This Chromebook came without the OS already installed and I had to install it myself. It was defective, and the only reason I decided to keep it was because I got it on a Black Friday sale.

The Acer Chromebook Spin 311 is the first device I've used to experience ChromeOS. I recently moved to a mobile phone that uses the Android operating system, and coming from a mostly Apple ecosystem, I wanted to understand and experience Google's ecosystem. The Spin 311 is a very affordable option for this, very portable, and also gives me exposure to ChromeOS. As a techy sort of person, I really enjoy this sort of experience. The Spin 311 is a very solid device, physically, for being so affordable. It has a few what I would call compromises to more expensive machines, with a very large "chin" under the screen, a lower resolution, and a mostly plastic body. The keyboard doesn't have backlighting. The speakers are pointed downward and are small. The screen is highly reflective. The amount of storage on the device is limited (64GB) and the processor is not the speediest. I have noticed studders occasionally, though it’s been very rare. It's a budget device. What has surprised me about the Spin 311 is that for a budget machine, it does some things very well. The battery life is amazing. It is rated for 15 hours of life on average, and and I have experienced that, or better, in everyday use. The touch screen is admirably very sensitive for the low resolution it has, so it helps with interaction on less resolution. The hinge that allows it to become a tablet sort of form factor feels very solid and doesn't make me worried about breaks. There is a USB A and USB C port for expansion, as well as a headphone jack. The keyboard has a surprising amount of key travel, making the typing experience superior to most tablet keyboards, including Apple's. ChromeOS has grown into a very well rounded operating system, and stands toe to toe with my Windows machine as well as my Mac. It does still feel very much tied to the net, and so I anticipate a scenario where I may lack functionality without the net. Google has brought in the ability to download for offline use, and with the Play Store, I can pretty effectively have an Android like experience on a laptop. And the ecosystem that is built between the Spin 311 and my Android phone has been at least 98% comparable to my experience with Apple's ecosystem. I have a few caveats to my overall pleasure to using this device. One is that you are limited to either web based applications, such as Microsoft Office online, or to mobile based apps from the Play Store. There is no clear path to say a full installation of Microsoft Office or AutoCAD, and so that sort of need would require a Mac or Windows computer, both of which come at a much higher cost. On an everyday basis though, the Spin 311 gives you access to a well rounded ecosystem with messaging and productivity and entertainment, a lightweight and long-life device, and a great value.

The acer chromebook is by far one of the best laptops I have used. It is perfect for when you want to kick back, relax and put on a show or movie. One of the best features for watching movies or shows is that the laptop can fold in half to give you a tablet. It makes watching shows and movies great since you don't have to have the keyboard in front of you at all times. This laptop has phenomenal graphics with a very high-quality touch screen. It is perfect for workflow and/or getting school work done. The laptop is so light-weight that It's like you aren't even using it at times. The acer chromebook has amazing battery life. I charged it once after I took it out of the box and haven't needed to since. The battery lasts so long and it's very convenient. The chromebook has great audio. It's very high quality and very clear. I found that it is very easy to change the sound level just by using the buttons on the side which most laptops do not have. I found that the Acer Chromebook is one of the best laptops I have ever used and if anyone is in the market for a new laptop, I say this is a go-to option.

Chromebooks were launched in 2011 as an alternative to netbooks (for anyone that remembers those) and I’ve used them since then! The big change for me was when they became available with a 360-degree hinge, and I could have an all-in-one unit instead of a table with a keyboard case. So now I have an all-in-one portable device with superior battery life, that is versatile enough for entertainment purposes and to use to remote into my work system at a price that can’t be beaten in my opinion. The unit runs Chrome OS and comes with pre-loaded apps that can be deleted, and access to thousands of apps through the Google apps store. These are Chrome OS apps, but you can find a way online to allow the unit to run in Linux mode if you want to install traditional Android APKs. The display is 11.6” HD 1366 x 768 with multi-touch that has Antimicrobial Corning Gorilla Glass. As stated, you can use the machine as a standard screen with a keyboard, as a tablet, or in “tent mode” or a reverse tablet (rest it on the keyboard) for entertainment purposes. There are also numerous mice you can purchase that will work with Chrome touchpads aren’t your preference. Included is an Octa-Core ARM MediaTek processor which accounts for the long battery life and the boot time is a stated 8 seconds! There is 64GB onboard storage and 4GB of ram, but with cloud storage and a USB-C and USB-A port, there are options for portable storage. The stated battery life is up to 15 hours. In the past 3 days, I’ve used the Chromebook at least 3 hours per day and I still have 37% or 4 hours and 19 minutes left at 70% screen brightness. The only item on my “wish list” would be a back lit keyboard, but then the battery life would take a hit. If I end up using it in the dark very often, I’ll purchase one of the many keyboard films available for it with reflective characters.

