It is a definite upgrade over the gen 2 model in about every way possible. For home automation I think it works great but if you are one to ask for or need more information I would suggest a google home. I honestly have both setups and I use the echo dot a lot more. It is a great device especially if you have already vested into the amazon ecosystem.

It is also great now to play music in my bedroom among the other skills that it can do without being limited to just having one Alexa Echo unit in another room.

Great for anything from playing music, getting a weather report, setting alarms, or even telling jokes. I was concerned about privacy but you can any delete any voice recordings through the app. I also fully appreciate that you can set the device to “guard mode” when you leave your home/office, and it’ll listen for sounds of breaking glass or alarms.

Finally decided to set it up & in glad I did. It's nice to be able to just tell Alexa what kind of music you want & it's on immediately. I set reminders & grocery lists. Alexa even tells me when I've had an Amazon package delivered.
