The last system I had included a clock with an alarm. This system did not have one, so I had to buy a digital clock to set for AM wake ups.

    Overall, A Good Buy

My goal was to replace my older model Insignia shelf system NS-A2111 (with DVD player) in order to gain more connectivity options. This little unit has terrific sound for its size and price point; even without using any of the EQ settings or tone controls, it has a nice, smooth, rather bassy sound that I really like. The connection options are just what I needed; the USB port recognized my thumb drive right away, and the Bluetooth capability worked fine with my Samsung Galaxy S4. Of course, those playing CDs will find that the CD player works very well, even with scratched discs - I tried one of my more scuffed up CD-Rs, and it played without a hiccup. The FM radio works well, once the included antenna is stretched out and away from the unit; it does lack AM, however. It has an AUX connection for playing sound from a TV or other device with a line-out. There are a few downsides, though. The system exhibits a delay whenever a command is executed, either from the front panel or the remote. The mp3 navigation is lacking, whether playing from an mp3-laden CD or a thumb drive plugged into the USB port; as another reviewer mentioned, the unit seems to lack the capability to see folders - it only sees the total number of individual mp3s. It's possible to skip forward to a given track number, but it will be difficult to hit the folder and track you might be aiming for, and you'll probably have to keep skipping forward and backward to find the song you're seeking. Overall, however, for the price (especially since I caught it on sale), I think this is a nice little shelf system. The built quality is pretty good, and the sound quality is surprisingly great for its size. More money would buy a better user interface and mp3 navigation features, but for those on a budget, the Insignia NS-SH513 is definitely worth a try.

... and they were already high. I've notice that online product reviews on sellers' websites are usually way too positive and should be taken half serious most of the time. So, several months ago, I went to the store and found the SH513 on display and listened to it. It paired right away to my cell phone and I was impressed. Santa (wife with the same checking acct number?) let me pick out a <$100 item this year and I have to say the speakers alone are worth the price. I had noticed in my store visit that the speakers had what looked like quality 2-way drivers. At home I connected them to my Yamaha stereo and was blown away by the soundstage. After a couple days of break-in the bass notes became even sweeter (to be fair a subwoofer addition would make this the perfect budget audiophile stereo system). This unit can fill a medium size room with crystal clear music. I watched a movie with them connected and found that dialogue was very clear as well. As an owner of Canadian made Paradigm speakers I didn't think Insignia would be the place to find my favorite bookshelf speakers in several years (sorry Andrew Jones) but whoever engineered this unit did something right. I never review things.

Bought one of these after reviewing in the store, and compared to the similar Sony. They both had the same features available. Decided to give the Insignia (Best Buy brand) a try as it seemed so similar and price was better by a lot. Set it up and CD player made a loud hum as it spun the CD. Exchanged for another. This one had a speaker that would not work. The tray on the CD player is very flimsy thin flexible plastic. Ended up going for the more quality system made by SONY and the CD tray, and everything else, is much nicer and better quality! Sorry Best Buy...you have some work to do on this Insignia product!

Hi there! I'm really sad to read that your shelf system is not working properly after 6 months only; however remember that you have a one year manufacturer's warranty with it and you can apply it by taking the item to your closest Best Buy store with your receipt and referring directly to the Geek Squad counter. -Elsa A. I was looking for a small unit that would support apps from my android devices that didn't cost $250 or more but still be able to put out a robust sound for my condo. This unit provided that sound in spades. For the price point I am extremely happy with the acoustic reproduction regardless of the applications or devices that are connected. Pro's: -Small yet powerful. Bass response is excellent for the size of speakers provided -VERY android compatible (although no charging capability) -Multiple inputs and the USB port is an added bonus (but check the USB temperature during operation as some of the smaller sticks can generate significant heat during operation) -FM works great even with the cheesy antenna provided. More preset stations than you'll ever need -Bluetooth pairing is effortless and although the instructions state a 33 foot range, I got 75 feet of flawless connectivity -Speaker wire provided is six foot per channel- a major bonus when most of the comparable brands have speakers that are permanently connected to the receiver -Set up is easy and intuitive. Anyone can do it -Great sound for a small price -Remote is clearly marked and easy to use -Compact design that fits anywhere -No issues with MP3 formats (USB or PC driven) and my iPod Shuffle interfaced without error Con's: -RCA plugs for auxiliary input. Recommend ordering a RCA-to-mini cable if you're connecting directly to a device -Headphone jack (3.5 mm) is located on the back of the unit -No mid-range control. Unit is limited to Bass and Treble adjustments only (the ONLY reason I gave this device a rating of 4.0 for sound quality) -Even using gold cables there is significant signal noise when connected to my LG HDTV- a common issue with RCA inputs, so I'd advise against using this device for home theater I was concerned that I'd be disappointed with my purchase because of how little I spent on a brand I've never heard of- especially being an audiophile- but I am very happy with this purchase!

Had to return the first stereo, one of the speakers was fried. Had no problems with the exchange. Got new one home and it works fine. Pretty good sound, pretty affordable. Easy to set up, easy to pair with phone and tablet. Good sound for one room. Got mine for $50 on deal of the day with $10 rewards cert.

The random playback is not available when playing MP3s from a memory stick or CD. Random only works on a regular CD. Makes it relatively worthless for me so I gave it away.

Bought this today and set it up tonight. Tried all the features except aux input.and playing .WAV files. FM - Excellent CD - Excellent MP3 on CD - Excellent MP3 on USB flash driive - Excellent Bluetooth - connected to my Android phone (Galaxy S5) at first attempt. Played Rhapsody and on-phone MP3s flawlessly. The only (tiny) downside I can think of that it's a little (only a little) slow to scan CDs and USB drives when they are first inserted. But I'm talking about maybe 10 seconds as opposed to 5, so a really minor issue. For $120, this is a truly amazing piece of kit. Although I'd already read most of the other reviews here, I was still extremely impressed when I heard the sound quality. Don't be dissuaded by a manufacturer name you've maybe not heard of; Insignia is Best Buy's own label brand. I've also owned an Insignia Blu-Ray player for around 5 years now, and that performs flawlessly as well.

I purchased the unit on line as a birthday gift - it didn't work at all. Returned to store, worst purchase ever made - what a piece of junk! I purchased a Sony unit instead and have been very satisfied. I had to ask the Best Buy rep - do you sell refurb equipment as new? I would not recommend the Insignia to anyone!
