  • Black Screen Caused by Overcharging

    This iPad was used infrequently since purchased in December 2019. Went to use it after charging (hadn't been charged for about a month), and could not get it to turn on. The iPad had a black screen, through attempts at resets (depressing Home and Power buttons and trying to connect to iTunes, which did not recognize it). The back was warm in the area of the motherboard. The Geek Squad told us that, if we were to send it for repair to Apple, we would get a replacement iPad as their "fix." However, it was out of warranty (so we would have to pay for this "fix"/replacement) and we had needed data on it that was not backed up. We took the iPad to a wireless repair shop, who stated that the iPad was in need of micro soldering but that they could not help with this. We were then referred to another repair shop (Hey iRepair in Norwich, CT) who provided a very knowledgeable and saving repair to the iPad to get it back to working condition. The repair shop determined that the iPad had burned out capacitors and a TriStar chip due to sending too much current into the iPad. We had used an Apple cord and charger for the iPad but it seems that the iPad did not prevent its own overcharging. We were told that, after the first capacitor burned out, and charging continued, the other capacitor and chip also burned out. At least the shop was able to replace the affected parts and give us a working iPad, especially since we needed the data and we already had an Apple pencil for this seventh generation iPad that is not compatible with the newer iPad models. Highly recommend contacting Hey iRepair if you find yourself in a similar position with an iPad.

    It's a nice ipad for my daily activity. I only needed a basic one to carry around do very mundane tasks for which my laptop is too bulky. So far I have not had any regrets.
