My other larger style dot had much better sound as well as more volume. This distorts when turned up and does not have capability to go very loud. Wouldnt buy again/would have returned but i missed my window! :(

Posted .Hello lmksk! I am sorry to hear about your experience. The "larger style" device you are speaking of may be the full size Echo. That device is intended to be used for a more premium sound experience and fills larger rooms. The Dot is intended for smaller rooms or for night stands and does not have the same sound experience. You can improve this though by adding one more Echo Dot and pairing them together for stereo sound. This will give you a better experience than a lone Dot and may be a resolution for you to enjoy your Echo Dot as much as your full size Echo. Havent had one do what this one does ever. Wont play things as asked, shuts down on its own. No idea why but wish we could return because now im stuck with a paperweight. Not all are bad this one must just be a dud.

An Amazon membership is free and easy to setup and is only used to register your device and allow you to log in to the Alexa smartphone app to be able to customize your Dot to your preferences. There is a lot you can do for free on the Echo Dot like asking about the weather, setting timers, making voice calls to other Alexa enabled devices, control lighting/thermostats/smart plugs/appliances and more. If you want to play music, you can add your preferred music platform whether it be Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora and more. Great unobtrusive speaker

For a relatively inexpensive speaker, it has sound to compete with other way more expensive speakers. If you want the weather, ask Alexa. If you want the volume upper a bit, ask Alexa for volume 5 (or whatever). I use it to stream my pandora music. I just connect it via Bluetooth. If you don’t want it to listen to your conversations just hit the button on top, and a little red light illuminates. It is still functional.
