Great entry level gaming laptop that's upgradeable

This is my very first go at a pure gaming laptop. I always had gaming desktop but never tried a laptop version before...
First things first... being a gaming laptop, it is noticeably thicker than the new standards of laptop. At 1.1", it's still portable, but you can definitely see/feel the difference. Performance is very good, as I have used it to play Fortnite, PUBG and DOTA 2. The Matte finish is a plus since I am a fan of it (Less glare). With 8GB DDR4 installed (Max 32GB) and a 1TB 7200RPM HD, I would recommend upgrading to a SSD and minimum of 16GB DDR4 for optimum performance for GPU hungry gaming. The upgrades where easy to install since there are dedicated slot openings on the bottom of the laptop.
Overall, for my first gaming laptop... having the ability to take gaming mobility is a plus for my travels. The added HDMI port makings gaming over a 4K/HDTV a breeze. For the price, this is a great buy at an entry level gaming laptop. Also, just be aware that since this is a gaming laptop, you will hear fan noise, but like most pc gamers, I play with a headset so it doesn't bother me. Thanks.

I bought this laptop for my daughter so she can play World of Warcraft (WOW) and to do school work. I chose the Acer - Nitro 5 for its combination of I5 processor, discrete 1050 graphics card and the value offered at $599.
Pros:
Price. At $599 it was an excellent value
Performance: With an I5 processor and an NVDIA GTX1050, playing WOW on this machine is a very good experience.
Connectivity: Unlike most newer laptops, this machine has all the ports you are looking for including USB-C, USB 3.0, HDMI out and gigabit Ethernet port, this machine can serve as (almost) a desktop replacement
Cons:
The machine gets warm and very noisy during graphics intensive gaming
The 7200 rpm hard drive is painfully slow
The keyboard back light is not very effective and seems to be there more for aesthetics instead of function
So far this computer has only been used to play WOW and do homework. The very first thing I did was replace the 7200 rpm 1TB drive with an SSD drive. It made a huge difference and is the 1 upgrade I would recommend you do as soon as poosible (or purchase the model that comes with the SSD drive).
Gaming on this machine has been a good experience so far. We are regularly seeing 95 fps playing WOW, graphics are smooth with no visible artifacts or tearing. That said, under heavy load, the Acer tends to run hot and the fans throttle up quickly. It makes the machine noisy, to the point that I will be purchasing a laptop cooler to mitigate this issue.
Access to the hard drive and RAM is very easy, with only 1 screw to remove to access. Swapping out the 7200 rpm hard drive with an SSD drive was a quick and simple process. You acces the RAM here as well. A little harder to get at is the M.2 NVME port, but having this as an option is a nice bonus. It's nice to still find a manufacturer like Acer that gives users options to upgrade their machines to increase performance and extend the useful life.
Screen resolution is good with a 1080p IPS display.
I like the keyboard layout as the keys were good size for a laptop and response to my touch-type technique. I find the red back-lit keyboard to be more gimmick than actual help when typing in a low light environment.
Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase and would recommend this machine to a (slightly more than) a casual gamer on a budget looking for a capable machine.

I'm not technical, but I pretend to be. This has the latest Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM, a dedicated NVIDIA graphics card with 4GB RAM... whatever all that means, it's pretty snappy. Boot time is a bit long, I suppose an SSD would speed that up, but its not bad. The screen is very nice. Gaming performance has been good, but I am playing games from a few years ago. (Fortnite ran well for the 2-3 minutes I was able to stay alive.) The speakers are pretty good for a laptop, they don't sound very tinny and even have a *hint* of bass. For the money, this thing brings a lot of specs and a very nice design at a very reasonable price point compared to some of the true gaming manufacturers.
Pros:
Specs are great for the price.
Plays current gen games at full or near full resolution.
Nice screen with great viewing angles.
Decent speakers...for a laptop.
Build quality is good despite a lot of plastic.
Cons:
Boot is slow.
Battery life is... terrible. (3 hours with light gaming use)
Not great for portability.

The laptop is hefty, for sure, but whatever performance it might give you is bogged down by the crapware you're used to from Acer by now (see photo for what Start Menu looks like immediately after unboxing).
NitroSense software comes pre-installed, but after a wipe of the machine (to alleviate the crapware problem) I found there's no place to re-download it. Awesome.
Outside the software experience, the hardware is good. It's only got an i5 but the extra graphics card helps out nicely. The screen is awesome and delivers black blacks and vibrant colors. In addition, USB-C, full HDMI, and built-in ethernet are all welcome additions to your typical laptop form factor.
Battery life on a full charge with no gaming usage is routinely around the 2-hour mark.

