Horrible build quality.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The display broke off the top as soon as I took it out of the box and removed the protective film. I had steak to cook so I still tried with the display resting in place. Cooked great steak, but I don't need a broken appliance in my home for over $200. The next day, I went back in exchanged it for another new one. I opened the box to be safe, and the display broke off again with next to no pressure applied. Really disappointed, I'll be looking for a different brand. Furthor more, the app is neat, but the process for connecting is slow and unreliable. The app didn't notify me when the timer ended.

Can be loud but works great
||Posted . Owned for 3 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had the original version that was mad out of all steal and was surprised of the poor build quality and how noisy it was compared to my last version that lasted 3 years before my husband dropped it. I ended up pay more for the Joule and I love it.

Time To Change Your Cooking Game
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Sous Vide cooking is a relatively new concept for the home cook. While sous-vide has been around for years, it isn't something that's considered mainstream for many of us. The idea is slow cooking food sealed in a plastic bag, either vacuum sealed or the easier/cheaper option is to use a Ziploc with as much air pressed out as possible. With most styles of cooking, you heat the food at a much higher temperature than you really want the food temperature to be. With sous-vide, you set the temperature to your ideal done-ness and walk away. There are lots of guides online of the best times and temps to be used depending on what you're making. One of the greatest features of sous-vide cooking is you can take a tougher cut of meat that generally requires long simmer times, and turn it into a tender, flavorful dinner. Anova is one of the more popular names in the business and the 1000W Precision Cooker is their latest entry in the market. The 1000W heating element will heat the water faster as well as keep it very consistent for the entire cooking period. During the few meals I've prepared, I'd have to add a little bit of water as it evaporated and the temperature came back quickly. I found the easiest way to interact with the Anova was through their mobile app. Using the mobile app, you can connect the Anova to your wireless network, set and adjust the temperature, set timers, as well as look at recipes. The Anova will send alerts to your phone, when it reaches temperature, the timer goes off and I'd assume if your water level gets too low (I never let that happen, but I'm sure it will at some point). The Anova app is one of the better smart home apps I've ever worked with, honestly. It seemed very intuitive without much of a learning curve required. Depending on what meal you're preparing, you'll likely want to finish the meal in a pan. The common term for meat eaters is the reverse sear. This is where you slow cook the meat sous-vide and then finish in a hot pan to get a nice crisp sear on the outside. Since you've cooked your meat to the desired internal temperature, all you're doing now is getting the texture and flavor on the outside. No need to leave the steak on the heat for any longer - it's already safe to eat. Using the Anova on a skirt steak, I was able to get a MUCH better sear on it than I have using traditional methods. Also, you can use frozen meats, you just need to adjust your sous-vide time. I wish Anova had more recipes available in the app, but there are so many guides, tips and tricks available online, this isn't a huge issue.

WIFI connectivity and Anova app are garbage
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Poor WIFI connectivity implementation. Setting up WIFI is a nightmare as the device has all kinds of early 2000s requirements, like requiring 2.4 WIFI and no support for modern WIFI security protocols. Using an eero mesh network seems to be a dealbreaker and I will have to set up a special network using an old WIFI access point from the 2000s to get this to connect. Make no mistake the device works manually through the control panel, but I could have bought a cheaper dumb device to avoid these headaches.

Won't connect with bluetooth nor wifi as advertise
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Instructions are very poor and almost non-existent. App doesn't connect with Bluetooth and therefore can't be connected with WiFi. Other issues identified on web site say that it is not compatible with 5 GHz WiFi and it must be turned off before device can be connected. All in all, I recommend to avoid this product if you want connectivity. Very disappointing to buy new product and it won't work.

Great device but beware the online recipes
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've been eyeing up Anova sous vide cookers since they were first brought to market and finally took the plunge on one. All I can say is that this thing is impressive. On first opening, you're greeted with minimal packaging and inserts for a device this size. You can use this with or without the Anova phone app, but I chose to go with to explore all the features. That ended up being where this shined and fell flat. Many recipes in the app are accurate, but I also ran across many that just didn't cut it. Soft boiled eggs for example did not cook well and even after 3 hours at the listed temp, the whites still came out runny. I placed them back in at 10 degrees higher and had better results. A major plus of the app is that you can see at a glance how much time is left in your recipe as well as push notifications for when your water has reached cooking levels. With all that being said, you'll want to experiment with smaller recipes before you go big time. And this device can handle the big time. Thanks to the 1000w heating element, this cooker would heat water faster than my stove and pot could heat it up (I tried). It also held water within 0.2 degrees F either direction once it reached cooking temp. The temperature sensor was well calibrated and my meat thermometer only registered a .3 degree difference. Clean up is also a breeze. The metal casing twists off and the coils can be easily cleaned with a small bottle brush or tooth brush. You'll want to do this from time to time to prevent mineral build up which can impact the usefulness of the cooker. All in all, I only had one big gripe, and that was the packaging. While they don't include a lot of extras in the box, the plastic insert they use does not list any recycle codes. This is a big let down and is something I would love if they fixed in future packaging.

