Started to scream louder than a smoke alarm in the middle of the night. There was not a power outage. The outlet was fine. It just wanted to have a deafening scream at 2:30AM. Buttons not responsive. I even yelled at it. I took it out to the yard and left it. In the next evening It was still screaming when I heaved it in the landfill. This thing is sealed cant fix it.

Thank you for taking the time to review our Back-UPS 900 VA unit. Please do a logic reset with the unit by turning it off, then unplug it from the wall socket and disconnect the battery. After those, please press the power button for 5 seconds while it's still unplugged from the power source and while the battery is disconnected. If the issue persists after doing the logic reset, please contact us via chat: https://www.apc.com/us/en/tools/chat/ or phone 800-800-4272, to assist you further. APC

APC - Back-UPS 900VA 9-Outlet/1-USB Battery Back-Up and Surge Protector - Black This Schneider Electric APC Back-UPS battery backup unit can keep critical devices, such as your computer, internet router and modem, powered up during electric blackouts. It also acts as a surge protector, protecting connected electronic equipment from what can be destructive power surges. It offers nine outlets (six offer battery backup and surge protection while the remaining three outlets only offer surge protection). It also has a slot to power USB devices. Before you do anything else, be sure to follow the directions to connect the battery. That’s really not difficult, but it is vitally important if you want the unit to work. While you can plug in up to nine electric devices (six of those draw power) and one USB device which also draws power, you need to remember that the more devices you connect that draw power during blackouts, the less total time you’ll have to power those connected devices. So, you should choose wisely and only connect your more critical devices to maximize your battery backup time during any power outage. Here’s some manufacturer’s guidance for backup times for various connections: • Network gateway (internet modem and router) – 5.9 hours • Entry-level PC w/20” LCD and network gateway – 90 minutes • Notebook computer and network gateway – 41 minutes • Mid-range PC with 20” LCD, Notebook and network gateway – 14.8 minutes • Smartphone (using built-in USB charging port) – 1 charge There are instructions for wall mounting if that’s your preference. I simply placed mine on the floor near an outlet and plugged it in to fully charge the unit initially. Even after fully charging the unit, I keep it plugged in to make sure it’s still fully charged should the power go out. I connected a desk lamp, a laptop computer and a wireless charging device for my phone. If I have a power outage, I plan to remove the fully-charged laptop to minimize the power draw. (I have a second unit in another room with my modem and router connected to keep my internet up and running.) There are a series of lights on the unit that alert you to various conditions (battery indicator modes, voltage sensitivity adjustment, and status indicators). They are well documented in the booklet that accompanies the unit. Be sure to register your unit online to take advantage of the three-year replacement guarantee. This is one device that you hope you won’t need, but you’ll definitely be glad you have it when and if you do need it.

I had a a battery back up in my home office that finally quit after ten years. This APC UPS 900VA was what I needed. My husband set it inside my desk cabinet and we plugged in my desktop Mac, modem and router in the backup designated outlets. The outlets were clearly marked which were backup or surge only. We decided not to plug in the peripherals (printers) since they were already on a different surge protector and didn’t need them to run in a power outage. There are nine outlets, so there is plenty of room if we change our minds. We elected to use the default alarm which will flash green lights if the power goes out, but has an audible when the battery backup gets low. We gave it a full twenty four hours to get charged. The next day, I simply unplugged the battery from the wall outlet to start a test. I looked inside the cabinet and noted that the light was blinking to indicate there was no power coming in but my computer was working and connected to the internet without missing a beat. Since we put the APC inside a well ventilated cabinet, I will never notice the blinking light but I was anxious to see if we would hear the alarm later to know how long the battery actually lasts. I came back to the den, picked up my tablet and continued searches an worked on line as normal. About two hours later, I noticed we were off line. I never heard the warning alarm. Of course it was inside the cabinet in another room and the air conditioning was running noisily. That was a little disappointing, but typically we know if the power goes out and I generally go to the office and shut down the computer. We know the APC does its job and when we get the next storm that kicks off the power our equipment will be protected from a surge, and as long as we are awake there’s time to finish any computer work, make notifications to the power company and shut down the computer safely. That is what we need. APC makes a great product and this one seems to be the quality we expect. Only time and storms will tell for sure. I would recommend this if you want that peace of mind to protect expensive equipment.

