Sometimes you don't need the plan if you are buying quality products but it's great to have if something goes wrong so you don't have to buy a whole new thing.

Definitely get the protection plan on electronic purchases. If it cannot be fixed they will replace

We bought the Best Buy 5-year Warranty for our 55" Sony TV as an insurance policy. Although the warranty document doesn't state this fact, the warranty begins the day you purchase it.... much easier than dealing with Sony.
