It may have these functions now after a software update since that is all that would be needed to make it do that stuff.

We are sorry you are not enjoying your Amazon Smart Plug. The Smart Plug is simple to set up and no smart home hub is required with the device. You should be managing the device through the Alexa app. That is where you can set up routines that automate everyday tasks like turning on a light or brewing coffee. If your plug was set in a location where it did not receive a Wi-Fi signal, this would be an issue. Please ensure that your Wi-Fi credentials and Alexa App log in information are correct. If you did not pair the Smart Plug to the Alexa App, it would not complete actions like on and off in your space! The Smart Plug also automatically reconnects to Alexa after power/Wi-Fi outages, so super reliable.

So I have come to the conclusion that I need to just get up and turn the stereo off myself. It was a waste of money

I am sorry to hear of the difficulty you are having with the Amazon Smart Plug. I have these throughout my house and have had no issues, sometimes it can be the smallest detail causing the issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue: *Unplug your Amazon Smart Plug from the outlet, and then plug it back in *Reset your Plug by pressing and holding the button on the side of the device for 12 seconds. Release the button once you see the LED light. A blue LED blinks when reset is complete *Register your Amazon Smart Plug in the Alexa App *kindly restart your router and check that you're connecting the device to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network

The Amazon Smart Plug can be utilized by multiple family members in the same household by simply asking Alexa to turn lights off and on. The smart plug must be added to your home via the Alexa app so Alexa can discover devices you wish to communicate from. If you wish to use the smart plug for another family member that is not in your immediate household you can only control it if you are logged in on their Amazon/Alexa app and not your own. If you have second device this is doable to download log in for them (like as tablet), but not being in the same space can cause issues as you describe.
