    IMPRESSIVE ACER LAPTOP!

Right out of the box, I was impressed with the Acer - Nitro 5 15.6" Laptop. Packaging was simple and complete. The initial setup was so easy a child could do it! There were very few "choices" that I had to make during setup, which is always appreciated! The system is very attractive with it's black case and red highlights. The graphics are crystal clear and amazing! I had to buy a Mouse since I really dislike "touchpads", but once attached, I had no problems with maneuvering around the keyboard and screen/apps. I was very impressed with the speed of the system .... refresh rate on graphics and jumping screen-to-screen was great! The system includes plenty of USB ports - which is sometimes lacking in other systems. I look forward to taking this system "on the road" to see how it performs in hotels, etc.

We purchased this for our 15 yr old grandson. 2 weeks into using it and it has froze up. We Did Troubleshooting with Acer and it needs to be returned for repair. I’m hoping it’s just a minor thing and will not be an ongoing problem of issue.

Acer - Nitro 5 Great Gaming Laptop for the price

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The Acer - Nitro 5 is a great entry level gaming laptop based on the specifications and the price. This laptop was on sale for $599 during Best Buy's Door Buster's sale leading up to the holiday. I was very impressed with the performance of this laptop right from unboxing it. The performance was great and the games that I played on it actually ran excellent with the graphic options set on high. I was also intrigued but also glad to see that this laptop was Intel Optane ready. I know in some of the questions that asked about this the response was no it is not compatible but that is incorrect. It says on the box that it is Optane ready and I have installed a 16 GB Intel Optane memory module in my laptop. I have also upgraded the hard drive to a WD Blue 3D NAND 1TB SATA SSD and the memory to 16GB Corsair Vengeance memory. I immediately noticed an increase in the boot time , application load time as well as the overall performance of the laptop. The display and viewing angles are excellent. I was concerned that there would be light bleed around the edges of the screen like the prior Dell gaming laptop that I had prior to getting this Acer but there was no bleed and the colors are vibrant and clear. The sound on this laptop was great as well I have not experienced any distorted or muffled sound at all. I am also impressed with the clarity and how loud the laptop speakers are I actually had to lower the volume on the laptop because of how strong the sound is. The Dolby software works excellent and the laptop sounds excellent through headphones as well. I notice that the fans kick in while gaming or during extensive activities but it is not loud and/or annoying. I also expect the fans to speed up to prevent the laptop from overheating. The included Nitro Sense software also allows you to enable cool boost which increases the maximum speed of the fans and it also allows you to change the fan speed controls to your liking. I am using the original 1TB hard drive as portable storage to hold back up files. Overall I am very impressed with this laptop and the upgrades that I made to the laptop makes it not only a great gaming powerhouse but it is great for everyday use and tasks as well. This was an exceptional value for the price and I would definitely recommend this laptop. I would also recommend using caution when reading through the reviews and answers to questions regarding this laptop as some people who respond have not used the laptop and are basing their answers off of speculation and not facts. I took a chance and purchased one of these to use it myself and to actually see how this laptop performs through actual use. I could not have been happier. This laptop was to replace a 17" Dell Gaming laptop that I had for about a year and a half. So far this Acer is a much better laptop and performs very well.

This is my first Windows 10 anyting, it's amazing how Cortana vocally walks me through opening setup it's even more amazing that Windows let me install a Windows Launcher on my phone that can ask my laptop with my phone. Oh yeah and it's a gaming laptop too. From my Origin account I installed Mass Effect 1 2 and 3 and I don't even remember that game looking at good but that game looks very good. This is definitely a good laptop to buy for gaming and who knew that's not the only thing you could do.

When looking at gaming laptops at this price point, you realize that sacrifices need to be made and corners need to be cut. Overall, this is a good machine that is capable of running games in all it's 1080p glory. The display itself isn't as high end as some others but again, it does the trick. It seems that colors are a bit washed out and dull. The overall build quality is decent: brushed aluminum with plastic everywhere else. The I/O is good enough, has enough to connect external peripherals, usb c, SD card, and HDMI. All of these which are pretty important for gaming and being on the go. The front speakers are ok, loud enough but they are located on the front of the laptop which makes me think that gamers will stick with their gaming headsets. Battery life seems a bit on the low side when running tasks and doing some light gaming. Acer likes to load in a lot if its bloatware but that's easy to remove. Overall, this laptop is on the beefier side but for all the multi tasking and mid range gaming that you can do, it is definitely worth considering.

