Connect it to your existing stereo or stand alone

Of course it also works as a stand alone device with pretty decent sound from such a tiny speaker. Just don't expect it to fill a room with sound.

We use it primarily to turn on/off lights in the home but also use it for the limited security feature that it provides (NOT compatible with my DropCam/Nest cameras). It's nice to stream my local talk radio station and SiriusXM stations in the kitchen. Looking back, I wish I had gotten the one with the built in clock for the bedroom.

Then I go TV shopping and come across a package including both a TV and Echo dot for a very great price. I got 2 and now after setting them up along with the Alexa app on my phone my family and friends love them and the things they can do and now see why I wanted one so badly.
