It's hardware and heat which means the reader will eventually fail. Buy only if you're willing to accept this. Otherwise it's a great gaming handheld. I'm actually surprise BB is still selling these given the official state by Asus.

Great device

This device you either need a extra power supply or to be connect to a power outlet .

Great handheld

Buggy

Mostly it was having to reconfigure the machine for just about every game. Also, the bluetooth wouldn't pair with numerous Xbox controllers. Hope they work it out.

An okay experience

As a disclaimer, I did buy an open box but it had issues out of the gate. I would load games in Xbox Game Pass and it was like the controllers would disconnect. The touchpad would go dead and programs would freeze. I ended up returning it as faulty. I gave it 3 stars because when it did work it was an okay experience. I went with the Legion Go instead.

We do understand your disappointment with the ROG Ally and the inconvenience this may have caused with the SD card reader. This known issue with the card reader has been resolved with a hardware fix. To avoid SD card from being damaged, please ensure Windows, drivers, BIOS and the Armoury Crate utility software are always updated. Updates for the device are posted at: https://rog.asus.com/us/gaming-handhelds/rog-ally/rog-ally-2023/helpdesk_bios/. Additionally, always configure the game, video settings and performance mode in optimal settings, not over threshold, inside the Armoury Crate utility. If these were performed to no avail, we recommend sending the ROG Ally and the damaged SD card for service to have the issue resolved immediately. An RMA number is required to send it in for service. All in One! Great Gaming and Emulation Machine

I could also run AAA games with no issues. It is amazing

Do not buy! Known manufacturer issues!

My SD card reader is completely fried and even after ASUS replaces it the issue can still happen. There is a design flaw because they put the SD card reader next to the vents. As a result, the SD card reader overheats and breaks. Known issue, everyone is complaining on Reddit about it.
