Good laptop... Until you own it.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When my old Chromebook got junked out from Geek Squad, I went hunting for another one for school. I looked at many different ones but decided to settle on the Acer Chromebook Spin 15, since my last one was from the same brand. I was in love for the first few months due to the Chromebooks forward facing speakers, which still sound amazing, and the backlit keyboard, which is very intelligent. When viewing a show fullscreen on Netflix, YouTube, or Hulu, the keyboard goes away quicker than when not in fullscreen or when a non-entertainment app like Netflix. I also loved the big screen due to how big it was at 15.6' and being FHD, and USB-C charging ports, which are on different sides of the Chromebook to make charging super easy on any side. However, when the honeymoon faze ended, I quickly realized the mistake I had made with trusting Acer with my money, again. The screen has constantly flashed black and purple bars at random times repeatedly, which has not stopped for the past 4 months. Also, the screen has gone white and just stopped working for a whole day, until it just powered back on as nothing happened. It also has just froze while completing normal tasks like going through mail and YouTube. There are also cosmetic problems with the laptop, which include the thick bezels bordering the screen, which make the laptop look extremely outdated, especially in the days of bezel-less TVs, laptops, and phones. The display itself has also let me down with crazy amounts of light bleed. Overall, this is a feature-rich laptop with solid value for the money, but sometimes paying more gets you a better laptop, and I would have spent more if I had known the problems that would lie ahead with this laptop.

Would make a great gift
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When I first took the Acer Spin 15 out of its protective packing sleeve, my first thought was, “Wow, this is gorgeous!” After firing it up and taking it for a test drive, it proved to have brains along with the beauty! This new model CP315-1H-P8QY is a big step forward for Acer Chromebooks. It has the power and features of many quality full-size laptops, and at a very affordable price. Two of my favorite included features are: the responsive 15.6” full HD LED backlight touch screen, with great color and clarity, and the backlit keyboard. If this were a full-size, the only thing missing would be the numeric keypad, which is not even always on full-size these days. Other key features that make the gorgeous Spin 15 a real buy are: *4GB of RAM, 32GB hard drive, and Intel processing, providing power and speed. *Quick conversion to tablet or tent mode, which comes in handy for presentations and/or video conferences using the built-in webcam and mic. *Ease of carry and use due to weight of less than 5 lbs. and height of less than 1”. *Intel-N wireless connectivity, a real plus. *Chrome OS with built in antivirus, including automatic updates to save time and worry. *And more! Acer already built very good Chromebooks (and laptops), but they have now surpassed themselves. This machine is a winner for the business person, student, or anyone else, and it can be had at an affordable price. As we are nearing the holiday season, it would make a very nice gift for someone special on your list.

Almost a real laptop
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I received this Acer Chromebook at no cost for an honest review. I own another 11 inch Acer Chromebook so I am familiar with the Chrome OS layout and I do enjoy Google's system and ease of use. Great things: -Backlit keyboard -Touchscreen (you can also pinch-zoom using touchpad, as well as 2 finger scroll) -Multitouch dynamic touchpad -Screen folds back to serve as tablet -Great stereo speakers & crisp sound! -Battery life is amazing -USB-C on both sides so you can charge the Chromebook by plugging the adapter on either side -Elegant color -webcam (built-in) The O.K. -wide bezel (almost an inch on each side of the screen) which just takes up size but has no real use IMO -speakers only face up (a la laptop style) so using as tablet, sound is not great since speakers face down -22gig usable space (32gig total) -a bit choppy on some websites. -I could see the backlight corner spots on dark movie scenes. I must emphasize that it really shines on battery duration, it's rated for 12 hours and I played online games on it for 7 hrs (with breaks in between) and browsed and it was going strong, so I was impressed with that. I am impressed overall and I believe it's a great improvement over previous versions.

Durable laptop, great for on-the-go
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really like this laptop. It feels much more robust than other Chromebook options I've tested. I was skeptical, but it has won me over. The 15" touchscreen is big, beautiful, and colorful, with full rotating capabilities to put this thing in all kinds of viewing positions, from standard desk laptop to bedside tablet. The machine powers on very quickly, and setup was fast and simple using my Google account - it took only minutes to get from unboxing to up-and-running. Everything you need to work on the go is available using the easily accessible Google apps, and the laptop lets you switch to entertainment just as quickly with pre-loaded video apps and surprisingly impressive video and sound quality. The laptop is built for a person on the move - it does feel a little heavy, but I won't complain as the outer shell feels like it could withstand the bumps, spills, and overall carnage of daily life. And forget about worrying about coffee shop power outlets: this thing boasts a 13-hour battery life, and I was pushing that limit very often without worrying about a recharge. Last but not least, I really like the sturdy, textured outer casing juxtaposed with the metallic, backlit keyboard. It truly is a good-looking machine and really highlights how far the Chromebook lines have come. The laptop does not have an optical drive, and with its smaller hard drive, it is expected that the user will utilize the cloud capabilities or external options. These things don't take away any of the appeal of this wonderful machine. If you're looking for a true portable desktop and enjoy the Chrome and Google experience, this is the laptop for you. Full disclosure, I was given this product for my honest, unbiased review.