      Dear Katrina,
Chromebooks are different from Windows laptop products in that they are designed to be used primarily while connected to the Internet, with most applications and documents living in the cloud. Because of this they don’t have much for on board storage but they also are not expensive either. Chromebooks run off apps like an Android phone or tablet so you cannot download and install applications or .exe files. If you need to use third party software applications that must be installed on the computer, a Chromebook is likely not for you, where a Windows laptop would suit you better. We understand you returned the Chromebook but if you should need assistance with an Acer product in the future, please contact our support team at 1-866-695-2237, chat or social media, and we will be glad to help.

This little Chromebook is the best! I needed a lightweight laptop to take my writing work with me when I go out. This little thing is super light, super sturdy, and the battery lasts a ridiculously long time! I also love how fast it boots up and restarts. I use Chrome Vox, the voice over for people with vision loss and it works great too. I've had a few minor issues here and there, but I expected that. E.g. I can't copy text from a web page using Chrome Vox. But I'm still learning too... Overall, this little thing is well made, fast, easy to type on, has long battery life, and is really light to carry with me. I highly recommend it to anyone needing a portable, well made computer.

This is a good entry level device. It is not a device that I would use in my ordinary day to day as its weaknesses are not something I am willing to have. But it is an excellent first device for a kid to take to school and beat up a little bit and learn to type on. So depending on what you are looking for this may be perfect. The main weaknesses are simple, the processor is entry level so if you are coming from a high end device it will feel like you are in slow motion just a little bit, but for my oldest kid that is ready to start typing and is coming from an entry level tablet he is completely used to the speed at which this goes. The screen has giant bezels but looks decent. The touch pad is definitely an entry level mouse pad and doesn’t feel amazing but it works well enough. Now to the good things. The keyboard feels nice, it charges from multiple levels of USB C (I plugged it into a 5v USBC port just to see) and it’s got that instant on that is so awesome with Chromebooks, you can install Linux on it if you need a more capable operating system. The sound is loud enough and decent enough and overall it is a great little starter package. I think the most important part is the touch screen. Chrome OS is completely usable with a mouse but the android apps which make Chromebooks really useful sometimes need a touchscreen to function properly I’ve found so that addition of the touchscreen is crucial. The other part of the touchscreen being useful is that the keyboard flips around so that it is more of a tablet experience. Overall I like the ability to flip over and be a tablet but also be a fully-fledged laptop form as well as ‘lapabilty’ is definitely a tablets downfall. Basically, if you are looking for a first type of device that your kid can learn to type on, have access to word, excel, PowerPoint, and other stuff online (or Google’s equivalent) this is an excellent choice, or if you are used to entry level devices this will run much better than an equivalently priced windows OS for longer I’ve found. If you need full access to Word (and all of Microsoft’s suite) or it outside of the browser I would not recommend this product.

