Customers consistently note the Aspire R 15's responsive touchscreen, strong performance, and ease of use as significant advantages. Many appreciate its lightweight design and find it offers good value for the price. However, some users point to the hard drive's speed as a potential drawback, along with occasional fan noise and bloatware. A few also mention that the device can get warm during use.

Returned this

Garbage
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this laptop for my son for college. On paper this laptop sounds great. It worked great for less then 2 months then the screen turned blue and had an error message. We took it to geek squad they said the motherboard is bad so they sent it to acer to get fixed. Acer did whatever they did and sent it back. Geek squad turned it on to make sure it was working but it did the same thing. It was sent back to acer and now we wait. Save your money and but a better brand.

great for the price
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have used this computer for a couple weeks now, and overall I'm happy with it, here is a general review: Build Quality: It has a nice aluminum shell, with a rubber bottom feel to it. The keyboard and trackpad feel very nice for a computer in this price range. The backlit keyboard is a nice touch Screen Quality: Not bad. You can tell it is a lower end computer, but the screen is not bad either. There is some light bleed on the edges, but that is not unexpected for a computer in this price point. Performance: Again, not bad. I have had the computer lock up on me when just browsing the web, but I think a lot of that performance has to do with Windows 10 and not the hardware. I actually did get a Windows Blue Screen of Death on day two, but again I don't point that at the computer itself. Design: I love the 3 ways you can use this device. As a normal laptop, as a tablet, and as a table top touch screen computer. If you fold the screen all the way back, it acts as a tablet (and windows automatically goes into "tablet" mode) If you fold it backwards, but stop at an angle, the screen is propped up on a table, in tablet mode. This is probably my favorite mode to use it in. I feel that the device is just too heavy to use as a tablet, but resting on a table using the touch screen is nice. Battery life: You can easily get several hours out of this, but don't expect all day usage. Also, the battery is not user replaceable. So you cannot swap it out for a charged one, nor replace it if it goes bad without sending it in to Acer.

Dollars vs. features & quality.. great buy
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Initial review.. after a few days with the laptop, I'm really pleased with this product. Overall the out of box experience to setup and get going was really easy and painless. Going in I knew that I would be changing the HDD to a SSD (Which I had already), but for the cost this was planned, the 5400 RPM drive 1TB is slow but paired with Samsung 850EVO SSD, this laptop is really fast and significantly more responsive. 8GB and the flip top touch display is really nice and clean. Admittedly using this as a Tablet is not practical due to the weight, but in a seated position on your lap works really well. Surprisingly, not allot of bloat ware on the Laptop so cleaning it up was not very challenging. I was thinking about getting the HP ENV, the one with 12GB i7, But after doing a hands on eval.. I was not as pleased with the Laptop, vs. the price.. it was ~$200 more and couldn't really justify for basic use. And the acer caught my eye. I’m buying this for home use, email, doc’s and basic productivity and its more than plenty. I would say the one issue I may see with this is the angle to which the display is lifted.. if you are using this in the tablet mode there are some angles that when you touch the display it tends to fall down vs. staying firm. But outside of this.. no Optical drive which is really not a big deal given almost everything today is available in a digital format. The USB3 ports are really nice.. and using this with an external USB3 drive is super fast.. One gripe.. to install the SSD drive it was a bit challenging.. typically past laptops you could access this by either opening a panel or unscrewing the bottom cover and you have easy access.. this is not as easy,, and requires a bit of force to pull apart the bottom cover from the keyboard.. but once removed.. install and re-assembly was a breeze.. Not enough though for me to dock it a star.. Temperature wise.. I used this for >10hrs straight.. and I'd have to say its much much cooler than any AMD based laptop that I've had in the past.. the cooling fan is also very quite when its active.. Battery life is still being evaluated.. the 8hrs they claim is really when the laptop is run is saver mode with the display ~50%.. realistically.. I think on average use.. I was getting ~5hrs or so.. not sure though how this will execute if watching movies on it.. Overall though.. for the price and features its so far a great deal..

