ACER AN515-53 52FA NITRO 5 Laptop. The information on this laptop states it is a gaming laptop. I have a small issue with this statement. It is a perfectly good laptop, a little on the pricy side, but overall good. It states it has a GTX 1050 video card with 4 Gigs of DDR 5 ram. NVIDIA states this card comes with only 2 gigs, so ACER has added 2 more gigs. What they fail to tell you is that it only uses that video card when you play a game. Not like Solitaire, a real genuine top end game. The problem with this is that a GTX 1050 (not a Ti, just a standard 1050) is just on the edge of being effective playing the games of today. It will be just fine with last years, or more like 2 years ago games, but not the newest ones. It just doesn’t have the horse power to play them well. As long as you set your resolution and frame rate down just a bit you could get away with it, but to call yourself a gaming laptop, a newly built gaming laptop, you should be able to handle the newest games. It uses the on chip Intel UHD 630 video card for everything else. I’m guessing this is for power conservation. It comes with a 1 TB 7200 rpm HGST (WD) hard drive. It is powered by an i5-8300H processor, 4 cores and 8 threads at 2.3 GHz. A good processor for sure, but again for gaming it’s just on the edge of being good enough. It has 8 Gigs of DDR 4 ram all in 1 slot so there is a spare slot open for expansion without replacing both. I did like that about it. The HDD is replaceable and just sets in the case held in place by some blue foam. It attaches to the motherboard with a cable. On this laptop I will be replacing the HDD with a 1TB SSD, it will make the laptop more pleasant to use. A huge negative for me is the fact that you can not remove the battery. Yes, the battery is not user replaceable. There is a pinhole button to press to simulate removal and replacement of the battery. The keyboard is black with deep red lights. So when it’s lit up it’s kind of hard to see. When it’s not lit up it’s impossible to see. Black keys with deep red letters = no contrast definition. This must not be an issue for younger people, I see a lot of these red on black color keyboards. The track pad is large and responsive for the most part. Double clicking comes with some practice as well as right or left clicking. The right and left clicks are deep presses on the track pad corners, this allows you to use the full size of the track pad. However it also means that clicking has to be done carefully as the cursor will move it you’re not careful. Just takes some time to get used to. It has 1 USB 3 port, 2 USB 2 ports, 1 USB C port, an SD card reader slot, an HDMI port, an Ethernet jack, Bluetooth, 802.11ac WI-FI, and a headset jack as well as the charging jack. It also comes with a sleeve type carry case. No real protection in case you drop it. It does not come with a CD/DVD drive. The screen has a camera and dual microphones for stereo pickup. For whatever reason, the camera can not be used for Windows Hello Logon. This may be resolved in some later software patch or update. It is a full 1080 HD screen. There are 4 extra colored keys on the keyboard for gaming. The USB 3 port can be used for charging a device even when the laptop is turned off. Be careful with this, it will continue to power/charge a device plugged into this port even if the laptop is off and the charger has been disconnected. The speakers are under the front area of the bottom and will require you to place the laptop on something hard to get full response from them, they do sound good with plenty of volume. The laptop is a finger print magnet. Just touch it and you’ll leave an oily finger print. It’s just a bad finish choice by ACER. You may get used to either having a cloth around to clean your finger prints off, or you’ll get used to it looking dirty. In testing, using Geekbench 4, the GTX 1050 scored 63752. Just barely above the much older GTX 770 at 62874. The Intel UHD 630 scored 17275 but since this is not the gaming end I would not consider this a bad score. The CPU scored 3029 on single core and 10049 on multi core. Good results for an i5 at 2.3 GHz. On battery the fans (it has 2) only run when they absolutely have to, another battery life saver. When pushed to its limit the fan noise can get really loud. When not pushed you barely hear them at all. The overall battery life is not great. With average non-gaming use, web browsing, word processing, checking email, it lasted just over 5 hours. I expect this time to go up as the battery settles in. Batteries usually get a little better after 3 or 4 charges. My bottom line on this laptop, and make sure you are looking at the right NITRO 5 laptop, there seems to be many configurations of this unit. Don’t get confused. If the laptop you’re looking at doesn’t have the items I’ve mentioned above then this review is not for the laptop you’re looking at. For the price, you are getting a usable work station laptop that can play some games. By the time you add an SSD, more ram, and an external CD/DVD drive, you’ll be at the cost of a really good work station laptop that can play any game. I can not see spending the money on this laptop that misses the mark at this price point. This laptop seems to be priced about $150.00 to $200.00 higher than an equivalent unit from other manufactures. Just me, but I am not willing to spend the extra $150.00 to $200.00 more just to have a case and keyboard that look cool. I can forgive the missing CD/DVD drive as this is the future of laptops, but for my money I want power. For the occasional gamer this may suite your needs. If you are really looking for a gaming laptop, look for something better. ACER has better NITRO gaming laptops in their lineup, this one falls short.

This is my first gaming computer. It has a lot of great qualities. Setup is very easy. Just turn it on and follow on-screen instructions while listening to Cortana guiding you through. The video card is absolutely amazing. So clear and crisp and colors are awesome making things look real. The sound is excellent. The colorful lights of the keyboard make for good aesthetics in the evening and are an aid if you are in a dim room. Games seem so much faster than on my regular PC. It is very quiet when it is on and even when the fan is going you can hardly hear it. A really nice feature that you don’t always find on a laptop is the rubber grips on the bottom. They secure the laptop from slipping off of just about any surface. The one downfall for me is that it doesn’t have a DVD player/writer, but for under $50 I was able to find an external one at Best Buy that is compatible with it and works great. I am not taking off a star because I just absolutely love this computer and highly recommend it.
