Great machine for around $800 for almost a year. Unfortunately, it started to have freezing issues after 6-8months. Now at 9months I have a "No Bootable Device" error and I'm looking at $200 repair or new machine.

    More than just "mid-range"

By price point and description, this is considered a mid-range gaming laptop. But the more I use it, the smaller the gap becomes between this and my higher end system. On initial set-up, I was disappointed in the screen performance with certain textures, but Windows popped up and offered to run a process to decrease blurriness. Once I ran that, it was sharp as ever. Build is solid and the accents are a nice touch. My wife really likes the keyboard "flare," which she never notices. Kudos on the design and build. On that same note, the keys are very responsive and quite comfortable. I ran a few games at near-maxed levels and never noticed any frame rate drops. Even with the constant explosions of GTAV, textures stay sharp, shadows showed up and motion remained smooth. During my sessions, I rested my wrist right on the panel below the keyboard to see if the panel became uncomfortably warm during play. It did not! Stayed cool, and having the fans set to auto, they kicked on and off without a hitch when the temperature stated to rise. Which wasn't too bad at all. The Nitro controls work well when tinkering with the system specs. The i5 ran smoothly as expected. My negatives have more to do with Windows than with the system. For some reason, I had a tough time installing software. Ah well, little extra work was not a problem. If you're sitting on the fence, go ahead and jump, you won't regret it. Great product.

After 4 years of Gaming - Good for the Money

The Acer Nitro 5 15.6" Gaming Laptop offers a solid balance of performance and affordability for gamers on a budget. Featuring an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of memory, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 graphics card, and a 256GB solid-state drive, this laptop handles most modern games and everyday computing tasks with ease. Performance: The Intel Core i5 processor, combined with 8GB of RAM, provides a smooth and responsive experience for both gaming and multitasking. While the GTX 1050 isn't the latest in NVIDIA's lineup, it still performs well for 1080p gaming, allowing you to enjoy popular titles at medium to high settings. Design: The Nitro 5 sports a sleek black design with red accents, giving it a stylish and aggressive look. The build quality feels robust, and the keyboard is comfortable for long gaming sessions, featuring backlighting that adds a nice touch for nighttime use.Display: The 15.6" Full HD display delivers vibrant colors and sharp images. It's perfect for gaming and watching movies, although the viewing angles are somewhat limited, which is a minor drawback. Storage: The 256GB SSD ensures fast boot times and quick loading of games and applications. However, storage might feel a bit limited if you plan to install a large number of games or store extensive media files. Adding an external drive or upgrading the internal storage could be necessary for some users. Connectivity: The laptop includes a good selection of ports, including USB 3.1, HDMI, and an Ethernet port, which is essential for stable online gaming. The Wi-Fi performance is also reliable, maintaining a strong connection even during intensive online sessions.Battery Life: Battery life is average for a gaming laptop, lasting around 4-5 hours under normal usage. During gaming, expect it to drop significantly, so having the charger handy is a must for extended play sessions. Conclusion: Overall, the Acer Nitro 5 15.6" Gaming Laptop is an excellent choice for gamers looking for a budget-friendly option that doesn't compromise on performance. While it may not be the most powerful gaming laptop on the market, it offers great value for its price, making it a worthy contender for anyone looking to enjoy gaming on the go.

