SUMMARY: This is my first time using a Chromebook for personal use, as before i have only used one provided by my employer. My laptop is dying, and I am looking for a cost-effective replacement so when the opportunity came to try this model out from Acer, I took it. This Chromebook is basic to say the least. It does not have high-end features or mind-blowing graphics. It is not particularly suited for gaming due to only having 4GB of RAM (you need 16GB or more for optimum gaming, a minimum of 8GB for gaming at a lower quality). It does not have the fastest processor and only has 128GB of storage, which is considered small for a laptop; by comparison, most entry-level laptops start with 256GB of storage. However, the amount of storage you need depends on how you typically use the device, and if you only use a laptop to browse the internet, check your email, watch YouTube videos, go on Facebook, stream music from Spotify or Pandora, and maybe watch Netflix, i think you will do fine with this choice of Chromebook. Right of the back, I would say this is best suited for a student, specifically an elementary school student, that only needs a computer to do virtual learning and essay writing. After students, I would recommend this Chromebook for senior citizens that are not particularly tech savvy and just want something relatively easy to use. These are the individuals that only need a computer for email and internet access. DESIGN This model has a large LCD screen of 15.6 inches and the body of the Chromebook comes in an attractive silver. The screen comes in HD resolution, and it uses an intel UHD graphics card. It has a front-facing camera (perfect for zoom and skype calls). The Chromebook feels heavy at almost 4 pounds, especially in one hand and when it is closed. The track pad is very responsive; it responds to taps and hard press. This is one of those laptops that as soon as you raise the screen, the machine powers on without you having to press the power button. It has very little memory built in, which is to be expected of a Chromebook. This issue can easily be remedied with the use of external hard drives via the two available ports on the device. PROS The biggest pro is the cost. It is less than $500.00. I believe this specific model is $349.00. It is hard to find a new laptop for under $500.00. You will not have to worry about breaking the bank on this one, especially if you need something quick or are looking for back-to-school deals for your school-aged, loved ones. Second pro is the time it took to setup the Chromebook. It took me 11 minutes in total to create a profile and password, log into my email, connect to my Wi-Fi, change my display to dark theme (yes, you get to choose between a light or dark themed display). I was admittedly distracted as I was setting this up, so it may take someone else less time to complete the setup process. A third pro is that I can use Microsoft word on it. If you use the subscription-based version of Microsoft like I do, you are in luck. All google chrome books have an app store where you can download a variety of apps, including Microsoft office suite. You must download the app; you cannot install Microsoft office suite products any other way. If you are not a fan of Microsoft word, you can always use google docs instead on this Chromebook. I used Google docs in college to submit papers and PowerPoint projects with no issues. The Bluetooth functionality is great; it synchs with my Polk soundbar and my apple airPods pro without any problems. A fourth pro is that while the device can overheat quickly, it cools down quickly too which means the vents on the bottom are working. A fifth pro is the battery life. The specs say it can get about 10 hours of life and I would say this is pretty accurate. I have been using it for about 3 hours a day and putting it in sleep mode after each use. Based on that light usage, I got three days' worth of usage without having to plug the charger in. The device also seems to charge fast. The lowest I've seen my battery get to is 40%, and it was fully charged in an hour or less. Lastly, I love that the screen comes with the ability to use dark theme mode, as it makes it easier on my eyes to look at the screen, especially at night. CONS This may be an odd one, but I cannot stand that there is not a designated CAPS lock button built into the keyboard. Yes, you can always turn on the CAPS by hitting alt + the Launcher button, but I find that to be way more annoying than just clicking one button. I notice that i reach for the invisible CAPS button out of instinct because the Launcher button is housed exactly where the CAPS button should be. This will take a while to get used to if you are like me and frequently use this button on other computers. I also do not like that this Chromebook does not have a backlit keyboard. I like to use my computer in dark rooms, sometimes pitch black, so having the ability to turn the backlit keyboard off and on would’ve been ideal. I understand they probably declined to include this option to produce optimal battery life, but this is still a standard feature that i prefer to have. Also, if I am viewing youtube videos late at night, a backlit keyboard makes it easier to see what I am typing into the search bar. The sound quality is also awful (maybe because the speakers are located on the bottom and the sound comes out slightly muffled to me) and it is not the brightest or most vibrant screen to look at. This was disappointing as i was hoping to use this for Netflix and Hulu viewing. CONCLUSION This laptop is not for everyone. You will not use it for heavy gaming or video editing. This is not the best device to use for viewing streaming services. It is meant for a basic user that is not computer savvy nor requires a ton of power. It is perfect for simple word documents and internet browsing. You can use it for quick video uploads and some minor photo editing. While not the most enjoyable screen to view Netflix, Hulu and YouTube on, you can use this for streaming services. Since the audio coming from the device itself is poor, I recommend pairing your wireless headphones with it or connecting to a soundbar for better audio.
