Customers are saying

Customers have good things to say about the Echo Dot (2nd generation)'s ease of use, sound quality, and small size, frequently praising its affordability and Bluetooth connectivity. While some users found the setup a bit challenging and noted occasional issues with Alexa's responsiveness or volume, the positive feedback on its core features outweighs these concerns. Many appreciate its use as an alarm clock and its integration with smart home devices.

Easy to use and set up. Pretty cool for checking things like the weather or finding things near you. The kids just started using it and it seems like it could be a good source of info for certain subjects at school.

I wasn't at all interested in the Dot, let alone the full sized Echo - but my husband (who works in technology) decided one day to buy an Echo and two Dots all at the same time. I was reluctant to use any of them because I didn't see the point - we already have a music system in the house and have tablets at the ready for random inquiries. But I have to say that these things live up to the hype. While I'm cleaning I can yell a command and Alexa complies. She'll play music or help us spell something or give definitions, which my 6 year old daughter loves too. My husband also paired Alexa with the Wink home automation system so now we can have her turn lights on and off without getting up. This will be even more helpful in three months when I deliver our new baby and won't be able to run over to light switches as easily for a while. We have the Echo in our kitchen which is on the main floor and one Dot upstairs in our bedroom (great for when you get in bed and realize you've left the hall lights on) and the final Dot in the finished basement. Must have items for me... now I'm hooked! My Dad was so entertained while putting Alexa to the test at our house (and he is in no way considered to be tech savvy) that we bought him one for his birthday and he uses it every day.

The Echo Dot is an incredible companion to the rest of Amazon Echo “Alexa” series of products. It does everything its big brothers can do at a significantly lower price. Although it has less speaker capability, this can be readily overcome by linking the Dot to a bluetooth speaker thereby making its sound compatible with the higher priced products at a lower cost. When first released about two years ago, it sold for $99. Just recently, it’s price was $49. Grab it at $29 and you will be pleased. Makes a great gift! Don M.

Small, versatile, lightweight, and lots of great features packed into one package. I really like having the ability to connect to connect my devices via bluetooth and to connect the Echo Dot to my external speakers and listening to Alexa play different songs. I highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a small Alexa solution with great quality.

Well worth the purchase, even if it is the smaller one. Gives you chance to play with it in the event you would want to later purchase the larger one. Works well, but sometimes it has difficulty learning your voice so you must speak clearly. You don't have to be close to it, you can be 2 rooms away as long as it can hear you clearly. I would definitely recommend this item, especially as we continue to move towards an autonomous world. Small and compact, you can even travel with it. Just add power and wi fi and you are set.

Love our smart house! Love Alexa on Amazon Echo Dot. Cheaper solution than Amazon Echo with all of the same functionality. We have smaller rooms, so the more sensitive microphone in the full-size Echo is not necessary. Was able to place 3 Dots for less than the price of one Echo. Small learning curve learning how to phrase questions to obtain useful responses.

We purchased a few Echo Dots at the same time bought an Echo, so I'll share some of the same comments/feedback that I shared about the Echo. This was our entry point into IoT/smart home devices and we're enjoying it. Not perfect, but it's still early in the game for voice-activated devices. The Dots are a great way for folks to get their Smart Home connected. The speaker on the Dot is what usually receives the most criticism, so I'll add my two cents by saying I feel the speakers are not bad, but adequate. If we want to listen to music and want slightly better quality, we'll pair a Bluetooth speaker. Even a decent $35-25 Bluetooth speaker does the trick, though admittedly we're not audiophiles. Setup was relatively straight-forward. Not a huge fan of the Alexa app, but that's a separate review, I suppose. For the uninitiated, you'll find out that you'll spend quite a bit of time in the app even though this is a voice user-interface device. For example, we have about 35 skills enabled after just over 7 weeks of playing with the devices. It's getting a bit difficult to remember the commands for launching different skills. Ultimately, you'll likely need to refer to the skills list for reminders. I'm surprised how much we use lists, reminders and alarms. If your reminder descriptions are difficult for Alexa to sort out, you'll also find yourself going into the app to edit the reminder. The bigger surprise that we had was how much we appreciate 'Drop In'... think an intercom for your home. We're not in a huge house, but it's just nice not having to yell to get a family member's attention, e.g., dinner time, or a 5-minute warning as we're getting ready to leave the house. Alexa skills that run the gamut - some good (math skills practice, surf report checker, and interactive storytelling skills), some excellent (link to smart devices, streaming content like TED Talks/The Daily/NPR) and all lot not worth even mentioning. One thing we've had a tricky time getting set up is to get Alexa control of our Fire TV. It's been a couple months and a couple failed attempts. There's plenty of documentation online about how to do this, but we just haven't had any luck. I suspect this is mostly user error, but it would be great if 'it just worked' since they are both Amazon products.... honestly this is a relatively minor niggle. Of course, the whole privacy issue lingers in the back of my mind but there's not a lot you can do at this point unless you want to wait on the sidelines for the market to mature. Fingers crossed Amazon and the other smart device companies to do their part.

Amazon Echo is a great device (I was one of the first to have one and waiting for months for my first Echo to ship as Amazon vastly underestimated the demand for a device like this) and the Echo Dot (2nd generation) is fantastic in its size and capability. There is no volume ring on the 2nd gen Dot like there is on the original Echo and the 1st gen Echo Dot but it's no big deal as there are volume buttons now. Most of the time you'll want to adjust the volume by voice anyway (like "Alexa volume 5"). The fact that you can just talk from across the room and it can hear you (most of the time) really sets this apart. If you think you already have an Echo because you have Siri, Cortana, or Google, then know that it's just not the same. Things I do: set timers, set alarms, get weather info, ask basic questions, listen to music (like Prime Music, Prime Stations, songs I bought, etc), listen to radio, ask for jokes, turn things on and off, and I'm sure I'm forgetting some things. The Echo really excels at playing music. I love it than I can ask for a song I want to hear and it will play it (most of the time anyway). At night I often listen to a local radio station and I just say "Alexa stop" without having to get out of bed when I want to stop listening.

I got this to control a single Hue White light in my bedroom and was so impressed by its capabilities that I got 3 more Hue bulbs to control in the bedroom! Once I started to discover all that it could do, I bought an Amazon Echo for my livingroom and am able to control my HVAC, home theatre (turn on/off system, change channels, volume, etc. - a Harmony Hub is required for this), along with my Color Hue bulbs in my livingroom, all with just my voice (or my wife’s, Alexa knows the difference!) from either device.

I was looking at the dot and the echo... after some research i learned that the major difference between the dot and echo is the speaker on the echo. However, I already had a bluetooth speaker so getting the echo seemed moot. I ordered the dot for $40, brought it home, downloaded the alexa app, connected it to my wi-fi and in minutes i was testing out the features... this device is going to make me lazier than i already am, and i'm okay with it. I haven't tested it out completely, but the dot can hear me half way down the hall without me screaming my head off. It's a great little product. Amazon is bringing out some great stuff...

Great for news & weather in the morning, recipes and adding to shopping lists while I'm cooking, and music all the time.
