its overall performance, my floors feel very clean.

    Cleaning "Magic"

I've owned a robotic vacuum cleaner from a different brand for several years, but I almost never use it anymore. It cleaned well enough, and it was novel for a while to have it work all on its own. However, it had completel unsophisticated navigation tech - all it seemed to do was blindly move until it hit something, and then change direction. If I wanted it to ignore certain rooms or hazards, I had to lay down special strips that it would recognize as a "fence." Since it took a while to clean up everyday messages (or fence them off), my wife and I just wound up vacuuming by hand anyway. The Roomba Combo j7+, on the other hand, is so much better, and so much more useful. The j7+ environment navigation capabilities are quite sophisticated. The Roomba built up an accurate floor plan from its first "mapping run" (where it doesn't do any cleaning, but rather just explores and maps its environment), and then it took just a few minutes of work in the iRobot mobile app to mark off the boundaries of each room. Now, we can tell it to clean specific rooms, and off it goes - no need to "fence" off rooms first. It's able to find a path between rooms, and only really bumps into walls and furniture as it tries to get right up to them for cleaning. It will even take pictures of obstacles it detects, so that we can review them later and help it learn how to handle them better in the future. Having a robotic vacuum that can also mop is a welcome feature for us too, since that's another household chore that it helps us with. Robotic vacuums don't seem to have quite the cleaning power of their manual cousins, and that does go for the mopping feature as well. However, they make up for it by being able to clean more frequently, since they don't require as much time from a human to do their work. Being able to both vacuum and mop frequently is a huge help (especially for us, since we have a young child sometimes spilling drops of sticky snacks that we do not notice). The Roomba has been very good at detecting carpets and rugs, and it cleverly stows the mop pad completely on top of the machine so that it can still vacuum these un-moppable areas. The reservoir for the mop cleaning solution is a bit smaller than ideal, as it doesn't seem to hold quite enough to complete a vacuum+mop job for all rooms on our main floor. Obviously, your experience may vary depending on how large your home is, and how much area is carpeted. The Roomba still requires a decently sized area clear of obstructions for its base station. The hardest part of the set-up for me was actually finding a good location for this (it's taller than the base station from my old robotic vacuum cleaner too). On the bright side, one base will cover both robotic vacuuming and mopping functions (separate devices would of course each require their own). The base for the Roomba "plus" models like this features a self-emptying capability for the vacuum cleaner dustbin. Not only is it a convenience to not have to remember to empty this, but it allows the Roomba to perform longer cleaning jobs without human intervention required. The base essentially has its own vacuum built in to suck the debris from the Roomba when it docks. This process is brief, but significantly louder than the Roomba itself. The loudness isn't generally a problem, but it might be a nifty feature for iRobot to add to allow the final emptying (after the cleaning job is done) to be be deferred. (For instance, if there's a young child napping within earshot.) The reservoir for the mop still must be filled by hand, though, so there's no benefit from the base station on that. My wife and I are pretty happy with how much of an improvement the Roomba Combo is over our old (and unused) robotic vacuum. We are pleased that it has both vacuum and mopping functions in a single device. The navigation is impressive, and the ability to easily define room boundaries makes it quite convenient to create cleaning jobs for any or all rooms on our main floor. We think you will also find this to be a great product.

This is a combination robot that will both mop and vacuum at the same time. The vacuum is a standard Roomba design, being short enough to get UNDER furniture (some other brands don’t do that). It has two small rollers in the center that rotate to pick up dirt combined with a weak vacuum. There is a rotating brush on the side that gets dirt from the edge into the center. Nothing much has changed since the earlier incarnations. But mopping is a new feature to me. There is a pad that sits under a curved flap on the top-rear of the unit. When mopping is required, the flap actually lifts up, swings around, and then nestles under the rear of the unit. This is a very slick design. Note that the unit came with two pads, so that you can use one while cleaning out the other pad. The vacuum operation is, as usual, quite good. The mopping performance is okay, but not spectacular. The robot itself is not that heavy, so it cannot “scrub” any dirt or stains away. The mopping should be considered to be closer in performance to a single pass with a “swiffer” in that it will gather any remaining dust or loose dirt. But anything that is dried on the floor that needs scrubbing, this unit will not really help that much. The unit came with a base. This works to charge the Roomba, as well as empty the dust container. So you only need to empty the dust out when the filter bag in the base gets full. The dust container on the robot also holds the cleaning solution for the mopping action, and it does not hold much. Depending on the size of your house, you might have to refill the cleaning solution daily. This kind of detracts from the hand-free nature of the base. It would have been much nicer to have a large storage of cleaning solution in the base, and have the robot itself top off its fluid supply from that. Perhaps in a future version. Previous generations of Roomba robots have not been able to identify pet “waste” and would happily smear it all over the house. This has happened to me. But this new generation features a front-facing camera (with a head light) that is supposed to identify doggie “land mines” and avoid. Them. So far it has actually found some items that diligently steered around them, but fortunately, they were not pet waste (so far). This feature seems to work as advertised, and should, when needed, save a very unpleasant task cleaning out the robot and the floor. Very nice. One other thing that I should mention is that Roomba has made their products easy for the owner to service. Every part on a Roomba that is likely to need constant cleaning is easy to remove, and it is easy to order any moving part that is prone to breakage. The two round rollers on the bottom are particularly fragile, being made of very soft rubber. They do tend to get tangled with anything long, such as ribbon, string, or some cat toys. These items can tear up the rollers, and so a spare set should always be on hand. The side spinning brush is also easily removable to clean out hair wrapped around the shaft, and also easily replaced. Even the drive motors can be replaced. It is VERY nice to have something that can be easily serviced without having to ship it off. Some other brands don’t offer replacement parts, meaning having to deal with a service center any time something breaks.