    Low cost future proof laptop

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

so...my HD(Hard drive) on pc died and transferring data from old HD was going to take about three days. I needed new machine right away and started looking for something portable, low cost with performance and upgradable for future. My pc was i3 with 16 gb ram, so I was also looking to upgrade. After looking at all the options in i3, i5 and i7, I narrowed down my search to this laptop. It is i5 9th generation, so it is latest and from what I have seen in past two weeks, zippy with 2.4 gigahertz base speed. It has 8gb ram that can be upgraded to 32gb (on my future list), so I'll be able to increase the power as I install more software that I need. It has nvidia 1050 with 3gb of dedicated memory, so it is good enough for games but also can deal with more serious graphic applications. It comes with 256 gb of m2 ssd, which is fine but they also give you adapter cable, so you can upgrade it to larger ssd if you want in the future (also on my list). It has one usb 2 and 2 usb 3 ports as well as 1 usb type c port (for next generation of usb). Yeah, it does not have card reader. But I have couple of usb card readers that dime a dozen now days. It has app to control fan speed based on temp (which I don't touch and left it on auto as so far it has not run hot) and is quiet. I do like the feature that it allows me to adjust the light intensity on backlit keyboard and keyboard comes with lot of shortcut keys and full numeric keyboard. So, I figured with such features and price of $679 or even below 750(same features with higher memory were listed for about 1200), it would be a steal (even though it seems a bit too much of a gamer type laptop) and I haven't regretted my decision.

Bought this 4 years go and still one of the best laptops I’ve ever purchased still runs phenomenally, even with my 8 year old using it for games and school websites we haven’t had a single problem with it besides needing to buy an external hard drive which we expected anyways. It’s definitely a laptop I always recommend for both price wise and functionality.

In my opinion, you won't find a better entry level gaming laptop for this price. The15.6" HD screen with 1080 x1920 resolution is just the right size without being to large to carry around comfortably. Also, the screen is great for just streaming movies when your hands are too cramped from hours of gaming. It comes with an Intel® Core™ i5-8300H mobile processor. You get a 256 SSD and room to add another drive. You get 8 GB RAM expandable to 32 GB. (ram is cheap. Wait for a sale and boost this baby up.) You get an awesome Nvidia GTX 1050Ti graphics card. You get dual stereo speakers and Dolby Audio Premium. You get a FULL SIZE backlit keyboard including a number pad. You get an HD webcam with 2 microphones. This unit has plenty of other good stuff like 3 USB ports plus a USB-c port, HDMI output, and an SD card reader. I am not a heavy PC gamer, but I DO love my games and I come from years of console gaming, which means I just expect everything to work. I have to say "just work" is exactly what this little baby does. It's fast, really fast. I'm very happy to play a tabletop simulator and I can play that on pretty much anything. But now I can play Call of Duty or any other FPS I want to play. Honestly though, I'll be sticking to Fallout, Skyrim and Elder Scrolls online. And they run, and look fantastic. The display is just gorgeous and many newer games really take advantage of that. I'm sorry I can't give you speeds and benchmarks and all that. I'm sure there are plenty of other reviews that will have that info for you. I did, however, look into a few common complaints and the solutions to those complaints. PROBLEM; UNEXPLAINED LAG>>>WTF! SOLUTION; This unit comes with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti but also an Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630. The Nvidia one is much better and pretty much the greatest thing about this laptop, but some machines (read most) will use the intel one as default. Disable the Intel GPU in device manager under display adapters and performance will be much better. PROBLEM; It runs hot. After an hour or so of gaming some people experience CPU and GPU thermal throttling and a drop in framerate. SOLUTION; You can easily remove a small back panel and the heatsink. After you clean off the old (read CHEAP) thermal paste, you apply a better one. The new paste is pretty inexpensive. This seems to greatly improve the machines performance but, it will also void your warranty. If you want to do this, you can google or check you tube for a tutorial. I also want to share this one piece of information because I've encountered it so many times since I got this laptop. I don't know the first thing about undervolting but, many people have said if you are gaming, just undervolting and putting the fans on max, will make it run at ~70° while playing for hours. Again, if this is something that appeals to you, I suggest googling the details. Overall I think this is an awesome laptop, at a very reasonable price. I was going to give it to my nephew but, I think I'm keeping it.

