Not happy
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought the HT-J5500W today and its just not what I hoped for. The speakers aren't too bad but the rear "wireless" is not worth it. Tried a few movies but they dont work. They test just fine but no sound while watching a movie. Then theres the volume. I'm watching a movie and can't turn the volume up or down. The display just says not available. It only seems to work while I have the FM tuner going.

Not worth the money
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Installed the system and did a sound test and all speakers work fine. Then I went to the radio, TV and regular DVD and only had sound on the front two speakers. Checked and re-checked all wiring and settings. Did a hard re-start and it made no difference. Talked with Samsung tech support 3 times and still could not get them to work. Well it was finally told to me that it will ONLY play surround sound from a DVD that produces a 5.1 surround sound output. In other words I will never get surround sound from the TV, radio or standard DVD. This makes this unit absolutely worthless to me. I have a Panasonic unit that is probably 10 years old and it does exactly what it's supposed to do. Can't play blu-ray but at least I can play the radio in surround sound. Can't return it now so I'm stuck with a $350 entertainment system that only plays on two speakers. See if you can find that in the fine print. Samsung made a junk unit.

Firmware update 1012.5 disables center spkr & sub
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Worked great for about 2 years until a firmware update disabled the center speaker and subwoofer. Since it was more than 1 yr after my purchase, it was not under warranty. I spent an hour with tech support who really do not have any good advice or solutions to fix an issue that was caused by their update from 1011 to 1012.5. All of my speakers worked fine with youtube, dvd, cd, thumbdrive, and phone via bluetooth. I noticed that 5.1 was disabled on Netflix, and tested my sound on all options previously mentioned prior to doing the firmware update via USB since it was not doing it via the online option. I had previously updated to the 1011.0 update with no issues. Unless you have purchased extended warranty on this equipment, you will be stuck with low grade stereo sound after the firmware update. If you enjoy taking equipment in for repairs and or wasting time performing useless fixes with tech support, then this is something you might want to purchase. Otherwise, spend your money on another company's product.

Incompatible with some TVs
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Would not work with my LG HDTV (TV says "invalid format"). Samsung tech support gave me some nonsense about the aspect ratio and frame rate of my TV being incompatible with the HT-J5500W. The TV works fine with everything else I have plugged into it (old JVC system that I was replacing, Apple TV, Verizon DVR, laptop, etc., all using the same HDMI cable) When I returned the Samsung system, the Best Buy customer service rep said Samsung deliberately makes some of their products incompatible with other vendors but that Samsung won't admit to it when you call them. I exchanged it for a Sony BDV-E3100 which works fine with the same TV.

Needs optical cable to work
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Well not play any disk without optical cable. Put in disk and they play for 10 seconds and you can't bypass in options settings unless you are quick (10 seconds quick ) i was disappoint because it took me 3 hours to get pass the bypass in settings because system kept resetting even in the settings without an optical cable hooked up to cable box (my cable box had no optical cable plug )The speaker wires got to be the smallest gauge i have ever seen and is not set up to use your own speaker wire. I am going to return and just buy a receiver and not worry about any optical cable , or supper cheap speaker wires

Not impressed
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My 6 year old Panasonic theater set up went out on me so I was looking to replace it. We have a Samsung TV in anopen concept living room / kitchen. I didn't want a sound bar as the room is too big for that. I was extremely disappointed once this system was hooked up. (Hook up was very easy.) It sounded no better than the speakers in the TV. There was no bass from the sub at all. I checked, double checked and triple checked to make sure it was hooked up correctly and it was. The sound was not good. I returned the unit for a different brand and model and am much happier.

Not a good product
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm a big fan of Samsung products. Until this one. It worked great for about a year and then all at once just started failing all over the place. Speakers started going out. BT works only when it wants to. I am going to have to throw it away and start all over again. Very disappointed in this from Samsung. Don't waste your money. Buy something else.

Irritated
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had for about six months I I am very unhappy with this. I can't get on YouTube or Netflix because the system time is updating. Occasionally when I watch a movie the sound works, except for the dialog. I got this because I have had really good luck with Samsung products before, but this and the tv I bought shortly afterward have continued to let me down. Very frustrating

Dont waste your money
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Horrible. Do not buy this product. I am an EE, one of the speaker wires out of the box was faulty, after replacing it, I still have no center sound. Great if you want to watch DVDs, not if you want to listen to them. Going straight to the recycling, not even going to try to return it.

STAY AWAY. Extremely poor for the price
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The tweeters in this system are just awful. Anything louder than 1/5 of the max volume and the sound begins to get distorted. The sub is alright, doesn't provide too much bass, considering the size. Very poor system for the 400 dollars plus i spent for this system.
