The Echo Dot does require and Amazon Account, the Alexa App downloaded on a smart phone or tablet, and a working outlet to plug in. There are step by step instructions included in the box and most customers report 5 minutes or less. If you have further questions about the device, call us! I went to two different locations and exchanged the item multiple times. The item itself would not connect to the internet for anything no matter what I tried to do