Nitro 5 2019 Review Cons: Lost the SD card slot Lost the easily accessible hatch for the 2.5” hard drive & RAM Number pad feels cramped Plug is really hard to plug in for some reason. Pros: Has extra m.2 SSD slot and still has 2.5” drive bay (but they’re both hard to get to) Laptop is thinner and lighter (while maintaining the same screen size) Battery life seems to be better than previous version Runs quite fast Meh: Battery life is still only 2-4 hours depending on workload. The 2019 version of the Acer Nitro 5 is a solid update to a great product line. The laptop continues the Nitro line’s signature red and black aesthetic. The laptop is angular, but not absurdly so. The red accents and thicker profile would probably stand out a little in a business meeting, but the large black surfaces and overall clean look prevent this laptop from just screaming “GAMER.” The laptop is slimmer than last year’s model, but it keeps the same screen size. The screen has adequate viewing angles, adequate sharpness, and adequate brightness. It’s not the greatest thing I’ve ever seen, but it’s far from the worst I’ve ever seen. The laptop runs quite well. I had issues with an earlier version of this laptop freezing up with a black screen at boot and periodically bogging down while downloading drivers. So far, this laptop hasn’t experienced any of those issues. It runs smoothly, and updates have run quietly in the background without issue. The included SSD is relatively small, but it’s large enough to handle three of my favorite games and a handful of productivity programs. I can rely on external storage for the rest of my games library. My biggest complaint about this laptop would be the upgradeability. Last year’s model had easy access hatches for accessing the 2.5” hard drive and the RAM. The SSD was hidden away underneath the back panel and required removing a bunch of screws and prying away plastic clips (I ALWAYS gouge my device rather badly when doing this). This year’s model did away with the easy access hatches, and the 2.5” hard drive cable is included in a separate box within the package (and is almost guaranteed to get lost at some point). They did put in a second m.2 slot, but I’m not loving the fact that I’ll have to risk gouging my laptop to upgrade any of this. I’m thinking it might be worth paying a professional to install a 2.5” hard drive for me to keep my laptop looking nice. Side note: The hard drive cable comes with a note saying that having a non-Acer certified technician install the hard drive will void your warranty. It then directs you to a website for more info. If this is going to be your primary gaming machine, then you may want to go ahead and invest in a 1-2 TB drive to supplment the included SSD. The plug is really REALLY hard to plug in for some reason. It could just be my particular unit, but if the plug isn’t lined up at just the right angle, then the plug won’t go in. Once in, it’s nice and snug and charges just fine; but it’s really annoying. The keyboard is comfortable to type on. It is backlit with a nice red glow. The numberpad is cramped, and the numberlock key is over the 8 instead of the 7 to make room for a dedicated “Nitro” button. This button launches “Nitrosense.” “Nitrosense” is a program that comes preinstalled on this laptop that allows you to monitor CPU and GPU temps and control fan speed. I’ve only had to use it once when my laptop was starting to thermal throttle on some seriously intense video transcoding. Maxing out the fans caused my CPU temperatures to drop between 2-5 degrees. Overall, I’m very happy with this laptop. It’s not the most powerful gaming machine on the market, but it’s a good solid option for gamers on a budget. While the upgradeability may be obnoxiously difficult, I like the fact that the storage and RAM even can be upgraded in this age of soldered components. I would recommend this laptop.

The Acer Nitro 5 Laptop is awesome. Lightweight durable chassis, plenty of connection ports and high speed performance eloquently packaged together with an amazingly clear screen makes the Acer 5 15.6" laptop an excellent choice for those seeking a quality laptop capable of keeping up with the most demanding applications and games. This machine can handle anything you run on it. While the 256GB SSD hard drive performs well, it may be a little low on capacity if you like to store data locally on the machine. However, an external drive can help with that problem. Overall the Acer Nitro 5 is an amazing laptop and I recommend it to anyone looking for a machine capable of delivering astonishing graphics and stellar performance.

Used it during college. I'm a CS major. Good processing, especially for the time when I first got it. But heavy and battery life is not what it promises. By the end the plastic near the screen hinge was cracking, but it did endure a lot. Still works and have it plugged in to a monitor as home as a secondary device, used mostly by my parents now.