I needed to replace my 8 year old Toshiba laptop and I didn't want some ultra-light SSD, no storage, cloud dependent, touch-screen notebook computer. I wanted a big screen, a real hard-drive with tons of storage, a full keyboard, and the ability to upgrade. This laptop will allow me to upgrade the RAM myself and I can still add a SSD to make things even faster while keeping the HDD . The Intel i5 is plenty fast for me, the graphics are good thanks to Invidia, and the built in speakers are better than most. I love the lighted keyboard, too! Bluetooth is a plus. I was a little disappointed that there is no optical drive, but that was easily (and cheaply) remedied with an external for the few times I might need one for putting in an old school CD or ripping a DVD or Blu-Ray. Since this laptop was designed for gaming, it runs really cool, too! At this price point, I have no complaints.

There is so much to like about the Acer Nitro.
Nice style. Aggressive for gamers, or just a bit of elegant attitude for graphic designers/film editors
Good speed
Gorgeous graphics
Light for its size
The Nitro has the right connections,, loads quickly, performs well and costs less than a thousand bucks.
Only complaint - the red text on the keys is difficult to read, even with backlighting.
I use a wide range of computers and I now have to question ever spending more than $1000 for my needs. Well done Acer.

Basic/mid range gaming PC

If you're in the market for an entry level gaming PC, this is an OK choice. As far as specs, the only thing that separates this gaming PC from a regular PC is the video card. The 8GB of RAM, 1TB hard drive are fairly standard for all PCs these days. This has the usual features/specs as any other PC such as HDMI port, i5 processor, AC WiFi, etc. The video card is what sets this PC a part from other "normal" PCs. As far as gaming goes, this will run most games out there at medium graphics and some on full/high graphics. You can set the speed of the fans to keep the PC cool and the red keyboard backlight is pretty nice as well.
Overall, I think this is an OK beginner/intermediate gaming laptop. To make it a nicer gaming PC, I think upping the RAM to 16GB (it holds 32GB max) and possibly replacing the HD to a SSD would make this a much nicer gaming PC.

I was looking to replace my sons 5 year old desktop for gaming. There was a good discount on this one and the graphic card was the main reason i picked it. I had to add more ram and probably swap the drive with a ssd in the future. But he is happy with it. Just delete the crap that comes preinstalled. It is heavy but if you are not moving it everyday it is ok. The fans can be high coming out of the box. Sone tweeking helps. Cant crank up the settings in new games but it runs them without tearing or lag with proper settings.

Acer was never my choice in the past & I bought this based on a friend's recommendation for modeling & gaming. This laptop outperformed my expectations. Despite having visually appealing looks and slim, the laptop is too heavy and sound quality is just average. I also noticed that battery life is short, but it could be due to playing games & running modeling all the time. One good thing about the laptop is, user can upgrade RAM or HD.
My conclusion is, it is a valuable gaming laptop for the beginners at this price.

Overall a nice laptop. Keyboard is lit in red. Has all necessary ports, an HD webcam, and good Wi-Fi. Display is 1080p and I didn't have any problems with it. The games I played ran smoothly on 1080p with high settings. The only drawback is the very slow hard drive. Even though it is 1TB and has plenty of space, I replaced it with a 512GB SSD, which improved the laptop's performance significantly - a must upgrade.

OMG! How is deal possible? I am super stoked to have found this gaming notebook from Best Buy due to the recommendations from my friends. AT $719.99, it’s a steal. OMG, at $649, even my UK classmate also bought one that he will take home with him after this summer..
A friend told me that this system is Optane ready. Not willing to cough up the money for a large SSD, I went and purchased a 16GB Optane from Amazon (sorry Best Buy). The installation is straightforward on the Optane memory side (I cheated and re-used one of the screws on the HDD for the M.2 because my Optane didn’t come with a screw). I downloaded the Optane driver directly from Intel, uninstall the existing Intel RST App in my Nitro 5, and install the driver/App that I got from intel, reboot, open the new Intel RST app, enable Optane, reboot, than BAM! I likey A LOT! I am not sure if you can use the existing Intel RST app (I didn’t try).
I mean, yes, if I have money, I would rather have some crazy fast PCIe NVMe SSD’s with 512GB. I am super happy with this system as is. And, I am even happier with Optane in this entry gaming notebook.
Just FYI, I’ve made this purchase after reading many of the reviews, combined with recommendations from my friends. There was one review that said that Optane doesn’t work. Which did get me worried a bit before the purchase.
Love WoW, LoL, Warframe, Destiny 2, Overwatch, and now PUBG (luv/hate). This system handles them with great FPS.
CON: The biggest issue with this system is the HDD.