A Solid Product for the Low-End Chromebook Niche

Reviewing the Acer - Chromebook Spin 311 – 11.6" 2-in-1 Touch Screen Laptop means recognizing the particular niche represented by this inexpensive, entry-level computer. This is designed for basic use. For grade school, home, or younger users in general. It was easy to set up. Plugged it in to let it charge. Turned it on. Chose a language and country. Signed in to my Google account. Ready to go. Connecting to wifi - and a bluetooth speaker - were both smooth. It comes with basic start-up instructions. I would have liked a printed manual as well with more information. You can access more information online. It has a lot of flexibility for the price - laptop, video viewing, tablet mode, touchscreen. Very handy. These features are not high quality, but they are definitely useable. One unexpected surprise was the quality of the speakers. They were loud and clear. The quality of the camera is acceptable, but can look grainy. And that leads to the weakest feature of this Chromebook - the screen. There is a large bezel, most likely in order to allow room for the comfortably-sized keyboard. But the main issue is that this is an HD screen, not a 4k. That should be adequate, but somehow it appears to lose resolution or sharp clarity when you expand a video into full-screen mode. This observation is probably intensified by the fact that my primary laptop has a high-resolutions screen. As I mentioned above, this is an inexpensive, entry-level Chromebook. It’s not appropriate to compare it with more expensive laptops. It has a good set of features for a great price. If your expectations are adjusted accordingly, you should be pleased with what you get. I have given it 4 stars and do recommend it as being worth seriously considering for those who have realistic expectations for this particular niche.

The Acer - Chromebook Spin 311 – 11.6" 2-in-1 Touch Screen Laptop - MediaTek Kompanio 500 MT8183C – 4GB LPDDR4X – 64GB eMMC - Pure Silver is a compact device that can perform many of the functions of a large laptop computer. All of the most used Google apps are available. I have access to Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Chat, Keep. TV, Screencast, etc. Google meet allows me to have premium video meetings for free. I can use Phone hub to connect to my phones’ hotspot and I can text on my chromebook after pairing with my phone. Along with the Google Play store for installing apps, there is the Chrome web store for attaching extensions. Gestures can be used to switch between apps and interact with the chromebook. It has screencast that allows me to create and record my screens lessons and demonstrations. I can make drawings on a blank page with canvas. Of course, as a two and one device, it can be used as a mini laptop or tablet. My only let down appeared when I was trying to install some of my favorite apps that I have used for years. Most of my apps are downloaded from a website and not the Play Store. Unfortunately, for me, I was not allowed to install any app not in the Google Play or Chrome app stores. I am not allowed to “Jailbreak” the Chrome book and install from unknown sources. This means using Google Play and Chrome Store exclusively for apps, when they do not have all apps, nor do they have the best apps. All of the Google apps have in app purchasing which equates to spending money. Why must I spend money, when there are free apps outside of Google’s ownership that get the job done? I then attached my CDROM via the one USB to see if I could install any software I already own. I was not allowed. I received the message, “This file is designed for a PC using windows software. This is not compatible with your device which runs Chrome OS.” In other words, spend more money on an app to duplicate software already owned. Besides that one discrepancy, the Acer - Chromebook Spin 311 – 11.6" 2-in-1 Touch Screen Laptop - MediaTek Kompanio 500 MT8183C – 4GB LPDDR4X – 64GB eMMC - Pure Silver is a decent little computer.

As a budget chromebook, there will be compromises. That said, I don't find them detracting from the capabilities of a very flexible and capable laptop. The display is a 720p HD display rather than a full HD 1080p display. As the display size is only 11.6", an HD display is more than adequate, text is clear and easy to read and videos are displayed clearly and smoothly. The build quality is excellent. Although the shell is plastic, it's sturdy with no real flex. It's a handsome matte silver and shouldn't show fingerprints. The display is a fairly bright gorilla glass touch screen, and seems to be responsive. It also enables it to function well as a laptop or tablet. The keyboard is one of the nicer I have seen on a laptop with excellent pitch and feel. It makes typing easy,. Battery life seems to be excellent and a battery charge should provide you with at least a full day of use before recharging. The processor is a Mediatek MT 8183c processor and seems to be more than adequate. Operation was smooth and responsive, I never felt as though the processor was holding the unit back. The 4 gig of memory is average for a budget Chromebook and is more than adequate and the 64 Gig of eMMC storage should be fine, especially as Chromebooks depend heavily on cloud storage. The device converts easily between laptop and tablet mode. Although it tends to be a bit heavy as a tablet, it does a good job, I just prop it on my stomach while reclined. It makes a perfectly fine media device, used both as a tablet or as a freestanding "A Frame" device. The speakers are clear, have good frequency response and very good volume. If there is any shortcoming, it would be in the very wide bezel. Frankly, I don't have a problem with it and it also makes the device a bit wider which improves the keyboard.