Despite the gaming moniker, the laptop (when closed) still can pass as a utility laptop which is important because I don't want my coworkers looking at me funny. That being said, when it's play time, it easily runs the Witcher 3 on max settings with only slight lag with multiple people on screen. Overwatch runs great and looks great as well. Can use the installed app to set your GPU to auto adjust, stay max performance, or conserve, and the app is easy to access. Keyboard isn't as comfy as a 17 incher, but that's to be expected given the smaller real estate. The number pad is still plenty usable, and the travel on the keys are responsive.

    Acer Nitro 5 laptop

The Acer Nitro laptop is not like alot of the other laptops. What do I mean? Well for one if you care about look, this one is sharp, has dark red hightlights along with the black finish. I personally think it looks pretty awesome. Now some of the positives: You will not realize how valuable the red backlighting on the keys until you start using a laptop that has it. When you press a key on this laptop right away the key caps light up and you can see what you are typing, very useful especially in low lighting. Also you can set how long you want the keys to stay lit up. Nvidia Geforce GTX is great, just obviously do not go in thinking that this is gonna replace your desktop. Will it play your steam games? absolutely, I have some games that take lots of processor power (Football manager 2019) along with graphical games that are FPS, or single player and all play very very well on this laptop. Actually very surprised how well since I haven't used a laptop for quite some time. Windows 10 is so cool, it I have it automatically syncing between my laptop and desktop so when I log into chrome browser at work its like I never left my house. The processor on my Nitro is a 2.40GHz and it is very responsive and works great, especially coupled with the SSD drive which is nowadays a must if you dont like wasting time. Battery, works very well and lasts a very long time. It will range obviously, if you are just using it for internet access or word processing this thing will last 10+ hours, if your playing games for me I notice 4 hours sometimes or a little more but I cant give any proper estimates because I usually play games with power supply plugged in. Screen is very nice at Full HD 1080 that you will especially appreciate with many games. And finally going back to the body of the laptop I really like the vents and way this laptop is situated, has some really need design in the back with vent that goes across almost completely and also some vents on the bottom in case you get a laptop cooling pad. This that can be improved? Well its heavy, not crazy heavy but if you have it on your lap you will feel it and also feel the heat after a few hours of gaming. Sound is about what you would expect. I personally like using headphones for some gaming. Overall I love it, it helps me play some of my cloud saves on steam at work for games like No Man Sky, or FM2019 etc. If your a gamer you will enjoy it.

    Great basic gaming laptop

I'm a fan of this laptop for what it is, a basic laptop with gamer friendly enhancements and styling. I, myself, am a entry level gamer, and found this fit my needs. In the box is the laptop, power adapter, laptop sleeve, and an upgrade kit for HDD. It comes loaded with Win10 which walks through the normal Windows based setup process. Overall this took ~10 minutes to get through and move on to being able to use the laptop. The laptop includes 3 x USB ports, 1 x HDMI, 1 x USB-C and a headphone jack, note that there is 1 x USB 2.0 and 2 x USB 3.0, this is something to keep in mind when selecting what you plug in to which ports. I have used this laptop only on wifi, but there is an ethernet port for those who need it. This laptop feels sturdy without being bulky. Weighing in at 5 lbs and just over 1" thick, I find it easy to carry with me, and the beveled corners means that I don't continuously get it stuck taking it in and out of cases and backpacks. This is a win for the design team! The overall look screams "gamer" with a backlit keyboard in red, and red accents on the frame and keys. In the first month of use, the battery lasts over the 7 hours when I'm surfing, but I haven't tested battery length for continuous gaming. Overall this laptop performs as expected. Speakers are average and when the fan kicks on "jet engine" level, it can overpower the speakers. I recommend a headset to fix this issue, and when using a quality headset, I didn't find this to be a concern. The processor is solid and will hang in there for moderate 3D gaming or multitasking. For daily surfing and office tasks, the processor outperformed my expectations. Even when working with large data sets, the processor was surprisingly quick to respond. Unfortunately while the processor can support it, the graphics struggle to keep up with anything other than basic games. I observed stutter when playing Fortnite, but after tweaking the settings was able to reduce fps to get a smoother experience. There is a "Nitro" button, which when selected launches Nitrosense, allowing for fan control, power schemes, and CPU/GPU monitoring, adding to the gamer appeal. Overall, if you want a laptop that will get you to gamer status and can hang in there for the majority of the games on the market, this laptop will do the job. You may have to compromise on your graphics expectations, but for this price point, that's a fair trade off.