Not the best, but not the worst either.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When looking for a new laptop computer, many people understand the concept that a more expensive computer typically has more powerful tech specifications like faster processors, more RAM, larger internal storage capacity, and a larger display with (possibly) touchscreen functionality. This is not the case for the Acer Aspire R 15. At a lower price point compared to other leading brands, this machine gives you competent performance specs at a fraction of the price. That being said, there are some issues about this machine that I'd like to address. Upon unboxing the computer and it's accessories and powering it on for the first time, I noticed light bleed from the lower-left portion of the touchscreen display, as well as a yellow-y glowing film radiating throughout the display while the LCD screen was displaying a black background with a lime-green Acer logo on center. The machine was booting up for the first time, so I had plenty of time to investigate what was causing the display to look like that. As I touched the screen, I could notice the LCD itself was making liquid waves with just a normal amount of pressure applied to the display. As I applied pressure to the lower-left corner of the display, the lights would bend forward as if they were not permanently attached to the back of the LCD during manufacturing. Once the machine booted up Windows 10 and showed a bright color background, those issues then disappeared, but only temporarily. It was clear to me that attempting to watch a movie on this computer in a low-light setting was going to be uncomfortable because of the display's lighting issues. Now onto the machine itself and it's software. The backlit keyboard feels fascinating and is probably one of the nicest keyboards I have ever typed on... it almost feels like typing on a MacBook, somewhat. You also get a 10-key panel which is a nice addition to have. The trackpad is pretty responsive but you may want to adjust the sensitivity if it's too responsive for your own taste. While this computer does have some pretty impressive specs, like a 6th generation Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and plenty of storage space, it still feels somewhat slow once you've been using it for a few weeks. Windows takes about 2 minutes to load and once you're on the desktop, it takes up to an additional 3 minutes before the computer becomes usable. If playing the waiting game isn't a problem for you, then don't think twice about choosing this machine, but if you're looking for speedy performance from the get-go, I'd recommend looking for a machine with a solid state drive instead. Overall, this 2-in-1 computer is probably one of the nicest machines I have ever seen made by Acer, and the Aspire R 15 lets it be known that they are starting to up the ante on the quality of their computers so they can be reasonably competent with the likes of Apple, Lenovo, and HP. There still are some issues with quality control, however, and I'm sure Acer is working to ensure that these issues are addressed as quickly as possible. If you do end up picking this computer, I hope your display doesn't have any lighting issues like the ones I personally experienced. The display itself is exceptional, it looks wonderful and movies in 1080p pop in delicious color. Of course, in my personal case, movies with low lighting in a dark room aren't very eye pleasing due to the light bleed on this particular unit. All it takes for Acer is to improve quality control in their manufacturing and ensure that every unit they make is free of issues before hitting store shelves.

Displeased
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am grossly unimpressed with this laptop. I bought for a kids computer, just needed basic Internet functions for online learning for the kids. This computer out if the box seems slow and bogged down, the TouchPad is probably my biggest annoyance...you need to click 3-4 times on order to make it work. Would not recommend to anyone.

Surprisingly Impressed
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This laptop is such a great device to have around the home. I love that I can use it as a laptop, and then just switch to a tablet in a matter of seconds. The touch screen is responsive and accurate. I wish the start up was a little faster, but so far fairly great performance. I would have given 5 stars if the general speed was a little faster. The build quality is great and the bottom of the laptop has a nice soft feel. I would definitely recommend as a primary laptop.

Not worth the money
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Not worth the money I have been in the computer business for over 10 years and this is by far the worst computer ever purchased. Brought it home and it would not connect to my network unless I was using a VPN I have brand-new modem router's hooked to my home this system just would not connect and runs extremely slow.

Stopped Working before 5 Weeks
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Purchased the laptop for my son's academic summer camp. He was out of state for 5 weeks and at the start of the 5th week it completely stopped working and would not even take a charge. I had to take it back to the store and the Geek Squad had to replace the motherboard. It is certainly disconcerting to say the least.

Junk
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this on the recommendation of the sales person. She was nice and seemed to be very knowledgeable of the products. This computer however is a mistake. It's slow, stops working and needs restart many times a day. Very disappointed. In the past Bust Buy has been a good place for me to shop. Can't say that now

Slow
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This laptop is very slow and has many glitches. I used to think acer was a cheap brand so I was weary to buy this, but the Best Buy sales people talked me into it. I really regret buying this laptop, it performs like a cheap $150 laptop, but costs a lot more.

Premium Feeling w/ Below Avg Performance
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Build quality seems top notch for the most part. The brushed metal material used for most of the body and the chrome metal trim used both lead to a premium feeling device which I'd expect to cost much more than these do. Though it's been a short time that I've had the computer, the hinge also seems incredibly sturdy, something which is of large concern for a device of this type. The display is no more than adequate. In particular, my computer suffers from a pretty significant amount of light bleed from the edges. The display is bright and renders colors well, but the light bleed severely impacts contrast ratio in parts of the screen where it's bad. The native 1080 resolution fits this screen size well in my opinion; it seems the trend these days is to include 4k resolution on screens of this size+, but in my experience, this has far more downsides than upsides (performance takes a hit, things render too small for comfort, etc). The touchscreen is also adequate. I haven't experienced any real issues with touch registration or anything of the sort. Performance is underwhelming. In general, things are snappy but there are definitely times when things feel sluggish. Of particular note, I was surprised at how long it takes from startup to desktop loaded. Most of this is probably attributable to the fact that the computer comes with a traditional platter drive instead of a solid state drive. This, along with the bloatware which Acer includes out of the box, definitely has more of an impact than I'd expect for a 2016 laptop with a 6th generation Intel i5 processor. Lightweight tasks like browsing and email are obviously well handled. Anything more (video editing, light gaming, etc) may suffer. The keyboard is very good. The buttons have a pleasant amount of travel, which makes typing very comfortable. The layout is also very good, making use of most of the available real estate to include a number pad and well spaced keys. The only oddity here is the enter button, which for some unknown reason, extends upwards to the "\" button, which makes hitting the enter key prone to mistakes. The touchpad isn't great. In general, I'm not a fan of touchpads which don't have dedicated left/right click buttons like this one. The pad also has a surprising lot of play; the pad gives way to a light amount of pressure which makes it feel like it's not properly seated. I'm not sure if this is just an issue with mine or not, but it's slightly annoying. Also, the coating feels a bit "tacky" which makes using it more of chore than others I've used. In general, this is definitely a sufficient computer. Out of the box, it certainly won't wow by merit of its performance, but as mentioned above, I suspect replacing its drive with an SSD (which I plan to do imminently) should help with this. Overall, this feels slightly more premium than the price Acer is charging.