    Nice battery backup design

I have had many battery backup devices and have had varying results over the years,,, usually short battery life or problems with alarms that just don't seem to work right. I have had great success with APC products and this one is no different. It has a new, sleek design that doesn't look so much like a battery backup and more like some kind of overgrown surge strip. We live in an area that has had frequent power outages, both from weather and repairs to the local equipment. This came just in time to save us from the last couple of them. It has done well and the alarm silence works well. I am impressed by the time it runs without power for such a small package. The hookup for the battery when first starting up is very simple, just plug in the small cable in the bottom to complete the circuit for the battery and then plug in the power cord. After a day, the battery is supposed to be fully charged and ready to go. With nine outlets, there are plenty of places to plug devices in and the USB port allows a device to be charged without taking up one of the outlets. We have our laptops, cell phones and smart watches plugged in so we don't have to worry about them being dead when we have one of these nice public safety power outages! Nice device with great features! Looking forward to seeing how it stands up to long-term use.

    Excellent medium duty UPS

This is a pretty solid unit for medium duty usage. There are 9 total plugs on this UPS unit. 3 of them are surge protection only; the other 6 are battery + surge protection. There is also a 2.1 amp USB plug on the unit as well which is great for charging my iPhone/iPad. The description says the UPS has almost a 6 hour battery life which is pretty decent. I haven't tested that part yet so I'm hoping that's true. I think 6 hours is plenty of time for backup power. Biggest problem for me is having to rearrange my devices into the UPS. Will definitely plug my modem, VOIP and powered USB hub. I have tons of other electronic devices so it'll really boil down to identifying the 6-9 devices i need plugged into this thing. This UPS seems like a pretty solid unit for most uses. I'd imagine if you have LOTS of devices that require more power or whatever, you might want to get a larger unit. I'd say for most uses, maybe 75-80% of all users, this UPS should suit them just fine.

    Expensive “ Long Term” replacement

No longer has a replaceable battery. Prior home and small office units had replaceable batteries which resulted in long service life and low average lifetime cost. This new model line is a throw away, which requires expensive replacement at high cost.

Power and Stability for Your Devices

I should disclose up front that I received the APC Back-UPS 900VA for purposes of review. But, I have been a fan of APC and their consumer line of uninterruptible power supplies for over twenty years. The APC - Back-UPS 900VA is another stable power back-up from APC. The Back-UPS 900VA is a standby power back-up. Most of the time, your devices will operate from the wall current. If there is a power disruption, the UPS will take over. The amount of time between the switch is insignificant for most electronic devices and can ensure your internet stays operational or that you have just a few more minutes to save and shut down your PC. And in my experience, these back-ups are essential. Nothing more frustrating that a freak power outage as you are working on a project. For many years, brown outs and surges were frying my computer’s components. Using a UPS with my desktop PC saved me from costly repairs and lost productivity. This model is a bit slimmer and takes up less space than the APCs of a few years ago. There are voltage sensitivity adjustments and a quick mute for the power outage alarm. Older APC models had the ability to hook up to a computer’s USB port so that the computer would know when it was on a battery and could save and shut down even without a user present. That port has sadly disappeared from recent entries and this model of the 900VA is no different. If that feature is important to you, you may need to look at a different model. APC produces various power back-ups such as the 450VA and 650VA models. In general, the higher the number, the longer your back-up will operate in the event of a power outage. In my experience, the 450VA was fine if I was just wanting a few minutes to shut down a computer. But the 650VA and the 900VA will give you more time with your devices. This model has a built-in 2.1A USB port. The port could be useful to charge your phone in a power outage. However, in my experience, the port does not support rapid charge for Samsung and Google devices. I recommend APC. APC’s back-ups have helped me out for years. I recommend this power back-up.
