Customers are saying

Customers admire the 12.9-Inch iPad Pro's large screen size, ease of use, and impressive camera quality. Many appreciate its performance and lightweight design, although some find the price to be high. A few users noted the absence of a home button and headphone jack as drawbacks. Concerns were also raised regarding the available storage capacity.

    University Student’s 1-Year Review

This is a (kind of) comprehensive student’s perspective on using the iPad Pro daily for 1 year so far. I have the 12.9” 2018 model, but really the only major difference is that the 2020 model has a nicer camera for the same price. I use my iPad every day. I will confidently say that this machine has changed me life. I look for every little excuse to use it whenever I can. I read all my textbooks on it, draw with procreate almost daily, write papers and short stories on it, watch youtube, and anything else I can do. There are some issues I’ve faced that I should share, though. Note-taking with the Apple Pencil: After a year’s experience, I must admit that there’s nothing as good as writing graphite notes on real paper. I spent one semester writing in my iPad, and the next on paper, and I struggled much more to retain information during my semester on the iPad. It’s like using a pencil just *clicks* the info into my brain. I’m trying again this semester to write all my notes on my iPad (I’ll be using Notability), because digital note-taking was one of the things that enticed me about this machine, but so far I’ve been disappointed by it. It feels like writing on glass, and like the words I’m writing don’t exist after I rub them into the smooth surface (honestly, they don’t—they’re just lines of invisible code and not real, tactile graphite). Other school stuff: The canvas app doesn’t let me finish all of my homework assignments on my iPad. Some programs require software I can only run on my mac (i can’t recall the specific types), so I’ve never been able to replace my mac. Proctorio also doesn’t work on an iPad, which means I can only use my mac for taking exams. And finally, I don’t like using Zoom on my iPad, because it looks at me from a weird, sideways angle. Writing an essay on Pages is alright with the iPad’s onscreen keyboard, especially on the 12.9” which is the same size as the keyboard on my 13” mac. However, the Word app for iPad sucks, and google docs kinda does too. The onscreen keyboard takes so much space, and those apps leave you with so little typing room left that I can barely see more than 4 lines at once. The Pages app and it’s integration in iCloud file management seems to have a somewhat better layout on an iPad, since obviously Apple designed it for their own iPad, and it’s especially convenient to be able to convert a Pages file into a Word doc and then submit it to Canvas all from the Pages app), but as a word processor it seems like the dumbest and simplest of the main three. It definitely has a learning curve, at least. If you plan to use the iPad more as typing computer than an art or handwriting device, I for sure recommend getting a bluetooth keyboard, keyboard folio, or the Magic Keyboard case (the latter being the best option but also most ridiculously priced). I’m currently waiting to see if they make an updated, better magic keyboard this spring before I buy one or not. I mean, $350 is the price of like a PC laptop, and I’d be spending it on a keyboard?? The current model isn’t worth the money, at least for an artist and scribbler like me. Finally, this is minor but on my mind as of this week: the native Mail app for iPad and iPhone doesn’t show all of the PDFs you might receive in an email. I didn’t realize my professor sent me a PDF assignment until I opened it on gmail.com on my mac. As it turns out, Gmail’s app works fine on this issue. Digital Art: I have only found joy and excitement when making art with Procreate on my iPad (except for when I accidentally draw something huge on the wrong layer and have to redo it :0). I feel like I am able to create anything I can dream of now (although, I will say I miss the feeling of making physical art. It has its own charm). If you love digital art or want to get into it, and can comfortably afford the $1200 it can take to get into the iPad Pro’s art scene, you’ll be greatly rewarded. The 120hz refresh rate makes using this thing so gorgeous that sometimes I’ll just swipe between apps when I’m bored and marvel at how smooth it is. iPad Air vs. Pro To reiterate, I don’t think it’s worth it to break your bank for an iPad Pro if you can’t comfortably afford one—even for art. If you’ll find yourself in financial discomfort shelling out $1200 for it (because honestly a macbook is a much better $1200 machine aside from the art and note taking part, and as Uni students we don’t really have a salary to splurge with yet), I think the iPad Air would make a perfectly fine substitution. Really, the only difference I’ve found art-wise between the iPad Pro and the Air is that the pro is faster and it’s screen is sealed tighter to the internals (or whatever fancy tech name that’s called), so the pencil looks exactly like it’s marking on the screen. With the Air, there’s a bit of an air gap between the pencil and the screen, and it’s slower so you can see slight lag between input and output. Honestly though, the quality is like the difference between a North Face jacket and a Louis Vuitton jacket: the North Face is great and reasonably priced, while the Louis Vuitton is maybe 10% better, but twice as much money—definitely more of a luxury item. iPad Air and Pro are both made by Apple after all, so they’re both top quality machines. Basically, unless you’re an actual PROfessional, the iPad Pro is overkill. I and almost all of my friends who have bought Pro’s for school have experienced buyer’s remorse over the price. In the end though, I do love the luxury of it, and it’s my favorite gadget. 11” vs. 12.9” I almost sold my 12.9 to get an 11”. I have giant slenderman hands, and I still struggle to hold my 12.9 comfortably in one hand. I can do it, but watch me suffer as I do. The 11” is definitely more portable. However, the 12.9 fits fine in a standard backpack, is much better for typing and multi-tasking on (because it’s about the same size as a macbook screen), and it’s the same size as a sheet of paper so it’s amazing for drawing. I’ve tried to do these things on friends’ 11 inch ipads, and I always felt claustrophobic. My friend with an 11in IPP said she coveted my 12.9in when I said I wanted an 11in, so I guess the grass is always greener. Both sizes are good, but I recommend 12.9inches for both aesthetic and utilitarian reasons. Durability I am paranoid about breaking my iPad. These things literally bend like nothing; there are videos of guys bending them in half with their bare hands, and they don’t even struggle to do it. I use mine naked whenever I’m at home, but I always keep it in a smart folio case when it’s in my backpack or at school. I used to also protect it in its own padded tablet sleeve I bought on Amazon, but that felt so clunky that I finally opted to keep it in my backpack’s laptop sleeve with just the folio case. Nevertheless, treat this thing with care. Never sit on or lean against your backpack with the iPad in it, and don’t drop it, as this WILL bend or shatter it. The fragility is definitely the scammiest part of this $1200 machine. I didn’t buy Apple Care, and I regret it. Buy Apple Care: it is your only hope if you break it. With that fear mongering out of the way though, normal and cautious use shouldn’t harm it. Aside from a few scrapes on my $10 tempered glass screen protector, my iPad is unscathed after a year. Knock on wood. Oh, and my Apple Pencil hasn’t broken or gotten lost yet, though I did forget it at a one-night-stand’s house, which made it awkward to retrieve (almost bought a new one just to avoid going back). It’s tip hasn’t worn down from the glass. It has definitely scratched my screen protector though with small pieces of dust or rock. If i haven’t said it enough already, USE A SCREEN PROTECTOR. Anyways, I hope these helped; they’re everything I wish I would’ve known before I bought my iPad, since most reviews are only after the first week to month of use.
