Simple and Easy to Use!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I decided to pick up Acer Chromebook 314 Laptop with 14" screen for my daily use to check on my emails, browse news and of course catch up on YouTube videos. This laptop is definitely the right fit for the needs of any student or anyone who does not need a Windows full performance notebook. This Acer is modestly built with 4GB of LPDDR4 memory, which I wish in this day and age would be bumped to at least 8GB. It also has a 64GB eMMC hard drive which again is a smallish drive and needs to be at least at 256GB to be fully used to its potential. There are games and some apps that will eat the 64GB in no time nowadays. So the RAM and the Hard drive space are my only gripes for this notebook. I find it using more often than my Windows 11 as I can simply open any Word or Excel files with the help of Google Documents, touch screen is a nice feature however I never use it as I forget about it. You can load all kinds of Android based apps on this laptop and be ready to be entertained. T The build of the notebook is as good as it gets and Chrome OS never disappoints. I know that I will get future Chrome updates for at least 4 years and it is the most secure and safest OS compared to other operating systems out there. The keyboard is pretty good and I had no trouble with speed typing. If you are looking for a simple solution to get you online and be up to date with what's going on, get yourself an affordable Chromebook from Acer and enjoy!

A really great Chromebook!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As the title suggests, this is a great little Chromebook that combines portability with just the right amount of functionality. Weighing in at least than 3 1/2 pounds, it's super light and easy to travel/commute with. The 14" HD screen is also the perfect combination of not being too big and not being too small, again combining portability with functionality. It also has WiFi 5 built in, which is more than fast enough for a Chromebook. Chrome OS continues to be stable despite some of the limitations it has compared to other operating systems, it is perfect again for using the Google suite and traveling/commuting though. Battery life is also fantastic, coming in at over 12 hours as advertised, which means you can more than use it all day without having to charge. But if you do have to charge, you can plug in most USB-C chargers. I know this will wane over time like all batteries, but it is starting from a really great place, but it also appears replaceable if needed. Overall, this is a nifty little Chromebook, perfect for work or school using the Google suite and for video streaming/web browsing.

Light Duty Machine Does Not Impress
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This Acer Chromebook is a middle of the road device. Nothing really impresses but nothing really disappoints. The unit arrived requiring a charge. It was strange because most electronic devices are shipped with some charge - let you get it up and running so you're using it right after unboxing while it charges. Instead, I ended up grabbing a nearby USB-C cable, plugging it in to charge, and then getting back to the chromebook a couple hours later. It's nice that it charges with relatively low power, just the normal 18W capable cell phone chargers that at this point are everywhere in my house. After charging, I went through the initial chromebook setup and the big thing I noticed was the battery life - an estimated 14 hours. Would be great for an all day device that you take off the charger in the morning and only need to put it back on in the evening. Once setup was complete, I next ran through a few things on Youtube to get an idea of the display and sound quality. The sound is pretty mediocre. It seems to just have two speakers in the palm rest next to the track pad and they're very hollow sounding. The quality, or lack thereof is pretty striking and obvious. Playing the same video on my phone for comparison just reinforced that conclusion. 1080p playback looked good. Not the best, but no issues would bother me - provided that the laptop is not in a room that's too bright. The screen definitely doesn't have the contrast ratio or brightness to be used outdoors or in a bright room. Trying out the webcam on a google meet call, I was similarly underwhelmed. It did ok, but barely matched the front facing camera on my phone which is itself problematic because the camera is actually behind the screen. So, the webcam on this chromebook with nothing blocking it is barely as good as one that sits behind a screen with actual pixels over it. Otherwise, thing worked well. The mic pickup is good and I didn't experience any stuttering issues. Along with the video call trial, I also attempted to exercise the CPU, seeing how many different things I could have going at the same time. The chromebook does seem to take some time to launch new applications and there was definitely slowdown with the meet call, a couple tabs playing youtube, chrome remote desktop, and the play store running. So, while this is something one could theoretically sit with and use all day, I'd still need to keep it to light tasks and don't multitask too much on the machine like I can do on my desktop or work laptop. Physically, the chromebook seems well made. Screen folds back to almost 180 degrees. While I have some concerns on how well it would hold up in a home with children and in particular, becoming the device they get to use versus borrowing one of my laptops, there were no obvious mechancal flaws or weak points or bits that would obviously break just from normal use. The touchscreen worked well for the most part. I mostly didn't use aside from playing games from the play store. The place outside games where I used it the most - chrome remote desktop, had issues though I think it was more with how the app handles registration of mouse "clicks" when you tap the screen. It was always slightly off from what I actually tapped on the remote machine. My only other nitpicks were the keyboard and the behavior of gestures. So in chrome remote desktop, to show the keyboard/mouse menu you use a three finger swipe down from the top of the screen. As this is a touch screen device, this worked well from the touch screen. However, given a lack of dedicated button for this function and that not all chromebooks are touch screens or maybe not all people would want to use touch, I expected the gesture to also work from the trackpad - nope. The two finger tap to perform a mouse right click - also nope. And I already mentioned tapping the screen to left click in remote desktop always registered the touch slightly below where your finger touched the screen. As touches were accurate in other apps, this is an issue with the remote desktop app rather than the Acer. Still, annoying. And further exacerbated by a lack of a "windows" button (which makes sense on a chromebook) or function button that you can map to that purpose specifically for remote desktop. So essentially, I'm blocked from effective use of my desktop machine to work around some of the performance issues this machine has. So unfortunately for me, while it has all day promise, it's not for me and instead will due light duty as the primary kid laptop.
