    Defective Mess.

Before I begin, I should say that this thing works great when it's actually working, which is almost never. I was ecstatic when I got this thing about September of 2018, believing that it would, in fact, actually be a good computer. For the first month, it worked absolutely amazing. Was able to manage about anything I threw at it, and ran about every game I had in full graphics. The issues began Halloween of that year, when I opened the computer to find it had randomly developed a dark spot on the screen. Initially, I was angry, but it was okay, I thought. I have a warranty, I thought. This should've been perfectly fine. I was quite wrong. I put off sending it in for a while, until two essential keys, the apostrophe and comma began to malfunction and eventually cease working altogether. I sent it in, believing that it would be fixed and I would hopefully get another couple years out of this thing before I had to deal with it again. I was very wrong. I got the computer back, opened it up, and the OS had been reset. Not an issue, since I had backed up all my files to an external harddrive beforehand. Once again, I was wrong. They had repaired the computer's hardware issues, but they had thoroughly botched the OS reload. Instead of the normal Windows 10 new computer startup, I had simply an option to log in as "other user" which required a username and password. In short, there weren't any accounts, so in short I was even unable to use the command prompt or advanced startup options to fix this. So, I sent in the computer again. After THREE WEEKS of waiting for them to fix their own mistake, I got it back once again. Everything seemed fine. Everything seemed cool. This time, however, it had seemed they had erred yet again. The wifi adapter, either in hardware or software, I do not know, was all but nonfunctional, requiring me to constantly restart it, an untenable situation for any computer. As a stopgap, I used an ethernet cable. It worked, but at the time of this review, the computer has completely given up on life, the CPU not functioning at all, meaning I have a $1350 paperweight, and due to my warranty having lapsed, I cannot even ask for aid, as to even speak to a representative outside of a "we're sorry, you need a warranty for help" you need one, and I am even unable to pay out of pocket. Not to mention the absolutely abysmal power cords for this thing, which I have spent well over $300 on keeping this essential piece of equipment. A slight quality of life increase in the form of a little blue light at where the cord plugs into your computer to show that the cord is properly functioning translates into a critical design flaw. If the cord is bent even at an obtuse angle for a long period of time, the wires become separated from the input, giving me yet more expensive paperweights. In short, for those who didn't read, a very good computer for people who don't mind hours of dealing with incompetent tech support, subpar part life and multi-week long waits for your computer to be repaired. When it works, it works good, though it has the same consistency as the stock market.

    Almost great

Almost a great gaming laptop but alienware has lost their edge. The negatives are not failures but mediocre performance on what is sold as a performance laptop 1 is low fps monitor on gaming laptop when they are cheap and easily attained. 2 ram ... knowing many of us are interested in performance they should have put a single 16 gb chip in vs 2 8gb ... now I have to spend more to upgrade , the included ssd is sub par at best with slow read and write speeds and small size. The last is temperature related throttling of the gpu and cpu. With little research it is found that people are replacing the thermal paste and fixing the issues... something that in production would have cost 25 c more per unit. Alienware ... Dell is negating performance over slight profit increases.

Starting off, that this Laptop is insane when it comes to performance. While it lags behind an i7 4790K and a 1070 GTX in a desktop, the difference is about 8-13% of performance. Unit also, ships with a G.Sync monitor, and a Killer network card, however lacks the Double-shot pro feature. (Which is why I knocked off a star). All in all, it's quick, has the performance gamers need in a easily take it with you size and weight. I used to take the Alienware 17 R3 with me everywheres, now its easier and lighter to take this one. Would definitely recommend it to gamers on the go.

    Awesome Device

So I received my alienware around August 23, with the minor annoyance of my first device being defective so Best Buy gave me a new one. Which was much better. Pros: 1. Build: The build quality is solid on the alienware the keyboard doesn't flex and there is minimum screen flex. I wouldn't worry about dropping my alineware, but there is no way in the world were I'd drop an machine that's $1,800. 2. Gaming: This machine is a beast at gaming the G-SYNC monitor plays game smoothly with out any screen tear. On more demanding games like Elite Dangerous you can get around 60 FPS on 1080p and on moderately demanding games like most shooters you can peak at 143 FPS depending on your graphics settings. 3. Media Consumption: I'd watch any movie on this the 15" screen makes movie watching very comfertable combined with the almost "surround sound" speakers it is quite the enjoyable experience. The speakers on this is phenomenal it gets louder than the fans when gaming. Though this isn't particularly built for netflix n' chill it gets a little hot when the ventilation is covered. 4. Screen: the 1920 x 1080p 15" FHD IPS screen on this provides nice viewing angles. 5. Upgradeability: This system is very upgradable the back is easy to access if you want to upgrade your RAM in the future. You can also connect an Alienware graphics Amplifier to update your graphics driver. 6. Long battery life although if you plan on gaming under battery that would probably give you around an hour. Cons: 1. Weight if you're looking for a system for school use/gaming this is not the one it weighs around 5 bl and let me tell you from first hand experience that it's horrendous to carry around school all day. Get the MSI stealth 15" or the Razer Blade if you want a system for school/gaming. 2. USB ports you only have 2 USB type 3 ports one USB type C port and one thunder bolt port. Not enough ports an average gamer takes up two of those USB ports so that leaves no room for anything else.

