Great screen with 120Hz which is unusual for a Chromebook, and even for laptops in this price category. The build quality is good as well, keyboard is okay.

Great Screen, Great Chromebook, Terrible Laptop

As my first Chromebook, my thoughts on the Acer 516 is mixed, and I will try to keep my thoughts on Chromebook OS separate from the hardware.
From a hardware standpoint, the quality is a mixed bag. As the highlight, the screen is very nice, bright, color accurate (near 100% sRGB), and has a high refresh rate (at least for a Chromebook). The display is big and very lovely to look at and use and by far the best Chromebook display you can buy (unless you convert a Windows laptop into a Chromebook). The materials of the laptop frame are also very nice with a mix of metal and plastic. Those parts feel premium. However, the keyboard is subpar and inconsistent across the keys. Some keys have a different response than others which makes typing “OK”, but not great. And the trackpad is just plain awful. It feels OK, but the tracking is terrible, and that is the primary reason I returned it to the store. Also, the unit has an Intel i5, and while that was a selling point for speed, the battery life was less than 5 hours, which is pretty terrible in comparison to most other current generation i5 laptops out there.
One of my aims was to have a second travel laptop that would have all day battery (my other is a battery hog gaming rig). Yes, other gaming laptops only get 4 hours or so, but this laptop is really only streaming using Nvidia, and not “gaming” in the typical sense, as there is no dedicated GPU, so the lack of battery life makes no sense. I assume the giant screen is using much of the capacity.
I also feel that Chromebook OS is still pretty limited and did not match up well with the higher 2560x1600 resolution. Many of the applications use a “tablet” window mode when launched, which only uses a small part of the display and makes some apps pretty much useless due to being too small to read. There is a scalable mode for apps, but it was very glitchy with some of the programs.
That said, the Nvidia GeForce Now service on the laptop was excellent, and the outstanding display and refresh looked great and worked well. My view is that as a GeForce Now machine, it works great as long as you have a gamepad and are not 100% reliant on the trackpad and the keyboard. This machine would also work well for some light photography work as you can easily load Linux and use Gimp or other software to expand the use of the machine. And, for a student that is limited to a Chromebook at school, this would be a fantastic upgrade.
But the biggest issue is the price versus the overall package you get in return. If you get it on sale, it might be worth it. However, if you spend $100 to $150 more, you can get a full Window’s laptop with much better overall capabilities and similar hardware. Just can’t recommend it.

The display and performance of this device are outstanding! I purchased this device for my daughter and she loves it. We've not thrown anything at this chromebook that has slowed it down. As good is the performance is, the star of this device is the display. I could easily use this device as a productivity machine with Linux and Android apps. The trackpad is very good. The keyboard is a little mushy for my taste, but the RGB lighting is great. The speakers have good volume, but very little bass. I'm very happy with this chromebook and highly recommend it.

No complaints so far after a year of light use for online work and general browsing. I don't really play games on it so I cannot say anything about that.

Fast, smooth, good display, I have no complaints, probably the best computer that I've ever owned. I'm not sure of the battery life as I've never unplugged it.

Nice processing power combined with a high resolution 16in 120hz screen makes for a wonderful ChromeOS experience. The screen has spoiled me. It's hard to look at regular 60hz laptop screens anymore. For the gamers out there, GeForce Now runs really really well. Now I know why reviewers like Chrome Unboxed have given this laptop such glowing reviews. Well done, Acer.

Unexpected Power for a Chromebook

No matter the devices I own, I always keep a Chromebook at hand. In this particular device, I saw another Chromebook enthusiast review with high recommendations. The 16" screen with 120hz refresh rate is absolutely stunning, something not often heard of in a Chromebook. Great ports, RBG backlit keys, and good battery life really make this a great gaming chromebook for streaming or just every day use. Good decision I made to buy this device.

Really good chromebook for the price if you want a large screen. I returned it because 16 inches was just too big, but it's a great deal for a chromebook.
