Internal damage
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I hired a computer technician to install it for me. During installation, there was a message "internal damage needs repair". When I looked online about it, a lot of people had a similar problem especially after it's been working fine. I didn't want to deal with the problem, so I decided to return the product. Best Buy was nice and accepted the return.

Not Just For Fan Boys!!!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had the first gen Time Capsule, long before I had any Apple products. I made the switch then, because they were one of the first ones to successfully implement remote storage. For seven years, the old unit worked flawlessly, but as our Internet and storage demands grew, it struggled to keep up. I payed almost $300 for the original unit back in 07, which hurt bad, but can't complain about 7 years of good service. Prior to buying the unit, I was going through routers once every 1 1/2 to 2 years. They would somehow all die sudden deaths. With the non Apple units, I seemed to always be chasing down disconnects, random reboots, incompatibilities, etc., so after three units and three different brands and eventually trying unsuccessfully to add remote storage to my network, I was more than happy to try a Time Capsule. That was then....fast forward to today and I was once again in the market for a stable, reliable router with solid storage capabilities. By this time, we had added a few other Apple products to our electronics, but I still need strong Android and Windows compatibilities. I really wanted to go an alternate route this time, so I could have a bit more control over storage, so I looked at every offering out there and Synology seemed to be the only storage unit with rock solid reviews and compatibilities across the various platforms I use. The biggest problem I ran into was the inability to find a router that didn't have a slew of the old issues I used to deal with pre-07! Many had great reviews, but the negatives were all too familiar. Besides, the Synology storage solution was going to be a hefty hit to the finances...I'll still do it at some point. I read review after review about how the Time Capsule is limited in its configuration and for dummy Fan Boys only and how pricy it is, etc., etc. As a techie, I dig configuration options, but I try to balance that with how much tech support I feel I can stomach, after I've spent the whole day at work doing it.....not much. I also read many reviews about incompatibilities with older Windows systems, so I was a bit leery, but nothing else was floating to the top. Many have posted the price being too high, but in my research, all AC capable routers are in the sub $200 range, which puts them on par with the Airport Extreme. So, for roughly another $100, I was adding 2T of internal storage, which is as good a price as I can get on the drive alone! I just don't see what the complaints are regarding price. You can't get the same set up for less across any brand. At least, not as of this writing. Now, for the setup. If you already have a functioning router, you will be asked to provide the SSID and password for the old unit and Voila, everything gets transferred right to the new Time Capsule. It took me all of 5 minutes, including opening the package, making the connections and waiting for it to boot. It's a bummer the unit doesn't have a USB 3.0 port, but the internal drive is super fast. I timed copying a large movie file to the drive via a wireless N connection and the same move took twice as long to copy to a USB 2.0 drive connected directly to my computer. this limitation isn't going to a huge bummer, as most any remote storage I add will use an Ethernet connection. I've since connected several Windows 7 and 8.1 systems to it flawlessly, so not sure what others are complaining about with regards to older Windows systems. XP is almost dead, so if that was the complaint, it will soon be a non-issue. Can't wait to try in wireless AC, but so far the Wireless N side has been flawless and fast. No bottlenecks whatsoever with 10 simultaneous connections. Wow, something that actually works as advertised! What a concept. :-)

Works great as long as you don't have Comcast.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Got this in excitement for my MacBooks and I mac and iOS devices... got home set it up on my Comcast router and within ten minutes my entire network went down. Spent hours on the phone with Comcast with no luck. They sent out techs who spent another two hours working on it and found out it's not compatible with Comcast routers....

Easily set up
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This was very easy to set up but I'm not sure I've done it correctly. It is supposed to be super fast and provide a stronger wireless connection than the standard router. So far, this is NOT the case. I have yet to contact Apple but plan to do so. I've had to reset it on numerous occassions and have not even attempted yet to store anything on the 2tb available.

A bit of a letdown
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was expecting great things, instead I was so disappointed I returned it. The issue I had was the network performance (both Wi-Fi and wired) would drop significantly going through this unit. I have 25GB/s internet service, and if a ran a speed test on my PS3 connected directly to the modem it was always around 20GB/s. As soon as I introduced the airport to the system, it went to 18Gb/s which doesn't sound too bad at first, but after an hour or so this dropped to less than 2GB/s and you have to unplug and restart the unit to get it to be back up to 18GB/s. Clearly this is not acceptable. I looked online through the apple discussion forums and it seems that a lot of people are having similar issues. I'm not a beta tester. If I pay over $300 for an item I expect it to work. I decided to forego the storage feature of the item and return it for a Motorola surfboard combined router and modem. Now my system and network performance are flawless.

Not what you think
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The first one I bought was defective. Apple tech support helped set up the second one, and then told me it's not designed to be used as a wireless external hard drive. I appreciate their honesty in telling me to just take the Time Capsule back, but it's a bummer that even though it technically can be used as a wireless external hard drive, you really shouldn't since files will get corrupted. I don't fully understand the reasoning for this but the tech support guy from Apple said it's "not that kind of hard drive" and is seriously only good for Time Machine backups. ...I was able to return the second one and bought a basic Wifi Router and will just continue to be tethered by cords from external hard drives.

Excellent Range & Speed
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. After years of using the original Apple Time Capsule 500GB I finally upgraded to the 2TB Time Capsule. I've never had a single problem with my old Time Capsule over the years (maybe I got lucky as I've read users have had pretty bad experiences with them). I first needed to upgrade my cable modem to meet the new speeds of my ISP. Now that my router has been upgraded, my wi-fi speeds have tripled! The Time Machine backups are SO much faster I'm really impressed. Set up was a BREEZE! I didn't even have to re-enter my existing network info or change my extended network settings (I have a NetGear network extender in another part of my house to boost the signal). All I needed to do was give my Time Capsule a name and continue. Set-up was all of 5 minutes. Now I don't even need the network extender because the range actually penetrates my walls! Our house was built in the 60's and some of the walls are brick so I'm very impressed that the signal penetrates brick and cinder block. We have close neighbors so I didn't enable the "guest network" (it comes disabled out of the box). Netflix, my Roku, Apple TV and my smart TV's stream faster. I was in the middle of uploading 9000 photos to Apple's iCloud when I got the new Time Capsule. It had taken 3 days to upload 2000 photos & videos. After installing my new Time Capsule the upload finished uploading the remaining 7000 that same night. Awesome! I have a 3TB Seagate disk attached and accessing it over my faster network has been so much faster and no more frustration waiting for the connection. I couldn't be happier. Pricey, yes, but overall I'm very satisfied.

Excellent Addition to my MacBook Air
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I wanted a simple effective way to backup the data on my Apple MacBook Air. I read all of the reviews on this Airport Time Capsule and decided to give it a try. If I didn't like it or it didn't work for me I could always take it back to Best Buy within 15 days for a full refund. I am very pleased to say that this was a excellent purchase. The setup time took about 45 seconds and 15 seconds of that was an error that I made by placing the LAN cable in the wrong spot on the back of the unit. After answer a few questions it quickly found my network and the Amber light turned Green indicating that I was done and ready for use. I did the first backup and it took about 45 min. Only 45 GB used on my MacBook so it didn't take to long at all. I've always had a few dead spots on my WiFi in my home so I tested those spots out and immediately noticed a significant improvement in signal strength. Based on all of my tests and hands on I can't see any reason why I can't give this item a 5 Star rating in all categories. I caught it on sale at Best Buy for $278.00. What a DEAL !!!
