It works and hears you very well. The google home mini has a much better speaker, but you can use Bluetooth or hardwire another speaker to this one.

The Echo Dot is as good as the Echo for much less money. It does everything the Echo does.

We have an Alexis unit in our home already but I added an echo for a bedroom unit. Don't need the fancy speaker. We use it to control our Honeywell smart thermostat and a Wemo smart plug without too much difficulty. I thought it would be better for Google searches for info but I don't think they're licensed for much in that area yet. I also have the Google Home unit and it really doesn't do that any better.

Bought this for my dad, wasn't sure he would actually get any use out of it but he quickly learned to love Alexa and uses it for sports weather etc

Have the full size Echo in the living room/kitchen. Added the dot to the master bedroom.

I bought Echo Dot mostly for its ability to answer questions. It does a fairly good job of this but is limited to fairly simple, straightforward questions. Seems to be more knowledgeable about popular culture topics (e.g., Who starred in the movie "La La Land"?) than history, science, politics, etc. The Dot can set a timer, turn on/off a radio station, tell you the weather forecast. It CANNOT turn on the lights, adjust room temperature, or otherwise manage your home environment unless you also buy a special device for that purpose (e.g., Nest), which is often rather expensive.
