Handheld gaming with a 'twist'
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Selling points were: 512GB, 1080P screen and $400 on sale. I debated going with a 'Deck' vs a 'MS' powered device. ASUS does include a 'launcher' that sort of helps however navigating WIN with a 'Xbox controller' is painful at best. After getting through the MS nonsense I loaded Steam on it and installed 3 games from my library. (all of which are fairly OLD IE: not resource intense) 2 out of 3 play fairly normal/as expected while 1 was not even able to drive 1080P with this device. :( Thankfully it draws low enough power to be fully energized with a USBC charge cord. IDK about battery life, I'd expect/hope a few hours. Smaller+ligher than bringing a full gaming laptop, uses less power so a 'power brick' might keep it going for a while AND since it is screen+controller in one device no need to carry a bunch of extra stuff. Wireless wise it is 5G/2.4G Wifi +Bluetooth, lots of connectivity. The Z1 is one of the weakest CPU/GPU's so don't expect AAA games with better than 'LOW-MID' graphic settings. I'd say this is 'medium', hence the 3 out of 5 stars.

Amazing little device.
||Posted . Owned for 6 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I love this thing. It basically became my entire rig. I just use this with a dock now and havent used my desktop in months. Runs fortnite pretty smooth. My only complaint is 16gb ram is just not enough for the pig win11 has become and it obviously cant be upgraded. When the 32gb z2 models start coming out I think thats gonna be the moment where this is all I really need and I can dump the desktop entirely. As a comparison I also have a lenovo i7 1165g7 laptop as well and this device outperforms it pretty much in every task... so I havent used that laptop in months eaither.

A good entry point for Windows handheld gaming
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. In a world where the Steam Deck OLED exists, the ROG Ally finds it hard to compete. The entry level model in combination with holiday sales and open-box offerings help in this regard and surprisingly the performance is very comparable to the Steam Deck. I would recommend as an entry point to Windows handheld gaming.

ROG Ally
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The ROG Ally is best for serious PC and Xbox gamers who want a premium, powerful handheld device and are willing to pay a premium for the features and performance. However, it may not be the best choice for casual users or those who want a simpler, less expensive handheld experience

Handheld gaming done right!
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased the Z1 unit over the Z1 extreme due to the excellent sale price of $399. I had low expectations of being able to play my favorite AAA games on descent settings. I was absolutely blown away by the performance. I purchased the Legion Go before Christmas, and you would think that it's listed high performance specs would highly outperform this one. No in the least! The Legion Go is an example of great hardware but software that does not work well with it. Games played nowhere near the quality of the ROG basis unit. I can play Destiny 2 on the highest settings and Call of Duty Modern Warefare 3 on normal. The unit fits in your hand well and the Armour Crate works wonderful. You can set the VRAM to auto or set to any amount you like. Auto work fine in everything I've tried. Asus got this one right and proves that you don't need the greatest hardware specs if you have the software that works well to maximum efficiency. In my opinion, only get the Z1 Extreme if you plan to connect to an external monitor at a higher resolution. Otherwise, this little powerhouse should meet your needs. I highly recommend taking advantage of the $200 discount to $399.

Good handheld helped/hampered by Windows
||Posted . Owned for 3 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. There are only two things that stop this from being a 5: Windows and the existence of the Steam Deck. Ah Windows, the double-edged sword. It provides the access to games that Linux/Proton-based SteamOS can't, but Windows just isn't built for controller- and touch-based navigation. ASUS tried to make up for it, which helps a bit. The Ally is better for running Windows, but the experience needs to be improved. The Steam Deck is about as close as you can get to a console-like experience for a PC handheld. It does a dramatically better job in the UI/UX department. The Ally feels good in hand, runs games well, and has a reasonable battery life for the games it can run. This Z1 processor version is underpowered compared to the Z1E version, so as long as you keep your expectations in check this'll be a good buy.