I added 8GB more memory. it can take up to 32GB. it should come with 16GB minimum for gaming anyways, being Oculus ready. I read forums on this laptop and it seemed that adding more memory fixed jittery problems. Now it is Oculus Ready, great graphics, great 1T hard drive, and a great price. It's Ace but now it's Acer with the added memory. Why can't they come with the second 8GB memory from the start? just saying

The title is just my opinion, though, but anyway, I bought this laptop in March of 2019, and the reason I picked this is because I saw it as a way for me to take my first steps into the world of PC gaming. I know I could have went and built a rig, but I just didn't feel ready to do that yet, and wanted something I knew was gonna work out of the box, but I digress!
As of December of 2020, this laptop still runs great! Though, when I first got this laptop, I went and got an extra 8GB stick to bring the laptop up to 16GB, but I'm glad I did just so I'm good to go for general use, multimedia, AND gaming!
On a side note, one of the latest games I played was Terminator Resistance from last year, and the game auto-detected my specs and set the graphical settings to the highest this laptop could handle, and the visuals were great on that game, and I don't think it cranked up the fan in my laptop at all! I haven't attempted to play any more demanding games, I'm kinda hesitant to. I mean, who wants to buy a game and then find out your PC can't even handle it? However, I digress yet again.
The backlit red LEDs on the keyboard are really nice, especially the red outlined WASD keys, but honestly, I don't use the laptop keyboard, because I have it setting on a laptop stand so I could use an external mouse and keyboard, so at least I'm preserving the laptop keyboard from wear and tear, though I have tried it before, and it feels solid enough, and quiet as well for someone that needs quiet keystrokes.
One last thing, and this is what knocked the rating down to 4 stars: the wifi antennas in this laptop, on occasions, stop the connection to the internet, and it won't show any networks at all. So if you get this laptop and this happens to you, right click the wifi icon, click "open network and internet settings," and then scroll down to find "change adapter options," and finally from there, right click on the icon titled wifi, and then click to disable, and repeat to re-enable it, and the wifi will work again. It's worked for me so far, anyway.
Anyway, my final take: This laptop has been great for me, and I have not been disappointed in this whatsoever so far. I'm aware though that as I write this review, there's more advanced hardware available now, but that's ok, because I plan to enjoy this laptop to the fullest, while biding my time before I make the leap to building my own rig! That is all, thanks for reading if you've made it this far!

Slow start up. I had a lot of updates to do before it felt like a newer computer. Still on the slow side but I'm going to let the geeks look at it before judging.
Once it's up and running it really does perform well. Im thinking of adding the m.2 ssd since it has the slot.
Norton bloatware needs to take a hike as well.
Back lit keys are nice.
Graphics are great.
Touch pad is good. Not sure if I can disable while using mouse. While Gaming I rest my thumb across it. I'm learning to not do that.
Good computer but not great right out of the box.

The battery. It's just terrible. Battery does not last long and you probably need to keep it charged. It sucks, because it's such a great laptop with a good processor and graphic card. The battery life.... is just bad. Definitely a good beginner gaming laptop to purchase.
120 FPS Overwatch on High settings
About 75-80 FPS on Ultra settings
Overall, very good graphics and FPS.
You don't really need to run any game on Ultra or higher, honestly.
NOTE: You also need to be plugged in, inorder to have the 60+ FPS.

I've wanted a gaming computer for a few years now, but was hesitant about paying the price or finding someone to build one since I only really play the Sims. I came across this one when I was replacing my old laptop. The price was in the range I was planning to spend anyway, so I decided to purchase this one. I am so glad I decided on this one. This is an excellent gaming computer for an unbelievable price. The graphics are incredible, the speed is amazing and I have absolutely no trouble with it overheating. It’s a great computer. Can handle a lot of video and graphics. It is not always fast on hard drive issues. The Windows updates take a while. But stick with it, they will help it work better. I got the 1 TB because I knew Windows 2010, MS Office 365 and Adobe suite take a lot of space. Other wise I would have gotten the solid state hard drive. For the price and what you can do with this computer, it’s worthy. Sound is not very loud. You’ll want to use headphones for better sound.