Set up was easy and able to do within ten minutes. The keyboard has a great feel to it and pressing down the keys to type feels nice for someone not used to a standard mechanical keyboard. Everything is snappy from pulling up your browser of choice to the initial boot. It has no problems playing my favorite modern games such as Ark: Survival Evolved and Monster Hunter World, and does fine with resource extensive older games. Overall a great laptop for gaming.

This is my first gaming laptop and, so far, I'm very pleased with it. It's definitely a machine of compromises, though. I believe Acer is trying to keep the cost down, yet still provide gaming performance that's better than the usual laptop, and keep it all in a package that's reasonably portable. If you understand these trade-offs, I think you'll be happy with it. The screen has 1080 resolution (so not 4K) with a matte finish. At first the finish took some getting used to, but I like not having the reflection glare you get with other screens and yet videos and games still look just fine on it. It's also not a touch screen when it seems like most screens these days are, so be aware of that. Probably the biggest limitation/compromise is the 256GB SSD in it. The SSD is blazing fast, but 256GB is very small and will fill up quickly. Fortunately, there are expansion options, so for some extra money down the road you can get a larger, second drive installed if you find you need the space. I was impressed with all the available USB ports on it, including a wired Ethernet port which is somewhat rare in laptops these days. It's nice having that as an option and not having to worry about carrying around a USB-to-Ethernet dongle (and using up one of your available USB ports). The graphics card is a bit on the skimpy side for performance, but it works just fine for light gaming or older games, which I like to play anyway. Again, I'm sure this was one of the design choices to keep the price down and I'm perfectly happy with it. All things considered, this is a nice laptop for the price. My wife doesn't play computer games, but I have a feeling she might commandeer this from me occasionally just because she likes how it looks with the red back-lit keyboard and because it has a nice, big display. So, just like its compromise design, I'll have to compromise on when I get to use it.

This is what I was looking for, I’m new into PC gaming and was looking for the perfect gaming laptop… this seems to fit the bill. Webcam: Like every other laptop webcam I’ve ever used, noisy, grainy, not special, but gets it done. Audio: Speakers are so-so… again, nothing spectacular… However, I mostly wear headphones so this doesn’t impact me at all. I do wish laptops would use higher quality speakers in their builds, but it’s not an issue for me especially at the price point. Connectivity is fast! Both Wi-Fi and USBs have been great and zippy thanks to 5GHz/2.4GHz MU-MIMO. This is the standard that should be on all current models. Dedicated nitro boost button is cool, but not necessary… almost seems gimmicky to have that kind of quick adjust option available? I've accidentally hit the button a few times when I didn't mean to. Battery life was good! I was impressed with getting ~3 hours or so of play time straight through with the 4 cell battery, could it have a 6 cell battery? Yes, but at this price point this laptop is at the 4 cell is fine… We all know laptop batteries have issues, so I was pretty happy getting that much play time without issue. I haven’t drained the battery with web browsing/daily tasks yet, but have used it for a few house and still had ample battery power left. I would definitely recommend this to anyone getting into PC gaming or anyone looking for a dedicated gaming laptop. I'm very happy with it.

I would recommend this to a friend
