Customers are saying

Customers have good things to say about the Echo Dot (2nd generation)'s ease of use, sound quality, and small size, frequently praising its affordability and Bluetooth connectivity. While some users found the setup a bit challenging and noted occasional issues with Alexa's responsiveness or volume, the positive feedback on its core features outweighs these concerns. Many appreciate its use as an alarm clock and its integration with smart home devices.

    Great voice-activated speaker!

This device upon voice request will let me know the temp outside, the latest news, and wake me up in the morning. It plays soothing music to help me sleep at night from my Pandora account. It answers questions such as a math problem or an answer to a trivia question. It turns my hue light bulb on, off, or dims it. Recommend it!

Exactly like a regular Echo, but small and cheap. Hook up some external speakers and you're off to the races, McCoy.

This is a great option for the kids to each have an "Alexa" in there room. I am tired of my 5 year old asking for the same song over and over again, so now he has his own in his own room and he can listen to the same 3 songs 10 times in a row, love the fact that that this has output so I can pile the music through my stereo, the sound quality is fine for the kids and given that it's only $30 I wasn't expecting any sound quality, i was actually shocked when it played music

I bought one for myself, ended up buying 2 more for the house and 6 additional for Christmas presents. Finally a gadget that understands the human voice almost flawlessly and actually performs a service! In the post-phonebook era, Alexa makes it easy to find phone numbers and store hours, simply by asking. Ask a practical question and instantly get a useful reply. Ask a silly question and get a truly witty response. It even relays orders to less verbal household minions, like my Nest thermostat and Lutron light dimmers. As with smartphone apps, folks are writing new Echo apps (called skills), which make these gizmos smarter by the day. The Echo will stream music from the Internet. The internal speaker is clear but definitely not the end-all for high fidelity reproduction. It does have an analog output jack to connect it directly to your hi-fi, with excellent true stereo reproduction, and can also link via built-in Bluetooth. Retails at $50, but frequent sales at the $40 price point...and Best Buy will match other vendors' sale prices. Mine is black but they're also available in white with no other change in price or performance.

    Echo or Google Home?

I purchased the Echo Dot (ED) and 2 Google Home (GH) units. So I am in a position to compare them a bit. They are both loads of fun and since I am not comparing the GH to the original Echo I won't compare features like sound quality, etc. What first attracted me to the ED was the price and the ability to purchase directly from Amazon just by talking to the ED. However, it does much more than that. I would say that the ED is worth every penny if sound quality not your main focus. It does have a built-in speaker but it's not hi-fi in any way. However, it is fine for listening Alexa's voice. Having said that, it does almost everything else the Echo does. And Echo does a lot! What attracted me to GH was the ability (with a Google Cast unit) to stream to my home theater system. I have plenty of music in the Google Cloud and now, rather than playing it through the GH speaker, I can just tell it to play through my home sound system. To me, that's huge. None of the Echo products can do that. Another was the resources the Google has that no one else does. The Echo products use Bing as their information source and GH uses, well... Google! There are many questions that GH can answer that Echo simply can't. So from a general information perspective, GH kicks ED's butt. Google GH is adding new things all the time, as is Amazon. But right now Amazon is kicking GH's butt in terms of working with 3rd party devices. Until recently if you wanted to book an Uber ride you would have to use Alexa. Now I see that you can do the same thing with GH. I'm sure that both of these units and their abilities are in their infancy and you will see much more from both of them in the coming months and years. So in a way, this is about the hardware itself and your trust in the company that developed it. If want to order from Domino's Pizza, or want more options in working with 3rd party devices, the ED wins hands down. They both do the basics (light control, thermostat control, etc.) but the Amazon products works with many more brands at this time. I just look at GH's potential. Google has your calendar, your music, Google Maps, Google Mail, all of your contacts, Google News, Google Translate, etc. And you know they're not just going to sit around and let Amazon beat them at this game. They have so many more resources for your information and and general information that I foresee that Amazon's lead will eventually shrink. Bottom line? I like both of them very much. In many respects, Echo is far ahead of GH. If you must order products from Amazon, or work with specific devices that the ED does and GH does not, and you need all that right now, you need go with an Echo device. If you want instant access to more esoteric or even general information and get answers, GH is best. But remember, this will be a hard fought battle and don't count either company out yet. If you can, just purchase one of each. For around $180 (or less if they are on sale) you can check out the best of both worlds and watch this amazing technology mature before your very eyes (or ears).

I have a mostly Alexa household with the competitor smart devices mixed in as well. Echo Dots are in almost every room allow for a household intercom system, telephone service, streaming music/news, voice assistant, control of smart lights and TVs, etc. and much more. I don't know how I'd get by without Alexa in my life. She's always there and doesn't get jealous if I talk to Siri or Goog-le. If I want a better music experience in a particular room, I connect the Dot through Bluetooth to a Bluetooth speaker. Alexa, supported by Amazon, is always improving and has excellent free phone support. I find that there still appears to be more connectivity and skills available with Alexa compared to the competitor AI devices although they are catching up. One thing that I wish Alexa would be able to do is to not rely on my cell phones contact list for phone contacts because in a household with a number of different people one really doesn't want others to potentially make a phone call to someone on your complete contact list. I would prefer making a contact list for Alexa's use online of just those people and businesses I want to allow anyone to access publicly in the household and perhaps also have the ability to ask Alexa to access my private contact list (using a pass code for access) when wanting to contact someone on that list. The product is great! Amazon makes a large variety of devices and you can't go wrong with any of them, e.g. ones with better speakers, and ones with video & cameras.