Disclaimer: I received this item for free in exchange for my honest opinion on the item. First and foremost: I am not a heavy gamer. I play Sims 4, but beyond that, I don't do a lot of graphic-heavy games. That being said, the graphics on Sims 4 are better on this computer than any other computer I've played it on, and I didn't have any problems with speed in loading the game or playing it. My usual computer is a small Dell touch screen, so the first time I used this computer, I was overwhelmed by the size and weight of the computer - it is several inches bigger than my tiny Dell, and probably weighs 3x as much. This is definitely a solid laptop! My BIGGEST complaint about this computer is that while doing pretty much anything beyond word processing, the computer gets really, really hot, which is concerning since it is supposed to be a gaming computer! TL;DR? Great for basic gaming, not sure I would recommend for heavy gamers.

The Acer-Nitro 5 15.6 Laptop – Intel Core i5 – 8GBMemory – NVIDIA GeForceGTX 1050 – 1 TB Hard Drive is impressive right out of the box. The heaviness of the laptop and the craftsmanship is top of the line. Once I powered it on, it walked me through all the necessary steps to get it up and running. It has Cortana to use as my personal assistant or I can do all actions on my own.The android side of the Acer-Nitro 5 15.6 Laptop – Intel Core i5 – 8GBMemory – NVIDIA GeForceGTX 1050 – 1 TB Hard Drive operates as a high performance tablet. Playing games with the android function is synonymous with playing games on a video gaming console. The performance, graphics and processing time of commands looks the same as playing on an Xbox. I cannot jail break the security to allow installation of third party apps, but it does allow for side loading which I do not know how to perform. For me, I can only install apps from the Microsoft Store that does not offer enough free dynamic apps as third party sources offer. The Acer-Nitro 5 15.6 Laptop – Intel Core i5 – 8GBMemory – NVIDIA GeForceGTX 1050 – 1 TB Hard Drive is a powerful hybrid laptop and tablet device.

