Owned for 6 months when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Best Purchase I made or so I thought, I owned a OG Ally previous to my X that I absolutely loved but thought new is better but honestly I really didn't notice too much of a difference and my X is constantly giving me issues with the software to the point where right now its stuck on a loop and I cant play it. Will be asking Best Buy how to proceed and if there is anything they can even do.

I’m 30 y/o I need every competitive edge I can get lol…

Worthy Competitor in the portable gaming race
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Asus Rog Ally X which is the newest line up from Asus in the portable gaming market. Some of the hardware specs: 1080p 120hz screen, 500 nits. 24gb ddr5 ram, AMD Ryzen Z1 cpu. Lots of other things I won't go into but its a well built machine. This is based on a windows OS and does in fact run windows under the hood which is a bit more clunky imo over the steam deck. I had to wait over an hour after turning it on for the system to update and become available, feels like this should have been done prior to shipping. Once you are into armory crate, their all in one solution for gaming, setup is fairly easy. Link your favorite game accounts and get off to gaming. All the AAA games I ran were buttery smooth at the 1080 resolution, battery life was rock solid thanks to the 80wh battery. I felt like it stayed relatively cool in my hands. The screen is a touch smaller than the steam deck but the PPI on it is rock solid. It comes with a 1tb ssd so plenty of room for all your media. If you are a power windows user you may welcome the fact that the custom OS is built on top of Windows but it a touch annoying dealing with windows logging in setting up a microsoft password if you don't have a microsoft already. Get ready to be battered by microsoft if you don't btw. It's nice to have some competition in the market but this one fell just a little short for me. I own a steam deck and if you set this down next to it I don't think this would be the one I gravitate towards each time. I would have liked to have seen a more robust screen (OLED anyone?) I also had some trouble interacting with the text boxes in windows but maybe the can be worked out in future updates. I would recommend a bluetooth mouse and keyboard to make your initial setup less clunky and user friendly. They also included two very cheap plastic holders that act as a stand, but they feel weak and not fully fleshed out almost like a freebie they tossed in the box. I would invest in something sturdier for longevity. The customization you can accomplish inside the system is on point tons of customizable macros and hotkeys so you can tailor the system to your needs. It feels a tad overwhelming but if you want the freedom, ASUS has given it to you. If you are looking to jump into portable gaming I don't think you would be overly disappointed here but if you are already hanging onto a steam deck I'd keep hanging on personally.