Nice!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I like this laptop. It is a perfect laptop for teenagers. It’s affordable, has just enough bells and whistles to make it a competitor. I like it for my teenage boys so they can use it for projects, online class work without having to use the main computer. It’s lightweight, stylish looking and the battery lasts. I love that you can use it as laptop or tablet I also like that the charger is USB C. Definitely needs more storage to be able to be a main laptop, but for teens even off to college first year this is a good buy.

Extremely Solid Purchase! Very Happy!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is absolutely perfect for our 14 year old to do her homework on, steram videos, write emails, Google classroom, or video conference with Zoom. We are so happy we bought this device for her! It really is one of the best bargains out there for Chromebooks, especially if you want one with a larger screen! The Google Play Store is great to have. Lighted Keyboard is a nice touch. Huge HD screen (1920x1080) for a Chromebook which is nice. USB-C (3.1) connectivity and charging, wonderful. The flip capability is nice to have, even though a device this large is sort of clunky to flip. WIFI is Wireless AC, so you can take advantage of modern router speeds. 13 hours of battery time! Even the construction is good. Seemingly a mix of plastic and aluminum, which feels somewhat premium compared to other similar Chromebooks. Also, the nice gorilla glass display! Durable and good looking, gorilla glass is usually only on the high-end devices! Hardly any negatives, but if I had to pick some: The display is a tad bit dim and "meh", but not any worse than the other comparable Chromebooks. I mean if you are looking for premium video, this is not the way you want to go, but it isn't horrible either. Especially when using an external monitor, which we do. That brings up the other negative. There is no HDMI port, so you need to buy a separate adapter to attach a monitor. Such as the Startech CDP2HD, which costs about $25.00. But the graphics through the monitor are really not bad at all for this class of device. So in conclusion, this is one of the best technology investments we have made in a long time! If you are looking for a Chromebook for your gradeschool-age child or perhaps just something to watch Netflix, pay bills, browse the net, and send emails...this is such a great device for this! Seriously, what a total bargain! You won't be sorry.

Decent Hardware, Software is a Disjointed Mess
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As far as budget laptops go, this Chromebook hardward is fairly decent. The specs are pretty budget but, you really don't need much to run ChromeOS. The laptop handles ChromeOS well enough. If you are looking for a flawless experience, this is not the laptop. But, if you want a cheap laptop that will let you browse the web, this one will work. As far as the screen goes it looks pretty good. It gets plenty bright and is pretty clear. My biggest complaint is the massive bezels on the screen. They are the biggest I've seen and really make this laptop look way bulkier than it should be. The touchscreen works decently, I've notice I have to tap things more than once often. I'm not sure if that is due to a cheap touchscreen or ChromeOS not being optimized for touch. This keyboard on the other hand, is bad. The key travel is not good and overall a very mushy and unsatisfying experience. The pretty terrible ChromeOS keyboard layout doesn't help either. I'm not sure why the decision was made to replace the caps lock key with a search button. It doesn't seem like a useful place for this. More than once I have hit this key on accident and brought up the search menu, which is really annoying when trying to type. You can remap the key to caps lock but, it's very confusing to do and I doubt many people will know how to do this. I think a much better option would have been to include a caps lock key and move the search key to the bottom left of the keyboard where the Windows key is on a normal laptop. Battery life is pretty good really, I get a solid 8-9 hours on this laptop, which I find to be really good for browsing and watching videos. The real problem of this laptop is ChromeOS. I think the OS has a ton of potential but, it very much still feels like an unfinished product. The idea of being able to run full desktop style Chrome along with Android apps should be enough for most people. But, the problem is the execution. ChromeOS and Android Apps seem like they are two completely different operating systems crammed together. You end up with duplicate Chrome and Android apps that do similar things but, neither give you everything you want. It's impossible to tell on some apps whether they are Chrome apps or android apps, and the settings menu or should I say menus is the craziest thing I've ever seen. There are two entirely different settings menus for ChromeOS and Android apps, which makes navigating your settings the most frustrating thing on the planet. Overall, I can't say I could recommend this laptop or any other ChromeOS laptop until they polish out the operating system, I think you'll be frustrated at some point or another with this laptop.

The Best Chrome Book For The Money!!!!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this chrome book for my daughter and it does everything that was expected and more. I wanted to wait to write this review just to make sure that there were no problems like I read in the other ones. So far no problems and actually my daughter loves it. There are also other neat features that come with this chromebook that are great for doing research and book reports. So I give it two thumbs up and 5 stars!!!

You are buying a prototype operating system
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Be aware of what you are buying: you are buying a prototype operating system that is of medium importance to Google or they don't enough resources. The system is pretty closed. Many basic apps/services are missing. Apps/services that are available can break at any time and there will be no support. Everything that this huge corporation can offer in terms of support is a "community support": unpaid volunteers.
