It is a easy way to get in contact with friends and family. And it will do everything your echo dot will do, just with a screen.

This one is the best overall device as far as music choices (linked to Sirius XM, with Amazon Music as a base resource), and 2nd to information database (compared with Google assistant). Speaker quality not close to HomePod (which is as good as Bose radio, though it is a little heavy on the bass), but definitely better than the Google clock. Information database much superior to Apple HomePod, but is a tad short of Google assistant clock.