Perfect food every single time!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I LOVE to smoke meat and grill, I do it 4-5 times a week all year round, including the winter! I've been looking at one of these to help elevate my cooking and take it to the next level... With grilling or smoking, its very difficult to hold meat at a particular internal temperature for a long period of time, and your margin for error is very, very small...This device completely simplifies it! It takes the guess work out of it and just helps you make the food perfect every single time. The first thing I tried on this was some ribeyes, I wanted to reverse sear these... so typically Id smoke them for about an hour at 225-250 until the internal temp was about 10-15 degrees lower than my desired final temp (rare to medium rare)... With this device however, I can put them in the sous vide and set the temperature and walk away.. If I get distracted or am playing with my kids or doing yard work, I don't need to stop what I'm doing, because the device will not go higher than the set temp... so the meat will not overcook! This is great! I set up the device, started it up, vacuum sealed my steaks and put them in the water bath for a few hours...fired up my grill, brought it up to temp while I was waiting, then I took them off and seared them on my grill at 600 degrees, and voila! Amazing steaks every single time... My favorite thing about this is its very easy to be consistent with your cooking every time, so its easy to duplicate your success!

One of the best steaks I’ve ever cooked
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Out of the box, everything is assembled and ready to go into the water. The clamp has a large knob that’s textured and easy to turn. You can read the instructions if you want which are helpful, but ultimately, I went to the internet and found some cook time and temperatures for things I wanted to try. Setup is really easy. Get a pot that will hold some hot water. Attach the sous vide cooker. I had mine just ½” from the bottom and made sure the water covered most of the stainless part of the device. Plug in the Anova and it comes on. Use the temperature button to set the temperature, use the timer button if you want to set a timer. Press the play button. Yup, that’s it. Drop in whatever food you want to sous vide (in a air deprived bag of course) and you’re sous vide cooking. I really wanted to try steak for my first sous vide experience. I set the temperature to 145 degrees (my wife likes well done steaks, what do you do?) and actually put ice water in the pot because I was headed to bed. The overall sous vide time was about 5 hours. The steaks came out perfectly cooked, I seared them off in a pan when they came out, and was nearly able to cut the steak with a butter knife. Vacuum sealing the marinade in around the steak really infused the flavors in the meat. I can’t wait to try ribs, tenderloins, filets, wings, and the like. What really made the experience a win for me, was knowing I can start it before I leave the house and don’t have to worry about cooking it a few hours over the recommended times and know I’ll have a super tender and delicious dinner when I get home. The biggest downside of this device is the WiFi experience. The setup process seems pretty straight forward, and for the most part is. The issue is the bugs around how the device connects to your WiFi. I never actually got mine connected and looking at the internet, many other people haven’t either. I spent maybe a hour trying to get it connected and stopped just short of changing my WiFi network name. In 2019 being able to connect something to WiFi shouldn’t be an issue. My water heater connects to WiFi. Anova still has a lot of work to do in this department. With that being said, in no way whatsoever, does this affect the quality of food, which is amazing, or the ease of use from the device itself. I will be using this cooking method every chance I get and the lack of WiFi isn’t going to stop me. If you love to cook and love using technology to make your food taste great, sous vide should be in your arsenal.

defective
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Wanted this so bad! Got he last one in all the Best Buy stores near me. The day came to make steaks for guests and the item was defective. It would not read accurate temp and not heat up. Had to run out and purchase the Nano, which worked as expected. I had them side by side in the same pot. This one just read the same temp no matter what. water circulated fine, but would not heat up. Dinner was nearly a disaster.

I'm new to cooking but the Anova helps me catch up
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Smart tech while cooking? Sounds like the future. I'm a tech guy, and is still aiming to make my home more like the Jetsons. The Anova is that device that allows you to utilize your already handy smart phone and aids you in the kitchen. At first, I too was skeptical about using such a device to "cook". First appearance I thought it was a hair iron, but once you hold it you notice immediately that this is built with quality. Downloading the app from the App store was simple and I was set up and ready to go in minutes. Pros: -Quality: Yes, this is an excellent cooker and has precise and accurate temperature control. Once you get past the part about putting your food in plastic sealed bags (not included, and I'll get into that later), you attach the Anova and clamp it down to your pot (also not included). This particular version is 1000 watts, so it heats up at a good amount of speed and maintains that level. -App controlled: Again, the future! You can have that peace of mind setting your Anova up and can safely step away and do other tasks outside/inside the kitchen because you now have a sous chef. Through the app you can control the settings such as timer, adjusting your temperature, and look up more recipes. There are a good amount of recipes on the app that you get lost scrolling down. You are also aided by several photos of what to do and since I'm a visual learner, this is invaluable. I can't wait to try Soft Boiled Egg, Sirloin Steak with Smashed Yukon Gold Potatoes, and many more. These recipes are interactive and are able to program your device at the same time. The touch screen interface on top of your device is also easy to navigate and set up the temperature and time. The best part about this technology is you will always have consistency because I have never cooked perfectly hard-boiled eggs until I got this! (at least in my experience this has been the case). Cons: -Not cordless: this was the biggest issue for me. The Anova comes with a power cord and thankfully we have 4 outlets adjacent to our stove top. I had wished this device was cordless because I was still a little concerned about having a cord lay on the stove top. But I get it, 1000 watts. How many AA batteries would you use up in one setting that can last 45 minutes? Bags: To use the Anova with most meats and vegetables requires placing them in vacuum sealed bags. So you are basically boiling the meats and then would have to pan sear them afterwards for that added crisped look/taste. That means if you don't already have a vacuum sealer and bags, you need to buy them. You can use resealable bags but I prefer vacuum sealing. You can get a large amount of bags on the internet so costs may not be an issue. Again, I'm new to cooking so I would have thought there would be a more cost-effective way in cooking with this device. Overall, I am very impressed with Anova's Precision Cooker. Smart technology meets master cooking (no pun intended) and provides an easier and effective approach to a newbie like me. My wife still has to use it but is equally impressed that this has motivated me to be more proactive in the kitchen. I wonder how long would it take for his to be voice operated and able to work along side your Alexa/Google Home devices? Maybe that's the next step.