    Casual Mopping Only

TL;DR Version - The j7+ Combo is a good first attempt from iRobot, but it's not competitive with other Vac/Mop combo devices on the market nor is it a good value for the price. If you're committed to iRobot, wait for gen 2 or the s9 combo. I've been using the j7+ combo for about a week now, and it's a great 1st attempt at a combination device from iRobot, who used to be the leader in robot vacuums, but is falling behind the competition in design and features. It's the same as the "regular" j7 vacuum, with the self-emptying base, but modified to include a built-in mopping "arm" that automatically deploys a mop pad whenever it detects hard floors to mop, but "stows" the mopping pad on top of the j7 when it's on carpet. iRobot's design choice for the mopping "arm" seems clever in concept, but unfortunately, this means that the top of the j7 gets slightly damp and dirty from contact with the dirty mop pad, and the pad itself must be manually changed and washed after each use. Replacement/additional mop pads are not yet available from iRobot, and it also appears that the "drip nozzles" must also be periodically replaced at a cost of $15 each. Also, I noticed the j7's battery life is worse compared to my other robot vacuum and takes twice as long to vacuum (no mopping) the same area in my home (nearly twice as long). The longer cleaning time is likely because the j7 returns to it's base to recharge after only 35-40 minutes of cleaning, whereas my other vacuum can clean the same area in one charge cycle. Although the battery life was worse, the j7 does have better cleaning performance - my carpet "feels" cleaner after the j7 completes a cleaning cycle compared to my other robot vac. For mopping, don't expect the j7 to clean up any significant messes. The mopping performance is like using a Swiffer - not for heavy or sticky messes, more for general/light duty cleaning performance. Also, I'm not a fan of washing & replacing the mop pad after every time - I guess now that self-emptying bins are "common" it seems pretty spoiled to expect the mop pad to be self-cleaning as well (yet this is exactly what some of iRobot's competitors have done). The self-emptying bin is the same as the regular j7, and a slightly newer, more compact design from the s9 and i3 robots. But it's just as loud as the others - don't run this when you or anyone else is trying to sleep - it sounds like an airplane landing. From a value perspective, the j7 Combo is not a particularly good deal within the iRobot family. The j7+ combo costs more than buying the Braava mop & s9 combo pack ($1100 for the j7+ combo vs. $855 for the j7+ and Braava mop combo pack on iRobot.com), and you can get better mopping performance from the Braava. The j7+ combo is a better deal than other vac/mop devices from the competition though. Overall, this is a good first effort from iRobot, but if you're looking for a combination device and want to stay within the iRobot brand, I'd wait for the 2nd generation and for iRobot to release a self-empty and self-cleaning base.

The J7+ combo isn't the best Roomba but it's not bad. I was disappointed that they changed back to a circle chassis instead of the D from the S9. The circle did get around obstacles easier which was probably the driving factor. However it made it so that corners didn't get as clean. The spinning bristles didn't seem to help and they spun so fast they flung things like cereal away from the vacuum. I wish it had higher suction. I think this vacuum is suited for daily cleaning but you'll still need to pull out a bigger vacuum to get a deeper clean. It at least is quiet when it runs. The low profile allows it under furniture pretty good. I like the change in the base. Having it half as high and an area for an extra bag is convenient. The base is very load when it empties the bin though. Having the self empty bin is great. Obstacle avoidance is really good with having a camera in the front. As for the mopping piece of the vacuum I'm pretty disappointed. It works great at not getting the carpet wet by having the pad flip away. Getting a tile floor clean was a hard task for it though. Simple food drips didn't come up. I didn't even notice a difference after the mop ran. I think this is best suited for a wood floor that you just want to run a wet pad over to clean dust. It really needs to have spinning pads to be an effective mop for a kitchen. The vacuum was very good at determining different flooring. The iRobot app has a great interface. You could tell it if you wanted to do a vacuum only run or a mop and vacuum. Also you could set how much water to use running the mop. We have another Roomba that was in this space and it was simple to transfer the map over and save time not having the new vacuum recreate it.

I’m still getting used to the operation of this combo mop and vacuum but so far I like it. It runs out of solution quickly but I do have a good amount of wood floors that it is covering. When it runs out it doesn’t stop and let me refill, it just keeps vacuuming so unless I pay attention to my phone I don’t realize it’s not mopping.

This is my 2nd iRobot that I’ve purchased in the last 5 years. Bought it in November and had issues right away. It would not empty the bin. Called support and sent it in for repair. Siad it would take 7 to 10 days. At the 10 day mark, i emailed for a staus check, no reaponse. I sent numerous emails and i finally received a response saying they didi not have any updates. I called and spent several hours on the phone with no resolution. They ultimately said they are waiting for a new dock but have no idea when they will receive one to send me. I reqoa new unit and they refuse. I requested to speak to a supervisor and they said they eacalated it and a supervisor would contact me, its been a week and nothing. I called again to speak to a supervisor and customer service said that’s impossible and i have to wait for them to email me. Its been over 40 days.
