Do you really need an iPad?

First off, I'd like to point out that I tend to love Apple products, but that I have never had much love for the iPads. They just never fulfilled a particular need that I had at all. I returned my iPad 2, iPad Air, and iPad Pro 12", and I have generally stuck to my MacBook Pro for photo and video editing and other major work, and an iPhone for everything else. In fact, I loved my iPhone 6S Plus! It was almost everything I needed and fit in my pocket! And until now, I thought I would want nothing more. Alas, Apple goes and does what they always do: release another shiny, new product. And then I start drooling. However, I have learned from the past, and asked myself if I could reasonably afford an iPhone AND an iPad. I couldn't find anything that I would want to do on the iPhone that I couldn't do on an iPad. In fact, everything that I used my iPhone for (calling, texting, web browsing, news, Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, Netflix (thank you to T-Mobile for Binge On!), Camera and Photos, music, Waze, Google Maps, Notes, FaceTime, MS Word, banking, and misc. time-killer games) is actually easier for me on an iPad, believe it or not. I can type faster and see much better with the larger 9.7" screen, but I also have the benefit of having access to both iPad and iPhone apps, vs just iPhone. So I went in to a local Best Buy (after calling a million nearby stores, nobody seemed to have the exact model I wanted... popular model apparently and I wasn't willing to wait!) and traded my iPhone 6S Plus for an iPad Pro 128GB Wifi+Cellular in Space Grey, and paid the remaining difference. Once I pulled the trigger, I popped my T-Mobile SIM card in, cancelled my phone line and added a data-only line. I make calls and texts through Google Hangouts for free, or I also use iMessage and FaceTime (I love the way everything syncs to my Macintosh through the apps and I can go to gmail.com and make calls and texts from my browser). Apple Music, Pandora, YouTube and Netflix stream free (I went through 44GB of data in a month using those services alone) and everything else is just as well as if I had an iPhone - just bigger. Granted, I cannot put it in my pocket. This was intentional. I found myself nearly always on my phone in some capacity or another, especially when I'm in social situations. This makes me lose situational awareness and disconnects me from the rest of the world. Once I started noticing this behavior, I started to wonder if I needed this constant connection to the Internet, or if I was missing out. Now, I carry it around with me (which isn't at all bad, especially when grocery shopping and using Reminders/Notes) or shove it in my backpack when I'm on my motorcycle. In the car, it keeps me from texting and driving, and with the tablet car mount off of Amazon for $25, I can control music and Maps in the car. Paired with a $9 case just to protect from scratches, I love this setup. I also happen to love being able to edit movies through iMovie, which I don't do very often, but it's nice to be able to manipulate videos on this size screen. Much more convenient than my iPhone was. The four speakers are absolutely phenomenal: loud, crisp and they sound as though they're surrounding you. I would rather watch Netflix on this than my MacBook Pro Retina (and the Mac is no slouch!), it just blows the iPhone out of the water (of course). And the screen is absolute magic: sharp, true to life color, sensitive. Touch ID is always great, very quick, and I love that apps are starting to integrate it now, such as the Capital One app. It's very thin and light overall, and with a CPU, GPU and front & back cameras that are on par with the top of the line iOS devices that Apple has to offer, you're missing out on absolutely nothing. In fact, the cellular chip within this device is actually faster than the one in iPad Pro 12", and has more cellular bands, not to mention the more advanced camera. All in all, I love my iPad. I use it for 95% of everything I need a device for - Photoshop is one of the only things I cannot beat on my Macintosh. And for me, it’s been a great replacement for my iPhone. Especially since I pay significantly less monthly for my data plan through T-Mobile to do the same thing, and don’t need a device in my pocket every moment I’m out of the house. Is replacing your phone with a tablet going to everyone’s preference? Absolutely not. But it works for me, and I have absolutely no regrets with my wonderful iPad.

I purchased the 9.7 iPad Pro w/WiFi & Cellular to replace my 1st generation iPad and am totally blown away with its performance. It is a great size, lightweight and has the best resolution/display, camera, sound. Am so glad I opted for the cellular feature as it allows me to answer phone calls and text messages. It is the most used item in my household especially when my grandchildren are visiting.

