You can't completely disable targeted ads. If you want a device that has smart home capabilities and can just show a clock unless something else is requested of the assistant, get a Nest Hub. Decent sound quality for the size though.

On the device, navigate to Settings > Home and Clock > Home Content and disable the content you don't want to see rotating on your home screen; you can also access your Alexa Privacy settings to manage ad preferences and turn off interest-based ads from third-party skills and content providers.

Its great to have something to watch instead of just listening. Also I can do hands free video calling thur the alexa app and smartphones.
