    Great computer for gaming--and upgradeable!

I love this computer. The 4K screen is gorgeous--clear and bright with vivid colors. Games such as Witcher 3, Fallout 4, Skyrim with high-res mods, Dragon Age Inquisition, and Ashes of the Singularity all run smoothly on high/ultra settings--I run most of them in the in-game option of 1920x1080 (for most of those, you can leave the native resolution on 4K). For today's games, I am very happy with the GTX 970m. One of the reasons I chose this computer is the optional Alienware Graphics Amplifier, so that it is more future-proofed, which means that if I want to, I can use a desktop GTX 1080 or whatever comes out in the next few years, and then if I want to run everything in 4k with good framerates, I should be able to. This computer also comes with a Thunderbolt 3 usb-c port. And it does have bluetooth, even though it's not mentioned in the specs. This computer is very fast--it boots within 8 seconds or less. Also, I love the keyboard--just has a great feel to it. I used my Best Buy Reward toward a memory upgrade (2 sticks of Kingston 8 GB 2.133 GHz DDR4 260-pin [model # HX421S13IBK2/16]), so now my computer has 16GB. It was super easy to put in the new memory sticks. Just unscrew the back, take the old ones out, put the new ones in, start the computer, and Huzzah--16 GB RAM. If you want, you could use 2 16GB sticks for a max of 32 GB. Someday I may also purchase another SSD M.2 stick (there's room for one more), so I may get a 1 TB stick in a year or so. As some others have mentioned, be sure to update all your drivers--Alienware's support site makes it easier to download them. So overall, it's a great computer with a strong processor, stunningly beautiful screen, great graphics--with the graphics, memory, and storage easily upgradeable for the future.

This laptop had me drooling over the screen. It's fast fluid and gorgeous. Initially had a lot of problems with wifi and 4k display running apps but after a few updates it's working properly. There is a very annoying display driver crash error that happens far too frequently though

I am very impressed with this laptops performance so far. I only had it about a week but it seems to run all my game on max settings w/o any problems. I do have a gaming desktop with better hardware in it, but for what I got for the price for portability with the laptop it was worth it hands down.

I bought it because I've always wanted a computer but didn't know what to buy, and it's great! It plays every game I've downloaded so far. Such as: Arma 3, H1Z1, Beamng Drive etc. If you have the money, definitely worth it!

I had hoped dells quality would improve but it hasnt. Machine gets hot when gaming, 4k is overhyped as video gets blurry/fuzzy on the screen. Battery drains fast. Took it back and waiting for the new ROGs to come out.

    Horrible Dell support !

Let me start with, I didn't purchase the laptop I received it as a gift but it came from Best Buy. Within my 3rd power on I notice my brand new Alienware takes about 5 minutes to boot which in this price range is beyond unacceptable. Upon calling Alienware/Dell support a tech got in my computer and pocked around deleted some drivers add some stuff rely on some 3rd party software to diagnose downloaded from websites I would never even visit, without even hash verification. All things considered he fixed my issue only to find out soon as I hang up that all my windows 10 apps don’t work anymore. Called couple days later since 2 hours on the phone just drained me and…. my nightmare began. First guy was clueless he was reading for 30 minutes then started to force me to register my laptop with Dell. For most of you that might not be a problem but I value my privacy and why wouldn’t I? Why should I be held hostage over personal choice? I called total of 4 times I was refused support even by a manager! At the very last call I was told the only way I can fix my issue is to re-install windows but they will not send me recovery flash drive because I didn’t register my laptop which I had for a total of 1 week at that time . I was also threaten if I don’t register my product my warranty will be voided all together! The laptop looks great and for most users fast enough. But before you buy it consider next few things: Yes, 4k is awesome but legacy parts of windows are impossible to see! NOT ALL SSD ARE EQUAL! The solid state drive that comes with this model is one of the slowest M.2 drives you can find on the market! 8GB of memory is what you would expect from a notebook in much lower price point. There are only 2 memory slots which make memory upgrade very limited and costly! Worst of all there is absolutely no color representation accuracy at ALL! Colors are so exaggerated and I am yet to find a way to calibrate it in windows 10

    Amazing laptop

I bought this laptop for productivity. I don't travel so didn't need the portability of a lighter / thinner laptop. The UHD screen is amazing. Keyboard is very good. Better than any laptop I've used (Dell Latitude, Thinkpad T400, Dell M4800#. Fit and finish on the laptop is excellent. I would have prefered a more sedated #business# design though. That is my only complaint is the design is too 'gamer' oriented. Also wished Alienware had put in 4 memory slots instead of 2. Laptop stays very cool using for productivity #email, word processing# and mainly programming. One of the benefit of the advanced cooling system designed for gaming.

Great hardware but poor quality control...

