Got this at the end year last year. It’s still a great machine plays all the latest games at high frame rate. Con: it’s loud. Even at gaming lap top standards

Great for Windows, bad for Linux, ugly UEFI

I am an embedded Linux software engineer for 10+ years, but primarily use Windows as a desktop interface and enjoy gaming on Steam there as well. I also have experience with Linux and Windows system administration, with my own homelab. Short TLDR: Excellent if you only use Windows esp. for price/performance. Don't consider if you want to dual-boot Linux due to Acer's amateur-hour standards-breaking BIOS/UEFI implementation. # Pros I returned an Alienware m15 R5 and got this Acer Predator Helios PH315-55-795C instead. The primary reason I returned the Alienware was the abysmal thermal performance and the fans that screeched at you. This Acer does not do that, and is immediately better because of it. You can actually run performant applications on it, and while the fans will still ramp up, they make a softer noise that you can tune out. A+ I am using this with a fresh Windows 11 Pro install (req'd for Intel Alder Lake, it's whatever, but AutoHDR is nice too). I have no complaints here. I get great frame rates in games, including when I plug the HDMI into my LG C1 for 4K HDR games. The 3070 Ti mobile makes short work of it. I have my rating set to 4 stars since my intended usage for this machine was to be primarily in Windows. For that task, this machine is good. # Cons I require Secure Boot and full disk encryption for what I do. This includes BitLocker on Windows, but also LUKS on Linux. I installed a separate M2 drive in this machine that I had intended to install OpenSUSE on. Acer, why are you not following UEFI standards? I should be able to keep Secure Boot enabled, install Linux on a secondary drive (without affecting the Windows one), and then simply use the F12 boot menu to switch between them on boot. I was able to do this on the Alienware in the short time I had it, and it worked just fine. (Again, I have been a sysadmin for over 10 years, I know what I'm doing.) Acer's UEFI/BIOS is absolute garbage. You cannot register MOK keys. They have this asinine system where you have to whitelist individual EFI files, but then limit you to 5 with no way to delete them?! This doesn't work, especially since these get updated when the kernel updates (since that's how Secure Boot works!) When you finally coax the system to boot into Linux, the standard 'efibootmgr' tool DOES NOT WORK. There is NO REASON for this Acer! Follow standards! They are there for a reason. For any other laptop I have owned (including other Dells, Lenovos), this has never been an issue and I have never been this frustrated with simply trying to dual-boot before. I gave up and removed the second M2 drive. I don't really need to dual-boot Linux, and I'll just end up using WSL on Windows, it's... fine. But seriously if Linux is a requirement for you (and you care about security on a portable machine), then do not buy Acer products.

Love this pc, it runs anything and everything very smoothly. My only complaint is the battery life is super short, an hour or so unplugged while gaming. It also slows down performance when almost out of battery.

I haven't actually even tried gaming on this machine yet, but it seems like a very fast machine compared to what I've used in the past. The way the keyboard lights up is a nice touch, a little bonus, and customizable.

This laptop has the specs that will keep you gaming for a while. As spec’d the laptop will run games at 160 fps with no worry. The expandability will allow for adding additional storage and ram when the time comes.

    Loud but powerful laptop

I picked this laptop during the president day sale paying just over 1600 after taxes. Overall quite pleased with the performance. It’s a powerful laptop being able to keep up with the higher end laptops which are set about 1000- 2000 more than then what I paid. It’s has a turbo button that kicks up the gpu performance to max while still keeping the laptop cool. Can easily power through all your HD gaming needs for max quality without dropping a frame. Only down size is the fan noise that sounds like a jet taking off a runaway which can be quite annoying. Would recommending using a head set while using the turbo mode for those more demanding games. Other than the fan noise this model is major improvement from its predecessor.

Great laptop. Runs most games on ultra settings no problem. Runs hot too like most gaming laptops, but the turbo cools it down really well. A little loud but no big deal for me.

great laptop, built like a tank. for this price range its much more robust than the others. Touch pad could be better as it bounces if you tap it quick & it needs a battery limiter. At this price there should be zero overcharging issue. other than that this laptop is a great buy. compare to others & see it in person at the store. You wont be dissapointed.