After reading reviews for both the dot and the google home mini, i went with the dot. It works great and from the start after setting it up i was using it without problems. Connecting it with the wemo smart plug i bought was also very easy and its great being able to control it with alexa. The only problems i have with it so far are two things. 1. Every now and again alexa has problems connecting to my wifi. I suspect that it has something to do with the wifi signal itself and not alexa. 2. Unlike the google home you do need to be somewhat more precise when asking things. Other than that its a great product and i will probably get another one for the bedroom.

I love this Echo dot. I use it to set a timer to wake me up every morning. It plays music and I can set alarms to remind me of things to do. I have it set to turn on lights at my home automatically. It can check the weather for me and let me know if the weather will be bad on my way to work.

This is an excellent device! I received it as a Christmas gift and it has improved my life! I wake up and get my news. I play music while working and even get my favorite sports teams game schedules. I do this all with a single voice command. I have even added an Echo to my home. I would definitely recommend this product!!

We received our first "dot" as a gift and she is a great addition to our family room / kitchen space. She plays us a little music (we paired her to a nice bluetooth speaker) she runs a cooking timer and answers our random questions. So we decided to get a second one for our special needs daughter's room. She can easily play music and she'll even ask Alexa to tell her a joke. Plus, I can tell her to go to bed or wake up by using one Alexa to talk to her in her room.

I've been using an Echo since Amazon was beta testing them with limited releases a couple of years ago. At first the features were limited but still quite useful. Over the past 2 years, it has done nothing but gotten better every day! Amazon is pouring a huge amount of resources and development into this product and it shows. Every week I get emails of new features and skills Alexa can do. Speaking of skills, because of the open platform business model, there are thousands of skills to enable. Even my local news station and some local vendors have an Alexa skill. I have my Echo's integrated with everything from my smart switches, lights, Logitech Harmony Hub and more. My whole family is uses them on a daily bases and has become part of our daily routine. Now with the affordable price of the Echo Dot, we have them scattered all throughout the house and my office. Now if only I had one in my car! (CES 2017 already addressed that too!) For the price, there's no beating it. You would be surprised how useful it can be. Even if you didn't take advantage of all of it's features, it's a lot of fun to have.

It was bundled with my ecbobee as a promo so that in itself is already a win. Product wise this thing is great. Picks up voice from pretty much anywhere in the house and I don't even need to yell. Even from 2nd floor. Its not battery operated like the more expensive echo so you will need to have this plugged at all times for it to work. Pair this with you prime account and trigger whatever you wants, orders, music, search, pandora, spotify, weather, etc. Awesome little assistant. Got it in white.

Seems like every day we get closer to the future presented to us in movies like Star Trek. This product definitely takes a big step toward that future. Voice activated device can control your smart home devices, connect to bluetooth speakers, answer questions you pose to it, set alarms & many other applications. I have other voice recognition devices that barely hear me or understand me a lot of the time. The Amazon Dot blows them away. Always hears me. Always give me some type of response. You can also use this to connect to your music services like Pandora, Spotify, or Amazon music. Dot has an internal speaker which is fine for a young child's room or if you want to use at work. If listening in your living room or garage, you will probably want to connect to a speaker. That could be done with cable or bluetooth. I connected mine to a bluetooth speaker seamlessly. Truly a great product! I regularly get the weather before work, ask for movie showtimes in my area & ask it simple questions I need a quick answer to. Next year Amazon will probably have the Holodeck for sale. Until then this is pretty awesome.

For what it is, it is great. The speaker is not very good, so don't expect to have your room filled with quality sound. But if you want to be able to easily add items to your shopping list or use it as an intercom from different rooms in the house it is awesome. You can also plug in an external speaker if you want to listen to music and have it sound good. Overall a great product for what it is, and if you can get it for $30 on sale that makes it even better.

The Echo Dot is, potentially, one of the best devices you can buy. The full Amazon Echo is better, but the only true difference is the speaker--which is phenomenal on the Echo, and just this side of okay on the Dot. The Dot overcomes this by providing two methods of connecting to external speakers. You can pair it to a powerful bluetooth speaker or plug it in using a normal 3.5mm jack. You can have it set up to a full home theater system if you like. Aside from the speaker it retains full Alexa functionality and that means you have access to the best digital assistant available. Better and more charming than Siri, much more lively and in-tune with your life than Google. And your perfect gateway to a smart home. Paired with various skills (apps), you can control just about any smart home device. We use our Alexa devices to control everything from the lights, via Philips Hue, our home theater via Logitech Harmony Hub, and our Christmas Tree with a Belkin WeMo smartplug :) Highly, highly, highly recommended. We have an Echo downstairs in the Kitchen, and two other Dots to make things complete.

We use our Amazon Echo most often to turn lights on and off and to answer simple questions. We also use it to play relaxing sounds in our bedroom when we want to relax and sleep. Set up is easy and the device works well. You can add what seems like a limitless number of skills. It's overwhelming but convenient. Ordering products from Amazon via the Echo is hit or miss. It doesn't always load the right products to our cart. All in all, we're happy with it.