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Looking to replace my aging laptop I came to the store looking for a high quality laptop with the most current hardware available. I walked out with this laptop knowing that the specifications tell you all you need to know: - 17.3" 4K Ultra HD display (3840x2160) - Intel® Core™ i7-6700HQ processor (Skylake) - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M with 3GB GDDR5 - 8GB DDR4 RAM - 1TB hard drive and 128GB SSD It also supports the Alienware Graphics Amplifier which is a plug in/expansion module that allows you to use a full size graphics card. When I took it home I was amazed with how it ran as well as the crispness of the high resolution screen. Everything I threw at it worked flawlessly. With that being said, there was one problem: The LCD panel has atrocious backlight bleed/yellowing along the bottom that runs along the bezel. It's not very noticeable working in a brightly lit room, but once the lights are dimmed it sticks out like a sore thumb. It is completely distracting. Whether this is a unit specific defect, a quality control issue, or a design problem I find it to be completely unacceptable. For that reason and that reason alone I cannot recommend it and will be returning mine. For the money spent on such a laptop you should not encounter something like this.

It did have issues out of the box. Blue screen of death. Just update all the drivers and you are fine. Was worried about running games at 4K so was planning on the graphics amplifier. Not even needed. Runs rise of the tomb raider in 4K like a champ. So I'm holding off. Been playing everything at 4K. Text can be hard to read naturally at 4K so have to sit close. Quality build. Very solid. Runs everything great. Future proof with upgrade capabilities and graphics amp. Great bang for the buck. Alienware is now all I'll buy.

More power than it can handle

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Literally, this device draws more power, even with low voltage components, than the motherboard can properly provide. I have had power issues since day 1 from USB ports failing, to a completely dead device that I had to return and get a new computer... still same issues. Sometimes wont shutdown, sometimes wont start up. Its not the 'best' engineering I have seen, but easy to open and maintain. I would not recommend to beginners of gaming PC's since it requires some techincal knowledge of operate and fix the minor glitchs. If you can live through that (I cant believe I am saying this about alienware) its the best priced computer you can get with these specs (that I was looking for in my laptop) 7.5/10 would recommend... On another note, you don't actually get 4 USB 3.0 like the picture shows. You get 3 USB 3.0s and 1 USB C. Minor error. The only reason this laptop is so spectacular is the PCI port on the back which allows you to purchase a desktop graphics card, once you buy the dock from alienware for $300, its $200 on bestbuy, you can plug in any desktop grade graphics card to use. AMAZING. Totally powerful machine. Great value... notice I say great value, not great computer... A great computer a this price, I would have had to pay around $1850 Please comment on my review. I would be happy to answer any question you may have on this laptop

Beautiful Design But Fails Everywhere Else!

Went in to Best Buy not expecting to spend the thousand dollars that I did on a laptop, I just wanted something that had windows 10 and a decent drive. This was exactly what I was looking for, but bring it home and the HD graphics card kept crashing over and over again. I tried doing everything the internet said to try and everything the Geek Squad suggested, but to no luck nothing worked so I figured maybe it was something wrong with the one machine so drove the whole hour away to go and exchange for the last one they had. First of all not only did I still manage to come home with the same broken laptop somehow(they say due to it having the same exact box was the excuse, so once again had to waste the gas to go back and get the other one!), but even the second one had the same problem. This wasn't necessarily Best Buy's fault but was for sure alienwares! Although this is the first one I have ever owned can honestly say was not impressed!

I have always read bad things about Alienware. "Oh it's just a gimmick for money." or "You could build a way better machine for less money." Frankly, I think those folks are right in some circumstances, but don't take into account the rest of us that are more "grab and go". My wife bought this for me for a birthday present. I do a lot of 3D programming and my desktop pc's are all "high end" so she grabbed this for me. Needless to say I was skeptical at first, but this thing has really proved me wrong over the last few weeks. The trackpad works great, the built in function keys are all great, and the machine tackles everything I throw at it. Seriously! I mean it when I say "Don't knock it till you try it!"

    Frozen Gaming

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Certainly, there is much to like about this machine. The fit, finish and materials all appear to be well designed and functional. The epic silver doesn't show finger prints and is easy on the eyes. The 4K screen is sharp and bright. It runs quiet and cool. Oddly, though when I fired up this device it immediately froze. It stayed that way for awhile and then began to run its own pre-assessment test. Upon completion it repeated this process of electronic self-scrutiny. Chatting with tech help proved to be quite helpful. Immediately, he mentioned two things that were rather surprising. The machine was not new, even though I purchased it as a new device, but, in fact, had been rebuilt. Furthermore, it appeared that there were still problems with the USB mounts on the motherboard. A new one has been installed but evidently significant issues remained. After 2 hours, we were able to get it up and running. However, it never correctly loaded. There was always a page that came up that identified the parts of the machine. Finally, the techie told me to return it the next day. I did, and BB, quickly gave me a refund. It was a lot of money for a lot of headache. You'd be well advised to look for a different product.

I have received 3 computers in the last month and half. Their computers are great for the ten minutes they work. After that there is total and complete aggravation and frustration, not to mention the hours upon hours of tech support. I'm talking about 6 hours probably more. I am talking about 2 computers in a month and a half. Don't be tempted, you'll regret it. -CPU Fan failed -Bluescreeing every other hour -It had several malware and Trojan horses on it already -the mechanical HDD failed within 3 days -the screen is not 4K, there is massive screen tearing -says 8gb's of ram but it's really 3.5 usable Bottom line Alienware cheaped out on this you are basically buying a name and not a reliable laptop at all. Also the i7 in it is an older model than advertised.