I started off with a MSI GS63VR STEALTH-252 which I did like. My issue with that laptop was I didnt feel overtime the computer was made sturdy enough for me and the speakers were just plain bad. I decided to exchange is for this Alienware. It is pricey but the difference is noticeable in build and just overall feel and quality. PROS- Excellent vibrant screen sturdy durable build Can run anything. Excellent spekers im 44 and it doesnt look like im 1a yr 15 old -(looks classy) Cons- Expensive Heavy compared to the MSI 15'6 Have to DL drivers for the network to stop WiFi connection issues. Overall very happy with this laptop! Love it and worth the extra money.

    Broke don’t buy

Got this computer in August, 5 months ago. Broke down and they have to replace the motherboard. I’m a college student and need a computer for school and work which all my files are on. Now I have to wait to ship it in and get repaired and have no idea how long that’s going to take. For over $2,000 this shouldn’t happen. At least let me have a temporary computer for the time being as now this is a huge inconvenience to my school work and job.

    Do not buy Open Box

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I recently purchased an open box of this laptop and found plenty of problems with it. First of all, Windows was not activated at all. Second, the 1TB hard drive was not detecting on this laptop but did on my desktop. Lastly, the Ethernet port and one USB port did not work at all. I give the computer a 1/5. It had beast specs and ran games easily but it was not worth the issues it gave me. Not forgetting to note, the open box was geek squad inspected.

Temperature Issues and Poor Customer Service

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Constant overheating issues with this laptop. 85-95 degree average temperatures on a cpu stress test. Horrible paste job on the cpu and gpu.Dell customer service is absolutely horrible and will do everything they can to try and put you in the wrong. Had 2 techs come out to service the laptop under warranty. First tech fixed heating issues with new heat sink sent by Dell, but he messed up my video cable and caused my screen to not work. Second tech replaced the mobo and fixed screen issues, but the heat issues came back. Ultimately I cannot recommend this laptop, or any Dell / Alienware product, to anyone. I returned the laptop to my local Best Buy because it was still within the return period. Happy to be an elite plus member, because if I wasn't, then I would have been stuck with a leg warmer. If anyone has questions regarding this laptop just reply to my review and I will gladly give more information on why this product is not a good choice.

    Motherboard after motherboard.

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Beware of the Alienware motherboard. Received the laptop in February as a gift. Worked well for about 8 months. The motherboard failed in the middle of October. 3 phonecalls (bout an hour or so each with Dell, three photos in an email, and going in an endless loop because they won’t just replace it, I have a tech coming to fix. Tech fixes motherboard Nov 5, all is well. Now it’s December and the motherboard has failed again. Currently on hold with Dell, let the endless loop begin again! Stay away from Alienware or buy Best Buy’s protection plan so you DONT have to deal with Dell!

    Light bleed, defective screen

Google screen issues with this model before you buy. I got a defective one. Never seen a panel with so much light bleed. Not even acceptable for a $500 computer let along an $1,800 one. Very disappointing. Returned same day. Best Buy had a single employee working returns during the busy holiday season. Waited a very long time for help.

    VERY UNDERWHELMING

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Based on the ton of great reviews here, I must have ended up with a dud. Unlike the store display, the colors are "washed out" looking, even after going through the calibration process. It seems like there is some light bleed. When I placed the order in-store, the sales representative told me this laptop has a 144hz refresh rate, WHICH IT DOES NOT!! It is a 60mhz. Also, for an SSD, the load times should be faster. I have physical drives on other machines that are just as quick. I guess I should have ordered the ASUS GL503VS-DH74 I originally planned on buying. This is definitely getting returned.

The initial computer did not work right out of the box. Best Buy sent it in to be repaired and on its return was damaged so badly in transit it was replaced with a new one. That one worked for less than two years before it had a major failure.

I bought my laptop 2 weeks ago and I have already problems with booting up my laptop. It won't turn on, I don't have any image. The computer is defective and I don't live in USA so I can go to best buy and make the warranty valid, I have to go directly to the dell services here in Mexico, and see what kind of problem the computer has. You pay so much money to receive a defective machine