    Simply Awesome

Having owned several iPad models within the past few years, including the 12" iPad Pro, I would say that the 9.7" iPad Pro is the best iPad ever made - it's nearly perfect. It's the ideal size for reading, productivity, and gaming, it's compact and portable for taking anywhere, weighs almost nothing, has an awesome screen, and Apple finally supports stylus input (yes, I said stylus) and the ability to use a keyboard without having to connect it via bluetooth. Is it a "Pro" device? ...I don't know; but, apps seem to be getting better and the iPad Pro seems to be leading the way in what mobile apps should become. Many apps are quickly adapting to take advantage of Apple's new keyboard and Pencil accessories. There's a lot that could be accomplished with the iPad Pro; however, lots of tasks, like web development still require a computer with regular OS. With that said, there are apps that would allow one to remote into their computer a home/work from pretty much anywhere, and the 9.7" iPad Pro is a good size tablet to allow for that (the 12" was awesome for remoting into a computer - I just hated how big and heavy it was). Anyways, this tablet is awesome - and if you go with the 4G/LTE model it makes it more of "Pro" device.

I have been waiting to upgrade from my iPad2 but the original IPad Pro was too large. I can't believe how much lighter and faster it is - and the screen is unbelievable. The sound quality can't be beat. I've already watched more videos on it than my old iPad2. Well worth the wait and investment.

Major Upgrade from 4th Generation Model

Purchase made as an upgrade to the 4th Generation iPad. This time, went with Wi-Fi + Cellular. Blazing fast speeds at all tasks. Good (not great) battery life with cellular enabled. Turn off cellular mode when not needed to get great battery life. Smaller form factor then previous model; but still feels good in the hands. Makes the 4th Generation iPad feel like a brick (it's that light). Better multi-tasking abilities than with previous generations.

This is my third iPad and the improvement is amazing. The speed is very good and the display is outstanding. This battery life is notably longer that my previous iPads. It is very light and and not much thicker than a sheet of glass.

I have loved my iPad 4th Gen since I bought it years ago. When the iPad Pro (Normal Size) was released I wondered what would make me upgrade. It turns out that I am a sucker for Better Resolution, Fast Response, Lighter Weight and 2 Better Cameras. You know, a fool and his money. But all that seemed tame when I found that I could work with two apps on the screen at the same time. The interface for that is very useful. So, thanks, Apple. And thanks, Best Buy.

Full disclosure: I'm a Windows guy. I also own a Surface Pro 3 that I love. I bought the iPad Pro because I wanted to learn more about the Apple ecosystem and what it has to offer. That's where Windows can't come close to competing. I love the size, weight and build quality of the iPad. It's fast and runs smoothly. I'm glad I bought it.

Bought to replace second generation iPad, which was becoming frustratingly slow at browsing and some of the more complicated apps. Speed of the pro model is refreshing. Fingerprint entry is also a nice convenience. Higher resolution is occasionally worthwhile. Lower weight is also an important improvement. Haven't yet used the slow motion video, but am looking forward to that for sports. Best Buy purchase went off without a hitch, and delivery was days faster than promised.

Got the iPad Pro 9.7 inch at such a great price I cannot complain much, it’s size make it very portable and it is very light weight. I picked up the version with cellular service so I have connection wherever I go that doesn’t offer WiFi service, I am a Samsung phone (android) user but I have always liked iPads this one has so many features it’s almost like carrying around a laptop with all the features it has to offer I also decided to pick up the Apple Pencil to go along with it. My only issue is after using my buddies iPad Pro 12 inch version I noticed how much more useful and comfortable the Apple Pencil is on that one for drawing. Overall I like this iPad and would recommend it.

Love the new features and it really light. The size is great as I was needing a slightly larger ipad (than the mini) but not the larger size. My customers think it is great and it has traveled well and fits in several sleeves/covers I already had.