The 2018 Acer Nitro 5 notebook delivers a lot of bang for the buck. It has a nice stylish appearance without screaming gaming so it is something you could take to a meeting and not feel embarrassed to pull out. That said it is fairly heavy at nearly 6lbs, but it is thankfully slim at just under an one inch. It also comes with a 130w charging brick which is relatively compact for its rating. There is no mistaking this machine for a thin & light notebook, but few thin & lights come with a GTX1050 and none of them come at this price. So lets get down to brass tax. Here are my various thoughts on the Nitro 5 (2018): - The Core i5-8300H is a fast quad core processor that provides nearly last year's i7 performance for less. - The 15.6" display has an adequate 1920x1080 resolution with reasonable off-axis performance and acceptable color. There is no mistaking this for a true IPS display. I would hazard a guess at a mid-level AHVA panel. The display does display noticeable color shift off-axis. - The display also comes with some VERY sizable bezels (>1") for this day and age, but given this is a notebook aimed at gamers most probably won't care. - Display hinge is solid and seems well constructed. Only time will tell as to just how durable it really is. - The GTX 1050 comes with 4GB of dedicated RAM. While I wouldn't expect miracles from this GPU it does perform very respectably in the two test cases I threw at it. Assassin's Creed Origins was able to maintain >30 FPS at 1080P with medium settings and dynamic scaling enabled. Far Cry 5 also maintained >30 FPS at High settings at 1080P. Both were surprising results really and certainly offer a very playable experience on modern games. Well beyond what would be capable with the integrated Intel graphics alone. - The notebook gets relatively loud when playing a game. The notebook is equipped with dual fans for cooling and as such headphones or external speakers may want to be used to drown out the whirl. - Keyboard is backlit in red and is defeatable. A tad spongy for my taste and the keys themselves don't rise above the deck quite as much as I would prefer, but it is certainly acceptable for daily use. This is an area where everyone will have their own taste. - Trackpad is responsive and accurate. Nice size as well. - Speakers are decent. Nice balanced sound, but you won't be throwing a house party with them. - Intel WiFi and Bluetooth performance are pretty standard. Nothing to see here. - Does come equipped with a gigabit ethernet jack. A nice to have even today. I have found myself in more than a few situations where not having ethernet put me in a real bind. - Battery life isn't great. I suppose this should be expected as most gaming centric laptops don't fare well in this department, but Acer really undersized the battery so expect 3-4 hours max of light-duty use (web browsing, Excel, etc.). If gaming expect to stay plugged in. Several of Acer's competitors are offering similar notebooks with larger batteries. - The notebook does have user accessible compartments to allow for replacement/upgrade of both RAM and the hard drive. - The notebook also has an M.2 slot, but this is not easily accessible like the hard drive and RAM. I pulled the entire bottom off the notebook to find the M.2 slot. I cannot verify if it is a x2 or x4 slot either. The machine does seem to be equipped for an Optane cache, but I am not sure as to what nVME capabilites may exist. I suggest one proceeds with caution when making that upgrade. - The ability to upgrade is a huge plus (and fairly common on most gaming notebooks) as the equipped hard drive is SLOW. It is without a doubt the Achilles's heel of the machine. At a minimum, Acer should have equipped the notebook with an Optane cache drive to help alleviate the pain. While I always appreciate space, I appreciate speed more and replacing the conventional hard drive with an SSD would be the very first thing I would consider. It will transform the day-to-day experience of using the machine. - Machine doesn't come overloaded with pre-installed software which is nice. Something I completely expected for a notebook at this price point. - Important note regarding the software drivers for the GTX 1050. The stock Nvidia drivers do not work. The drivers supplied by Acer are 4+ months out of date. While there are workarounds to this situation it is important to understand this restriction if you aren't very computer saavy. Overall, this is a nice 'gaming' notebook for the price it is designed to meet. Is it the fastest game in town? Of course not, but it is more than competent for the casual gamer. I replaced the hard drive with a Samsung 860 EVO and it is a completely different experience. I have passed the machine on to my 13 year old son who is using it as his primary computer now. For his use (surfing the web, playing Fortnite, Discord, etc.) it meets his needs exceptionally well.

And I could say best all around computer I have ever own. 5 stars for these machines runs games and video flawlessly still. I wonder when this thing if or will it ever poop out? Good Budget Gaming Laptop, Not Great

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I've been working on PC's for a lot of years, repairing them, building gaming rigs etc. I'm usually very weary about gaming laptops since so much can go wrong with one in such a small package, or design. But I've been using Acer products (mainly desktops) for 20 years, and they are super durable, and seem to last forever. Even the 9 and 8 year old laptops I still have, I don't use them much but they still work like a charm when turned on. In this laptop here are the pros and cons imo. Mine was a birthday gift, but I just didn't feel it was needed, being that I already own every gaming console, and a gaming PC i rarely used. But thought I would try this anyway. And with the 1050 for this price that's not to bad at all. Pros. - The 1050 is good, for basic 1080p gaming, which most still want. The TI is not a huge leap, but a little better I suppose. - Nice build, not overly gaudy or flashy - Very light for it's size, some complained about the build feeling plastic(y), but I thought it was just fine. - Keys lighting up red is a cool feature, though it can't be turned off. - Screen is decent, just bright enough. - Decent webcam Cons - This particular I5 is not the quicker of the bunch for sure, good for games, as long as they aren't super demanding. - Fan isn't overly loud, but still subtley annoying under heavy load. - Keyboard has a squishy feel, not very clicky, but still responsive. - Trackpad is good but not very accurate. - Games seem to play good for a while, but really start to lag after play for over 30 minutes or so. Not sure why this is, but it's the main reason I took it back. Even after updating the drivers. No sale. Other than that it's a great machine for the price you pay. No it's not going to win any awards for originality in the looks department or run games at the highest framerates or resolutions. But it is what it is, a good, competent gaming laptop for those who want to play "some" modern games on the go. I still LOVE Acer, but I'm just really not a mobile gamer anymore. But I would recommend it to people who are.
