I use this for my bedroom clock and alarm. If you talk soft to it, it will respond in a soft voice. Took a few minutes to get the programming down, but I love it.

The spot is really great on sound quality as well, & the dim screen at night is a total plus!!

However, Alexa still struggles to follow basic commands reliably, which makes the smart assistant experience frustrating. Another drawback is that you can’t freely use your music app of choice—being locked into limited options feels restrictive.

I am sorry that you are experiencing some reliability issues with Alexa. We are constantly working to improve upon our products and services and that includes Alexa herself. There have been numerous improvements over the years and we have more coming soon. Be sure to check up on how some of those changes will be an improvement for your experience with the upcoming Alexa+ service. We do still maintain a very intuitive and user friendly design with the standard version of Alexa however, so if you are finding issues with certain commands, feel free to provide feedback directly within the Alexa smartphone app or by simply telling her that you have feedback. Any and all feedback is welcome. You can also find an FAQ and Quick Tips directly within the Help section of the Settings and More section of the Alexa smartphone app. Lastly, you can absolutely use the music app of your choice and are not limited to just the default Amazon Music service. You can link accounts such as Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, amongst others by navigating to More (the 3 line icon in the lower right of the screen in the Alexa smartphone app), Music & More, then tap the gear icon in the top right. This will allow you to choose and link the service of your choice for Music and/or Podcasts. So you can even mix it up if you prefer a different service for Podcasts versus Music.
